Deserved victory for India, a valiant chase by the English... 322 will win you 95% of 50 over games... just didn’t reign in the Indian batsmen with the ball...

Something though from Kohli that bugs the fûck out of me though and is a contributing factor to my thorough dislike of him as a sportsperson... English batsmen were motoring well, he decides to gather about 5 of his teammates around him, a supposed argument ensues between them, lots of animated angry faces, dramatic gesturing... pointing at parts of the outfield, eyes and arms and false teeth thrown up to the heavens, like something out of the abbey, this goes on for about 4 minutes... umpires stood in their positions, batsmen can only stand, chat and fiddle with their helmets, fück all said to Kohli or teammates by the umpires, the opposing batsmen as well as those of us eagerly awaiting the climax of an exciting and quality cricket game are in WTF mode....

Kohli is a sportsperson, but not a sporting person

T20 and ODIs are so hard to watch with the amount of time it takes to compete. It's genuinely slower than test cricket now. Morgan is a very fiddly captain and Kohli plus the brains trust are very hands on. They really need to start clamping down on the over rates in white ball.

Now we have the IPL to look forward to, with their 4 hour games.

For a 50 over game, the bowling team have 3.5 hours to bowl all 50, the minimum over rate is 14.28 per hour..

41.9 Time wasting by the fielding side

41.9.1 It is unfair for any fielder to waste time.

41.9.2 If either umpire considers that the progress of an over is unnecessarily slow, or time is being wasted in any other way, by the captain of the fielding side or by any other fielder, at the first instance the umpire concerned shall

    - if the ball is in play, call and signal Dead ball.

    - inform the other umpire of what has occurred.

The bowler’s end umpire shall then

    - warn the captain of the fielding side, indicating that this is a first and final warning.

    - inform the batsmen of what has occurred.

41.9.3 If either umpire considers that there is any further waste of time in that innings by any fielder, the umpire concerned shall

    - if the ball is in play, call and signal Dead ball.

    - inform the other umpire of what has occurred.

The bowler’s end umpire shall then

either, if the waste of time is not during an over, award 5 Penalty runs to the batting side and inform the captain of the fielding side of the reason for this action

or, if the waste of time is during the course of an over, direct the captain of the fielding side to suspend the bowler immediately from bowling.

The bowler thus suspended shall not be allowed to bowl again in that innings.

If applicable, the over shall be completed by another bowler, who shall neither have bowled any part of the previous over, nor be allowed to bowl any part of the next over.

Additionally the umpire shall inform the batsmen and, as soon as is practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred.

The umpires together shall report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the offending side and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain, any other individuals concerned and, if appropriate, the team.

Both umpires watching what transpired and staring into space... needed to find the stones to award runs against India and that joker Kohli.

Today was a long day. 9am until after 6 pm. Test cricket you just lose the overs not bowled even with the extra half hour. Maybe that's why that can feel not as slow. Hefty run penalties is the best solution.

Very enjoyable game still. If Curran couldn't win the game I wanted him to get his hundred. Special effort coming in at number 8. That's why they persist with him.

Hefty run penalties is the way to go to punish slow over rates and messing and skullduggery like we saw there, an actual deterrent... for every ball short, penalize the offenders 1 run... an over and a half short, you loose 9 runs... after those 9 balls you loose 2 runs per ball short... so two overs short, you loose 15 runs.

If you as a bowling team are struggling, tough, bowl three fast overs of spin one after another... get the rate back... your responsibility.

Umpires really need to get the finger out... you wouldn’t have seen the likes of Billy Bowden put up with that shït from Kohli, imagine Dickie Bird with that craic going on :o the crooked finger would be the least of your worries..

Kohli is a pretty dislikable cricketer, no denying that, but the standards of umpiring needs to go up a level...two ginnets standing there while cricket lovers want a fair, well managed and entertaining contest... one side prevents that ? Umpires need to get their fingers out. Unacceptable.

Kraigg Braithwaite is 99* and Rahkeem Cornwall 43* at the close of day one of the second test in Antigua, West Indies reached 287/7 off 86 overs against Sri Lanka, these two have batted well, and advanced the score from 222/7

Could be spot fixing, but Natarajan bowled a lot of no balls in the Australia series, and the tamil nadu region has a bad reputation in their T20 Premier league, not the whole team, but in the home of match fixing, it's not a wild allegation, watching today some suspicious things happened, so although it is difficult to make allegations, I might just leave it at looked suspicious. There is a certain level of form there though.

This stuff is nonsense imo. These lads are loaded and the riches on offer for them in their careers nowadays makes it even more unfathomable they would get involved.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Gillespy

On the time wasting issue the IPL have announced it's now 90 minutes per innings. Before it was you had to start the 20th over inside 90 minutes. That also includes the time outs. Very ambitious based on any IPL game I've ever watched. Article I read didn't mention anything about the punishment for not meeting it.

Also in the IPL, Pant is named captain of DC after Iyer's injury. Steve Smith overlooked which is no harm.

Natarajan is the complete opposite, he's from a piss poor region in tamil nadu, and is only a recent addition to the Indian national team, Mohammed Amir was targeted by match fixers because he was from a very poor background, and it is possible to be corrupted. Just because most of the Indian team are from privileged backgrounds, doesn't mean the culture is not there. Richie Benaud, gave the MCC spirit of cricket lecture a few years ago and said that what annoys him the most about match fixers is that while he spent most of his life trying to figure out how to win cricket matches, there are people who spend most of their life trying to figure out how to lose them. It is a problem that has been swept under the carpet, but hasn't gone away. Sharjeel Khan was done for it, a couple of months after scoring 150 very quickly against Ireland in malahide, and is now back training with the Pakistani T20 side, and two UAE cricketers got 8 year bans last week. They would be fairly wealthy as well, as would the poster boy for match fixing, the late Hansie Cronje. I hope it's not the case, but some of that match looked hugely suspicious. You could have a team 200/8, and get a decent price on them reaching 250, so you don't have to lose the game to win a fix.

    New Zealand 152/3

Run rate is only 2.73... seriously conservative by modern test match standards, especially considering their innings is 55 overs in.

Not many chances, NZ batsmen have been watchful...English bowlers accurate but not too much pressure on the NZ lads.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,929 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Stumps, a tough and tedious watch. Not many runs and not many wickets...246 runs scored by New Zealand for the loss of 3 wickets from 86 overs... a run rate of just 2.86...if they go on to win the test NZ won’t care but that is pathetic. Given conditions you’d like minimum in this day and age 290/300 plus at the end of a days play on a road of a pitch that gave the bowlers nothing.

New Zealand will obviously be the far happier outfit... posting 400 plus and getting through to about tea to declare will be the aim tomorrow..

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Gillespy

What a batsman Conway is. Latham with a quality opening partner will make them an even stronger team. Well on top now. They bat deep and while England fought hard, they will tire tomorrow eventually and runs will flow quickly then.

Pitch looks fine so no excuse for England not to match whatever NZ get first innings. Hard to judge England bowling today, effort was there and decent control. Wood is really fast and wholehearted but never gets many wickets in England. Stone would have been a better pick, did well any time he played. Root as the main spinner is another one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,929 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Looking back, England will be very disappointed. They had NZ 114/3. That’s nice pressure, that’s commanding... 190/5 would have to have been a hopeful minimum and maybe into the tail by stumps. But 114/3 becomes 246/3...at stumps, A 132 run partnership and counting...

the first session should be interesting in particular tomorrow ...320/4 or 320/5 at lunch and 400 is very getable and the game getting away from England....

The day is set very fair, little chance of rain and a high of 27 degrees. Pitch is a bit of a pancake, bounce is consistent so the bowlers will need to work for their wickets..

Looking forward to watching Jamieson bowl outside New Zealand. Must be the most intimidating bowler going. Bounce and fast enough. His stats so far are unreal. Can't discount Wagner either. Boult is a loss though especially with the Duke ball.

314-for 7, a quick slew of wickets there!

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,734 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

    And another one 317-8

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Should be 9 down, Southee dropped by Broad. Shows the importance of keeping the runs under control yesterday. That graphic showing the variation in bounce will be welcomed viewing for Jamieson and Wagner.

Dreadful batting by NZ today. Always amazes me how one player can get a huge score and the rest bat as if they're playing on a mine field.

At least Wagner is doing his best to entertain us.

Amusing to see two South Africans batting for New Zealand!

Goes to 200 with a six on debut. That's the way to announce your arrival.

International Cricket is very fluid when it comes to nationality it seems to me...

Jamieson strikes early - this could be fun!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Two umpire's calls is very unlucky for Sibley.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,159 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Poor shot from Crawley and New Zealand all over England here. England's batting line-up looking very feeble at the moment.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,734 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

England 18-2 already, not a great start, this could be very one sided if it continues, need a big innings from someone at the crease!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Gillespy

In pure ball hitting talent, Crawley is way a head of the likes of Burns and Sibley. They couldn't do what he did against Pakistan. He needs some more of their discipline though. That shot today was awful and it's not the only ugly dismissal he's had starting an innings.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,734 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

106-2, they seem to have stabilised after that terrible start!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Gillespy

They've done well. Wagner no threat at all until his very last over. Burns very comfortable against anything short from him. Santner dealt with easily too. Long way behind still. Good watch today overall.
