Does that mean that Canberra and Wellington are the two capital cities furthest away from any other capital city?

    That's it!

The reason I mentioned that they both had the honour because of one another is of course because nothing would stop there being another capital ten miles farther on past Wellington from the Canberra POV or vice versa, so one city could hold the title alone.

In fact I think I remember reading there is some Pacific island nation or other flirting with independence from France that would be closer to (I think) Canberra, leaving Wellington out on its own.

    Interesting article about it here:

Were different versions made for the US and the European markets? I'm thinking of blond, befreckled Dennis with the slingshot for the US, and the black haired boy with Gnasher for the UK, and then Wally/Waldo, for instance.

Or perhaps just stripes (Wally/Waldo is red and white :)):

    Pedant!!

Funnily enough, the source from which I borrowed the question also referred to striped jerseys.

(Among my circle of friends, we see being called a pedant as a badge of honour. It's right up there with being called a curmudgeon.)

Gilbert N. Lewis (1875-1946) was nominated 41 times for, but never won, which Nobel Prize?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,736 ✭✭✭✭looksee

I knew I had no idea so I looked him up. I have still no idea what he did!

I have a suspicion it's chemistry because of his covalent bonds discoveries - but I only know that was a Lewis and have no first name.

Chemistry is correct. I came across it in a newspaper quiz a few days ago and Wikipedia confirms it. I still find it hard to credit.

If it's true he must have spent alot of time messing with the saucepan in the kitchen. Mrs. Lewis can't have been pleased.

Some ants, bees and wasps have a petiole. What is the petiole?

    No takers?

Ok, I'll have it so. It's a stalk-like piece joining the thorax to the abdomen.

The internet and fast look ups. OK we all know that some posters are erudite, but still.

    That's me banned now.

I refer you to my previous post in reply to this one:

Some great answers, but not the one I'm looking for :D

Apologies, I normally go for straight down the line trivia questions and they get gobbled up in 30 seconds so trying something a bit less googleable this time!

Are you insinuating that we resort to google to answer these questions?!? I am shocked and appalled, Sir, shocked and appalled!

(If I did, I'd get more right... :o)

Spanish Eyes, we leave it to people whether they want to google. I reckon most - the vast majority - don't, it takes the fun out of it. Even if, for myself, that means I rarely answer anything. And I do sometimes check before I answer, but I say if I do. Still, there is no drama if people do, move on to the next question. And Srameen can do the nature type questions no problem, his area, so the only surprise is that it took so long for him to answer :D

I regularly google the answer to a question from here, but when I do I won't post the answer because that's just plain lying, and ruining the enjoyment for everyone else. There are times when I think some users (Srameen :P) must be googling the answers because it seems impossible to know the answer unless you do. But then there are times where the answer isn't googleable, and them users (Srameen) come up with the right answer which proves that he is as knowledgeable as he seems.

[ have said a few times over the past that I do not mind if folks do google it is up to them besides we can not stop them. also it is a way to pass on knowledge

and that is what this quiz was designed to do. in a good natured way

I wouldn't be bothered googling an answer. The answer will be given here eventually. There are just things we know or can take an educated stab at or deduce from part of the question. Throw up some GAA or Soccer questions and it would be complete silence from me. Many genres of music are outside my sphere as well.
But if someone want to research or Google for an answer, so be it. It's only a bit of fun.

Could we just put Srameen on a 24 hour stop clock after each question to give the rest of us a chance?! :D:D

Personally I couldn’t be bothered googling answers and posting them. It defeats the purpose in my mind and I find I remember the answers more into the future, when I’m forced to think about it for a few hours before the big reveal.

Anyway - do we have an open question at the moment? :)

What is Barbara Millicent Roberts' claim to fame?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭Rubecula

I am ashamed to say I know the answer to this srameen but I will leave it for a lady to respond lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,736 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Don't think we have an open question at the moment, though Srameen now owes us one.

Here is another one to be going on with:

Alfred Nobel is well known as the inventor of dynamite, but his father was also a handy inventor - what everyday useful thing did Nobel senior invent?

Edit: Sorry Srameen, missed your question and Rubes, didn't refresh the page before posting.
