Due to a High Court ruling this morning, certain drugs are now legal in Ireland. Apparently Ecstasy and Ketamine are among those that are legal due to the loophole. Watch and see how quick the government can pass legislation when it really wants to.

Until 11.30 tonight when the Dail sits to pass the new laws.

The Dáil is sitting late tonight so they can pass emergency legislation to ban the it ASAP.

The can move when they want to.

How does this affect those who were caught with the stuff in the past? Surely they're of the hook now?

Soooo since 1977 people being arrested and jailed for possession of Ecstasy and Ketamine was unconstitutional. Can any legal types clarify?

That would seem to be the case - and also anyone convicted for any of the other 100 drugs including benzos and any of the previous "legal-highs". Also, the new emergency legislation won't become law until midnight tomorrow night, so for today and tomorrow, all these drugs are legal.

There's no effect on already-finalised cases, including where people are already serving terms of imprisonment.

The declaration of incompatibility only applies to live cases.

Handy get out clause for the state. And scant consolation for those who had their freedom taken away over 40 years unconstitutionally.

    Drug laws are a joke.

Pass emergency legislation to ban these legal drugs.

And they wouldn't pass emergency legislation to give us concerts. Concerts that were sold and then cancelled.

They really don't like people having a good time in any shape or form.

As the politicians are making amendments to this act tonight, then it would a simple matter of removing the words, 'cannabis or cannabis resin' and any section that details these herbs from the act.

I would urge my fellow boardsies to send an email to your TD to encourage this effort.

Where you getting all that jazz from?

Once something becomes legal in a country all previous convictions are quashed and prisoners are freed. Just like the movies :)

Amazing how quick the government can move when they want to. If this was a serious issue the cu nts would be nowhere to be found hiding behind their PR people.

You may need to see a vet for that pain.

Govt can draft and pass emergency legislation for this but not for the 100,000+ people languishing on social housing lists etc etc

Problem: knee-jerk legislation found to be unconstitutional.
    Solution: more knee-jerk legislation.

    Hmmm... colour me sceptical.

Yep, they definitelt shouldnt debate or examine important issues, just take whatever the next healy rae type rocks up to the dail with at face value and push it through within a couple of hours of first hearing about its existence.

It's amazing how fast they can push through legislation when they need/want to!!

Some of the responses in this thread are ridiculous, well most of them actually.

If there is a need to pass emerency legislation to stop the sale of these drugs then it should be done as quick as possible, which it is being.

By the sounds of people here most of you would be happy to see every convicted drug dealer in our jails go free.

People are just having a laugh. It's an absurd situation in fairness.

You'll always get a few extremists who think all drugs should be legalized. I wouldn't mind them.

Not that I believe there is many convicted drug dealers, because our justice is soft, but the reason there is so many gangland drug dealing scum is because these things are illegal.
