....... I'd have a Prius any day over most Diesels, they can be got cheap enough 2nd hand and are a great reliable car.

I had a Prius for 3 days as a rental earlier in the month, I wouldn't take one over any mainstream diesel car. Seriously horrible car imo.
My diesel Lancer did seem quite clattery and unrefined on the spin out of the airport but a mile later I was happy to be back with decent power and comparable fuel economy to the Prius.

Oh great. Another "I hate a prius because it's a Prius" comment.

This is ancient news! They taught this to my dad when he was studying engineering.........over 30 years ago.

Just in general, not having a go at anyone. I had to Google "pulse and glide", it makes me irrationally angry that anyone would do sh*t like that. Willing to bet that driving along at constant speed and treating the accelerator with care will get the same or better result. And people who take it out of gear when coasting, argh, if coasting in gear the engine will need less or even no fuel to keep going, while in neutral it needs fuel to tick over. Give me the same car and I can do better mpg wise without that sh*t.

    edit:
    Much as it annoys me:

    And you'd loose your bet...

Prius is different than anything you have driven - and your assumptions are simply incorrect. For instance you don't put it in Neutral, but keep in Drive all the time. It is the car itself that decides to swtich the ICE off.

All systems are operational - like brake assist, power steering. Even aircon...

    I know, hence my edit.
I'd say in a conventional car that would all be rather tricky.

Can be added to the "I hate VAG diesels because they are VAG diesels" threads! :pac:

This sort of donkey craic may contribute to accordion traffic jams... I may have upset some eco nuts and/or gombeens in the past by pointing this out. Oops!

Just imagine eco nuts reading this thread. Secretly frothing at the mouth at the normal drivers out there. The mockery being made of their sense of self satisfaction. And with no cojones to say anything about it, because its all bollox if you ask me!

More batteries for rc cars and toys for now, not daily transportation ;)

Still doesn't stop the fact that on the motorway you're going to 130 km/h and then lifting to get back down to 110 km/h and then back to 130 km/h.

On a motorway you will not be able to do 120 km/h in the left lane. The middle lane will also be hit and miss with people changing lane constantly.

So in order to properly achieve pulse and gliding at an average speed of 120 km/h you would need to sit in the overtaking lane doing 110-130 km/h.

It's stupid and should be illegal. The savings you make will be lost in the extra wear you put on the engine making it accelerate every so often.

Again - P&G with prius works up to 69kmh... Please, stop talking about things you have no idea about...

So if you lift the throttle at 70 km/h the Prius won't slow down? :D

Well, EV nuts hate diesel drivers, petrol drivers hate both of the above, diesel drivers don't really care about either, everyone hates cyclists and cyclists hate everyone. Did I forget anyone? :D

I formed my opinion after driving the thing for 3 days, I didn't like it, at all.
I'm used to a 150bhp diesel in a light ish small family car that handles ok, the Prius was slow with a really horrible interior, I didn't like the feel of the brakes nor did I like the auto box, CVT type boxes are not for everyone, I hated it.

Before I ever drove it I did think they looked like a serious POS admittedly.

In fairness it takes a longer while to get used to it and start appreciating it...

No you don't get it at all.

The whole thing about Pulse and glide is that it works best at certain speeds.

The important thing people aren't getting is that there are many conditions where pulse and glide can be utilised to it's full potential. It doesn't mean you have to drive at slow speeds.

It just suits some people to think that pulse and glide means you have to drive a Prius slow.

And another thing, you're not driving in neutral , it jus means you can get neutral at a certain throttle position which means consuming no battery or petrol.

I drove diesels for well over 300,000 miles, and I loved them at the time. But time and technology moves on.

There was a time I was a die hard TDI fan !!!!!!

Pulse and glide doesn't work on the motorway. At least the "neutral" part.

It works up to 74 Kph , in the MK II at least.

However, you can still use battery on the motorway on descents.

I think you are misunderstanding diesel drivers to be honest. People don't buy diesel engined cars because they are hardcore fans of diesel engines (except for fancy pigeon :pac:). People buy them because diesel engined cars are the only kind of cars that suit their needs.

Maybe on the Prius, but it should work pretty well on a manual diesel engine since the momentum of the car will keep the engine running and no fuel will be needed to keep it running. It probably even works better on diesels than petrols because on diesel engines there is no butterfly valve so there is less resistance making it easier to keep the engine turning.

LOL if people can believe it, there was a time not that long ago I was talking about TDI's like I was Nissan Leafs. :D

I do have a twin turbo zx and v8 BMW too, both petrols.

I just hate eco nuts :D

I have a 5 litre petrol, and a 3.8 litre petrol sports car. My wife drives a Volvo 1.6 turbo diesel v60.
Being a fairly keen cyclist, and , as I would hope is clear from the above, not an eco nut, I feel guilty about the diesel and wish we had never bought it. It is a fantastic car, great to drive, suits our needs etc, etc, but diesel is, quite simply, a filthy disgusting fuel that should be banned from the roads in its current guise. I despise it.

No I was an absolute TDI Nut and I have to say they were great engines, unrefined as hell but I never had an single engine problem with VAG engines , apart from their non turbo 60 HP crap. they were different. So I have plenty of miles of diesel driving.

There are lots of people who buy TDI today because of the cheap "road" tax, not because they suit their needs, though they may "think" that suits their needs.

i.e. Ferrari which hides it's Co2 emissions by being part of the Fiat Group.

    Ferrari don't do diesel.

There are some reports they may be developing a diesel motor for Maserati, but have emphatically gone on the record to say Ferrari will never run a diesel engine.

Well you're not comparing like for like really with a car of more power.

The CVT isn't for everyone, I'll grant you. I think they suit diesels very well. I had it in the B6 Audi, unfortunately, they had to limit the torque because of the rampant multitronic failures, luckily, mine had the ECU replaced before I got it.

When you said you'd take a prius over most diesels were you not including more powerful ones?

    Limited enough selection if so.

If I had no choice if I were looking for a particular type of car then I'd have to choose the diesel if there were no alternative.

But Diesel would be my absolute last choice.
