Oi you!!!!! Just spotted this now... So you're gonna snub me in Kinvarra for that auld grumpy bogger :D:D

I'm off to withdraw all my votes I gave you :D:D:D

Ahh sorry Marty, I forgot you're a bogger too :p its your city like sophistication that confused me.

Will you do kinvara too? We can have pre Rotterdam pints, the midlands bogger will be there too :D

Yep, Kinvara is a regular run for me now :)
Bogger.... I'm no bogger, I'm a city slicker I'll have you know :D:D
Will be good to meet yourself and the midlands bogger. Are you sure pints are a good idea?? People will think we're all about the drink and not so much about the running :D:D
Ok then, maybe one or two :)

Now, lets round up some more culprits :)

    Monday 7th December 3.07 miles @ 11.09 avg hr 127 avg cadence 163
Legs felt tired doing this and I can feel the right hip too, physio tonight will put that right I'm sure. I've discovered that my very favorite black patent knee high boots aggravate my foot :( there really is only one thing to do here – buy new boots :D although a quick from memory count suggests 12 pairs really should be enough

    Tuesday 8th December 3.3 miles easy @ 10.46 avg HR 127 avg cadence 164 with 4 x 100m strides

A run of two weathers, left the office the sun was shining and I even dug out the sunglasses. Went out in a t-shirt and my lightest 3/4 lengths, bit nippy but pleasant enough. I had set up the watch for 3 miles @ easy HR and then 6 x 100m strides as per the plan, first time using a workout. The first mile and half was lovely, legs feel great after physio session last night, then the heavens literally opened and dumped a ton of freezing water down along with some gale force winds, nothing I could do so just embraced it, the wind made the rain hurt though!! Finished the 3 miles just at the customs house so decided to do the strides there but at that point I was freezing cold and wet through so I just did 4. I hadn't programmed in a rest between the strides which was probably a mistake(?) so I'm not sure if I did them properly, I think I figured out that there's a 'countdown' to the next rep and it buzzes at the start and finish. Progression run tomorrow so will get a better idea on that how it works!.
Interesting to see both today and yesterday have same avg hr but different paces.

Wednesday 9th December: Session; Progression run:
    Plan said: 2 miles w/u 6 mis easy, 6 min MP, 2 miles c/d)
    Actual: 8 miles @ 10:38 avg hr 136 avg cadence 167
    https://www.strava.com/activities/447071632/laps

So I set the watch up for this and the first issue I had was the HR zones for the 'warm up' section are so low I'd have been better off walking!! The fact that I left the house late and was 7 mins later starting from the train station that I'd planned didn’t' help. Anyway, the first 2 miles the watch was buzzing like mad telling me I was over my HR zone, 2nd section was 6 mins easy, this was fine, my usual easy HR zone, 3rd section was 6 mins HR MP and I laughed when the watch beeped to tell me to go into that section I literally turned a corner and straight into a long hill run. Before I knew it was still 4 miles from work and back into cooldown mode so I wildly misjudged the distance I needed to cover. Anyway, nothing to do but carry on and this was my favorite part of the run, through Castleknock and into the park which looked stunning in the early morning light. I may have done another MP HR section through here oops! The whole point of this week is to try out things so I know now where I am on the runmute regards distance etc and when this run turns into big chunks at MP I'll cover it more quickly. A lovely morning if a bit windy but much better than waiting till later when the rains have arrived again.

How are you measuring your cadence ? Is there a gizmo to do that for you ? I normally just count footstrikes for a given number of seconds and then do sums.

    Bummer about the boots :(

    :(

My shiny new FR220 measures it, interesting that its so low, I'm not planning to try & drastically improve it but am becoming more conscious of foot turnover - hopefully, slowly over time I can increase it & improve my paces.

I am no expert but not sure how accurate the cadence figures are without the footpod add-on so I would used BG method as a sanity check every once in a while.

Ah thanks M, I didn't realise there was a footpod, I've never measured cadence before so was interested to see it appear on strava with the new watch - will do the BG check! I think I asked on here about it before & was more or less told not to worry about it but if anyone has anything to add to that advice as always is appreciated :)

From what I observed in Longwood there was zero up with your cadence, you shortened your stride on the hills and strided out on downhills which is what is advised i believe. I wouldn't be trying to alter your running stride going into a marathon plan FD. Enough to be worrying about without thar. Maybe that's not what your on about so feel free to ignore the above.

No it's very accurate and doesn't need a footpod. If wearing the HRM it is is even more precise. It somehow detects the impact of footstrikes.

Thanks B, yeah I'm defo not going to change anything drastically, as you say heading into marathon training. I think tho the most efficient cadence is 180 and mine is a good bit under that, it probably needs improving at some point & I guess its interesting to see it recorded beside my paces.

The fact that it uploads my workout to my phone automatically was exciting enough (yep, I'm that sad...) now it accurately measures my footsteps too - you gotta love Garmin :)

No haven't tried it yet :)

ahh You're not tracking yourself with it. While you are running your social media friends can see real time live mapped updates of your run.

Drives my fiends mad i'd say but feck them , they are forever sending me candy crush invites so i look on it as payback.:D

:D so instead of having to wait (presumably with bated breath) for my updates here they can see it happening live??
Yes, I can see several unfriendings happening in a matter of seconds :D I might give that one a miss...

ha ha! yep agreed, although..... I might turn it on for Rotterdam so meno & aquinn can shout at me through their respective laptops, I know they both love a good online tracker - pity you can't have a two way feed though, it'd give a whole new meaning to the term 'virtual pacer' :D:D

    Thursday 10th December 4 miles @ 11:29, avg hr 124, avg cadence 162

Made a real effort to keep this at recovery pace after yesterdays progression run. Mother nature seems determined to ensure I get a soaking on every run as again the sun was shining when I left the office, I took no chances today though & had my light jacket on, sure enough it rained almost in the exact same spot as Tuesday :)

Friday 11th December: rest day from running, had planned to do strength session but Christmas lunch, followed by a trek back into town for a gig I didn't make meant that didn't happen, so epic fail on the strength this week *must do better*

    Sat: 12th December - plan said 4 miles easy, actual was 3.1 miles @ 8.55 Cabinteely park run + 1 mile cooldown @ 10.56

It was absolutely bucketing down when I left the house, I've never seen the M50 so wet and in fact I hit a patch of standing surface water just before Tallaght exit and the car started to aquaplane  luckily there was no one in either of the other lanes and I got control back very quickly but I got the fright of my life. The rain had lessoned a bit for the run but the course was super wet with lots of puddles the whole way around. It didn’t stop 30 people from taking part though :)
Had every intention of jogging this today although the first lap was bang on 9 min miles so epic fail there, maybe I needed to run the adrenaline out of my legs. I knew I was going faster than easy but it didn't feel like I wasn’t pushing at all. The first time up the hill, at what I thought was a fairly easy pace, I was passing people, clearly they were also doing an easy run but sticking to it! Lap two I did make an real effort to pull back the pace and it came in @ 9:11 but again was still passing people. I noticed it was all men I was passing and then a thought struck me, how many women were in front of me?? - I coulnd't see any but knew 2 girls had passed me on the start line so they were out there ahead, was I 3rd lady? last lap @ 8.32 (oops) to finish 4th lady (1st in my age category). Dam Dam Dam, what if I'd gone out faster, or tried to race it, the 3rd lady came in in 26.32. Anyway, I wasn't supposed to be racing so best let it go. Followed up with a mile jog around the course to pick up the signs then into the coffee shop for some token drying, coffee and, as its Christmas, a mince pie and cream - yum. Meno hope you got everything dry eventually!!! And a possible addition to the marathon plan, Mullingar Half Marathon on Paddys day as a way to do my 22 mile run *with stuff*. Rotterdam is costing me a fortune – e40 for trim and tom brennan 5k and another e40 for Kinvara which I havent signed up to yet! Dear Santa...

    Sun 13th December – 12 miles @ 11:30 avg HR 128 avg cadence 163.

The first part of this wasn't too bad, it was spitting rain although quite cold. My running buddy cancelled at the last minute but that was fine, headed off on the same route as last week, down chesterfiield and back around the north road. I met TFGR at about mile 4.5 and jogged along with her for a while chatting about plans and running in the rain :) nice to see you again today C, I hope the rest of your run went well. I headed back to the car, took a few sips of water, changed my jacket as it was very wet by now and headed back down chesterfield ave again. North Road is not the pretiest route so I decided I'd go the other side this time, backwards through the S bends I knew it was going to be harder to keep my HR low on the hills but glad I took the route as the views in parts are stunning. I saw my watch beep at 9 miles and didn’t notice anything amiss but when I checked again the screen seemed to have frozen! it didn’t respond to any amount of button pressing, nothing for it but to carry on, HR & paceless... I reckon I didn't do a bad job keeping it nice & easy and I knew the distance of that route anyway added to the 5 I'd already done all I needed to do was a quick up and down from Castlknock gate to the 1st roundabout & back to bring it to 12. I had the wrong head gear on today, just a snood which when wet made my head feel cold. Anyway, glad to have gotten this done, and solo too, without any problems. There is nothing nicer than a long hot shower after a wet miserable run and I stayed there till the water ran out, lovely.

    Week: 34.6
    MTD: 59
    YTD: 1,141
    Rotterdam 17 weeks

Well done on the parkrun! I can't do them as the kids have stuff on Saturday mornings but I sometimes check the results and see where I'd come if I ran!! I might try and do one over Xmas.

thanks C although I should be getting a wrap on the knuckles for going off plan on week 1  lesson learned...

Yes you should definitely do one over xmas! I love parkrun, I started in Marley when I was trying to break 30 mins for the 5K, a group of us used to go over every sat morning aiming to beat our times from the previous outing. I've never done Tymon though which is your local one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭chickey2

Tymon is my local but I've only done it once. I've run Marley a couple of times but not in ages. Will have to get sorted and do one soon.

Usually I'd agree, but my bath is rubbish, too deep and too short :( also, definitely not at 1.30 in the afternoon :)

thanks :) and likewise despite the initial niggle, glad to hear its gone as quickly as it arrived!
