No no no, baths all the way! Glass of wine optional:)

Great week for you and nice run today. Delighted to see things going so well.

Usually I'd agree, but my bath is rubbish, too deep and too short :( also, definitely not at 1.30 in the afternoon :)

thanks :) and likewise despite the initial niggle, glad to hear its gone as quickly as it arrived!

Shower *every* time. If you're taking a bath this time of year you need a servant boiling kettles and scurrying in to top up the water every 5 mins or so.

Did not realise you had started the plan, FD. Seems you're off to a good start with that 5k at MP. Loads of dead time over the holidays for the running too :)

    Monday 14th December: 3 miles @ 11.14 avg hr 127 avg cadence 163

Weather not as bad as I'd feared :) still got wet though but a nice slow easy run down the quays & back. Wind resistance on the way down, wind assisted on the way back :) Could easily have included an accidental swim too as the Liffey was extremely high, almost tipping the top of the wall in some parts.

PM: 30 mins strength session A, 15 mins foam rolling

    Tuesday 15th December: 4 miles @ 11:15, avg hr 134 followed by 6 x 100m strides

Am like a jack in the box dying to get cracking on Wednesday session, let's see if I feel the same in the morning!!! It was absolutely MISERABLE out today, cold wind and driving rain, reminded me a bit of when I was training for my first half marathon in early 2014, I almost threw the towel in a few times in that training cycle I hated every second of it. Not this time though! Winter miles make summer smiles, right? It definitely makes a difference when you have a purpose though, otherwise I'd have just gone shopping...I was trying to keep the watch dry so it wouldn't freeze on me again so I wasn't monitoring my HR as much as I should have. Also, I messed up the first set of strides because I ran when I should have rested initially.

    https://www.strava.com/activities/450579855/laps

PM: 2 rounds of strength session in the club gym – could really feel not having done this at all last week, will try and get up on Friday PM too for a second session.

Wednesday 16th December 8 miles @ 10:42 – Session, progression run. The instructions for this were:

    2 miles @ easy (HR Zone 2 max 135)
    8 mins @ MP (HR zone 3 max 144)
    8 mins @ hmp (hr zone 4 max 154)
    8 mins @ 10k (hr zone 5 max 185)
2 miles cooldown – I had only set the watch up for 1 mile cooldown so 6,7 & 8 below are all cool down miles. I've also only realised now that I left out an 8 min @ steady section in the workout setup....

    https://www.strava.com/activities/451018856/overview

Lap  Distance  Time  Pace   GAP   Elev   HR

      1   2.0 mi   23:02   11:31 /mi   11:33 /mi   -11 ft   126 bpm

      3   0.7 mi   8:00   10:50 /mi   10:22 /mi   37 ft   142 bpm

      4   0.8 mi   8:00   9:39 /mi   10:05 /mi   -51 ft   147 bpm

      5   0.9 mi   8:00   8:39 /mi   8:44 /mi   -18 ft   162 bpm

      6   1.0 mi   11:11   11:11 /mi   11:43 /mi   -58 ft   139 bpm

      7   1.0 mi   10:49   10:49 /mi   11:21 /mi   -65 ft   136 bpm

      8   0.8 mi   9:33   10:45 /mi   10:43 /mi   5 ft   141 bpm

The MP section was uphill the whole way as I exited Roselawn and upwards into Castleknock Village, same as last week  nothing I can do about this, I would have liked to have seen 9:20 & 8:20 for the HMP & 10K sections as they were flat from castleknock down chesterfield ave, oh well. I could have pushed a bit more too looking at the HR's above.

The jack is well and truly out of the box :D absolutely LOVED this run, especially the HMP & 10K sections, it's warm out there this morning but running through the park as the sun is coming up is the most fantastic way to start the day – having said that I'll be happy to push this session to Thursday next week so I can do it when I'm off work :) I did find it hard to keep pace & hr low on the last section down the quays – it 'felt' easier than the readouts were giving so I'm not going to worry too much about that either.

I tired to capture the sunrise, clearly I need lessons in photography, it really doesn't do it justice at all...

Am really going to need a watch lesson. Well done, what a super run early in the morning.

The watch is waterproof so shouldn't be freezing on runs.

yep, that was my understanding but clearly there's a limit to its waterproofness! It got very wet on Sunday in fairness and when I got home to google, I found lots of people with the same issue and thankfully a solution! Will give you a lesson Saturday over coffee :)

Oh, I was going to wear it sailing as thought it would be ok but then only didn't as it might end up smashed from sailing exploits ie not in the boat but alongside it, again.

I saw some people posting in the goals thread so it got me thinking about my own goals for this year, I never stated specific goals at the beginning of the year, probably because I was injured and watched each race pass me by but loosely I wanted a 24:xx 5K, a 52:xx 10k, and sub 2 hour half. So, two goals reached. I'm also really delighted to have reached 1,000 miles for the year, in fact I'll be closer to 1200 by 31 December :) I've also got a new 5 mile, 10 mile and half PB's (even if not the goal...) and I gave XC a good shot. All in all, considering the start I had, not a bad years running.

Looking forward, my two main goals for 2016: 1: train smart and be consistent, 2) stay injury free.

so, 2016 hopefully these are realistic & obtainable, I think so, especially if I put the work in.

    Jan-April 2016
    Tom Brennan 5K 1st Jan – 24:30
    Trim 10 mile Feb – 1:30:xx
Kinvara Half Marathon – 2:05 obviously I'd like a sub 2 hour half but I'm not sure that's realistic even still so I'm taking it off the table as a stated goal and specifically will aim for 2:05 here.
Rotterdam Marathon: my A goal for this is to run it well and enjoy it, I'm not stating any specific time goals on here, if I complete this well I'll look at time goals for future marathons, hopefully someone will keep a seat warm for me in the pub afterwards :)

    May – August 2016
10K – do a 10k specific training plan, pick a goal race and go for a sub 50 (Dunshaughlin maybe)

    August – December 2016
train for and take part in as many XC races as possible, the goal here is to be somewhere closer to mid pack than back of the pack.

    Miles: 1,500 for the year

as an aside, thanks to everyone who has given me guidance, advice and kick in the backside throughout the year, if I'd known half of what I know now a couple of years ago, well, who knows!!! I look forward to more of the same next year :p

Absolutely AM no doubt about it whatsoever imo. I also think that you may surprise yourself (in a good way!) with how well you'll do over some of those distances!

Love those goals! Especially the XC, but then I'm biased, I'd be all for year-round XC :D

Best of luck with them, I've no doubt you'll achieve them and more besides.

thanks A :) much appreciated, I was going to say 'fingers crossed' but no, hard work = results so there will be no finger crossing & hoping for the best any more :p

he he yes I thought you'd like that one :) in a very odd sort of way I really enjoyed those races, they were by far the toughest I've ever done!

Very attainable goals there AM, will be keeping a close eye on you obviously over first half of the year, open to another pacing job in Dunshaughlin if needs be.

FWIW I think that sub 2 half should be a consideration off the back of good training. Don't be quick to rule it out.

thanks Laura, absolutely and I can reassess as I go along but those are my starting points from Jan 1.

Maybe this is an inside joke I'm missing here, but XC is not dangerous! Easier on the body than pounding roads or running tight bends on the track. But, as I said I'm probably missing a joke here or something! :)

Good luck with the goals Firedance!

Thanks P! Yep its a joke - well sort of, Aquinn was left traumatized by her one & only XC outing :p its not for everyone I guess :)

But being serious for a second, if there are hills on the XC that can be tough on the achilles I think (have a niggle there myself that I'm watching right now). Grass is kinder than the hard surfaces for sure. Saw your post on the "goals".

(I'm sure you know this anyway and don't need telling ...)
