    Sunday 22nd Nov 10 miiles @ 9.16 avg hr 163

A girl passed me at the start and on the back of her tshirt was the slogan 'I can and I will', perfect, I've been reading a lot recently about using a positive mind to achieve what you want and her slogan was exactly what I needed today. I'll be honest, I woke up this morning with very negative thoughts, its cold, its hilly, I'm a crap runner why am I bothering etc but nonetheless I put my bag in the car and set off for Dungarvan, Co. Kilkenny (who knew there was another one!). Gave myself a good talking to in the car, I'm doing this because I love running, I enjoy achieving something so lets do this.

Got down about 10.30, picked up my number very quickly, changed, did a bit of a warm up, I had done my pre run routine before I left the house but 90 mins in the car meant I'd do some of it again. Foot felt fine, right hip was a bit sore but did some work on that. Everything looked very well organised.

    Miles 1-5: splits 9:02 9:31 8:56, 9:19 9:07
Met HelenAnne at the start line, wished each other luck and I lined up somewhere in the middle. I went with a t-shirt and shorts in the end, turned out the weather was absolutely perfect for racing, about 7 degrees, sunshine & no wind. The race started without a hitch just a little outside the village, when we ran through there were gangs out cheering on, a big group of young kids included, it put a smile on my face that was to stay there for most of the race. So the course as it turns out is 'undulating' in other words, there are hills everywhere....Today though I tried out two new things, firstly instead of powering up the hill like a lunactic and knacering myself I paced myself properly, small steps and powering my arms, the second was using the downhill to my advantage, I'm not great at this (probably because I've usually exhausted myself!!) but today I flew down every hill. The miles ticked by nice & quick and I thought of nothing other than I can and I will. I got to the halfway point and analysed, everything felt good, my breathing was not overly laboured, my legs were not tired. Good.

    Miles 6-10 splits 9:30, 11:00, 10:01, 7:14, 9:08

I began to pass a couple of people here and there, who had gone out too fast obviously and I knew 'the hill' was coming at some point but, very unlike me, I hadn't looked at the course route at all. Turns out there's a hill before 'the hill' I spotted a sign at mile 7 that said 'dig deep now' mmm did Tang put that there!! ok, so it begins. I only glanced up the hill a couple of times, better not to know its neverending, right? it does kind of level a bit at one point and the relief was lovely, then up again, passing people, not being passed, encouraging any girl I saw walking to keep going. Whatever happened today I was NOT walking up a hill. I can and I will I hadn't seen Krusty at the start but saw he might do the race today, I figured he'd been up this hill in front of me powering on in true Krusty style, Helen too and I wasn't going to be the one who failed :) I was so delighted with how I felt, it was hard yes, my breathing was labouring yes but I knew relief was coming in the form of the flying mile..

    Flying Mile 7:14
Interestingly two boards 'legends' gave me opposing advice on how to handle this hill. One told me I should be doing 8 min miles + and not to worry about falling (I do have a fear of falling on steep downhils), the other said 'don't go too nuts' on the downhill mind the body & your technique. Right, helpful :D I decided I'd see how I felt. I crossed the matt at the top of the hill and just went for it remembering to lean forward from the hips and let gravity do its thing, I passed everyone in front of me on the way down, they looked like they were jogging. I possibly could have found a bit more speed here as I did hold back a little on the steeper parts, it was so much FUUUUUUNNNNNN! Crossed the matt at the bottom to see 7:14 on the watch :D Close enough to 8 min miles

The last mile home was fine, there was a small uphill and I could feel it my legs at that point, they were tired but not done in. I could hear the guy on the tannoy, nearly there, stick with the pace, around the corner to see 1:32:xx on the clock, last push home, smiling all the way, I can and I will. I don't actually know my official time, Barry did you see it somewhere? My watch says 1:32:56, the clock said 1:33:08(?) so I'm not sure yet. Either way, my last 10 mile was Brian Boru clontarf in 2014 in 1:39:52.

Met HelenAnne again in the hall & she was happy with her race too, lovely to see you today and well done on your flying mile!!! super stuff

On a flat course I'm fairly confident I could have maintained 9:09 - 9:20 pace and I felt like I could have run another mile today, I wasn't in bits crossing the finish line, I had worked hard yes but the benefits of the HADD HR training are there to be seen. In the RNR half marathon I was falling apart by mile 6, I was dead by mile 10. I"m really happy with today. I can start to think positively about the upcoming marathon training. I can and I did :)

    Official time 1:32:54
    Flying mile 7:11

yes, it will, I was worrying a bit about the training & the long miles but today has put my mind at ease, obviously I have several more mountains to climb training wise but it feels more manageable now.

Only 7 .. and Castle Rock is not really a hill, so really 6Hills.

    No bother to you!

I was been reading a local running blog just now, and they have a report on the "7Hills and 7Beers" which happens every November. I remember being passed by some of these guys the day I did a walk of the 7hills with friends last year. Hardcore hill runners who must complete the route in pairs, but also drink a full pint of (full-strength) beer in a pub before each of the 7 hills. They run the route in the usual order so are going up Arthurs seat (250m steep climb) having drunk 6 pints in a couple of hours .... Anyway the 2015 event was yesterday it seems and the world course record for the event was smashed, with one team bringing it in 2hr 22mins which is only about half an hour slower than the winner of the beerless event!.

Thought it would amuse you give the beer mile connections ;).

When I saw the mention of the record smashed, the glimmer of an idea formed ... to set that as the A-goal for the race in June (without pints). But then I read down to see the time - not a chance of meeting that unfortunately.
