20:25 A319 EI-EPU positioning into Belfast City from Dublin

    http://fr24.com/2015-03-28/20:25/12x/EIN990/5ddc75d

Cohort EI-EPR coming up behind from Heathrow.

I seen a 737-800 positioning to cork also.

I'd imagine there will be quite a bit if positioning tonight and tommorow. A 757 from Shannon will position to Dublin tomorrow for Easter. (On second thoughts, I think its possible that EI will operate an A330 into Shannon tonight and send that directly to Bordeaux rather than positioning the 757. Saves a little fuel and Airport charges.)

Earliest I've ever seen this flight arrive at. The time scheduled time of arrival is actually accurate on flightradar. Over one hour early!

Pretty much all of the flights flying over Ireland now from the US, no matter where they are flying to have ETA's a lot earlier than the STA as a result of the speeds.
Aren't some of those speeds (630 Knots) just below the speed of sound?

Back in 1964, EIN104 on the 707 was scheduled to take just 40 minutes longer... including the stop in Shannon!

In 1960 on the Supper Connie it needed another five hours!

We will never see that sort of quantum leap again :(

Sometimes they even break the speed of sound according to ground speed. But the speed of sound is defined by airspeed, and you have some wind at that height in the middle of the Atlantic, so the plane may be going 50 KTS slower in airspeed than on ground speed.

Jet stream is usually quite a bit faster than 50 Kts, one recorded a while back was 220 Kts, which meant a significant increase in ground speed, and shorter flight time.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11337617/Jet-stream-blasts-BA-plane-across-Atlantic-in-record-time.html from January this year reports a New York to Heathrow time of 5 Hrs 16 minutes, and an arrival time 90 minutes ahead of schedule. What is also a problem is when the westbound flights can't avoid the winds, we've seen more than a few 757's dropping into Shannon this winter to take on extra fuel, as for some European departure points, if the wind is above a specific level, they don't have the capability to get all the way across non stop.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

NO speed of sound is relative to the Medium you are passing through, the aircraft are still flying at their normal cruise Mach which depending on many factors can be from 78% to 86% of the speed of sound. (Trying to cover most commercial types that cross the Atlantic). The speed they are covering the ground is faster but it is still flying through the air at the same speed.
