Nissan €4,000 Scrappage Deal and the Nissan Note

    Hi Motoring Folks,

    TLDR:
I am looking into buying a new Nissan Note under the Swappage deal. It would cost me 12,195 after trade in. I am wondering if you guys can recommend any small but spacious alternatives in the €10-14,000 range.

    http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/nissan/note-hatchback/summary/26191-5

    Long Version:
So I've been eyeing up new cars for a little bit. I'm looking for something small, but not tiny, practical and spacious. Whatever I get will be transporting bikes / come with roof racks.

I have previously only considered buying pre-owned but the 4000 euro scrappage deal has piqued my interest, as my current car would get me 1000 euro max on a regular trade in or private sale.

I've read reviews, and looked at the car and it looks good to me. I have yet to give it a test drive.

The model I am looking at, the base model, retails at €16,195, so including trade in I'd be paying 12,195

If I were to sell my current car privately, that would leave 13,195 for a non-Nissan alternative. There might be wiggle room on a cash sale for a new car which could conceivably bring my budget to 14,000.

I am not Knowledgeable about cars in the slightest, I'd be really appreciative for any advice!

    In case anyone's wondering

    http://www.nissan.ie/offers/new-vehicles/nissan-scrappage-€4000?gclid=CJz7ovPG-MICFclt2wodJi4AIw

That's quite a good deal. Resale value won't be great but what harm.
There's really nothing new out there that size for €12k straight.

I would go with the note if it was me. It would be well worth getting the SV if possible.

It's a matter of choice really €14,000 would get you a new Toyota Yaris which would prob hold its value better

    Hi Colm,

Thanks for the response. When you mention resale not being great - is this a Nissan thing, or will this deal cause a substantial markdown to exist in the resale market in a few years time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Both of the above.

You could try the Toyota Verso or a Ford B-Max. Citroen C3 Piccaso and Honda Jazz are to more. Not sure what the prices for any of them is do. Just some options if you want to look around a bit before buying the Note. Seems a very good deal for the Note do. Not all Nissans have bad resale value the Qushqai,s is very good thats because there is a big demand for them 2nd hand.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

We are looking at the same deal. We had a budget of 10 for a second hand car but saw this new one as a good option and help keep away the headaches.

They havent been too generous with negotiations though.

4 grand off is generous though. Are you upset they won't give you a bit more? Maybe they don't have it to give.
I wouldn't rate the new pulsar, but at €15-€16 grand who cares if its not as good as a €23k Golf.

Sorry, that came across worse than I meant it too...

First time show room buyer so had expected a harder sell but it was pretty much take it or leave it offer.

You wouldn't blame them tbh, they're probably making nothing out of those deals and just buying market share.

With a deal like that it will usually be take it or leave it. You might get a free service or a few little accessories but they won't budge on the purchase price

Do you thinks its a good car for the price?

Yes, was looking at the XE. We've been quoted 13, 195 with delivery. Metallic is an extra 500.

    Can't really justify the SV

Yeah, to be fair its a lot of car for the money. You get Bluetooth and cruise control and stuff thst you wouldn't usually get on a cheap car.

That's fair, thanks for your replies. Our focus is on just a car which gets from a to b, is reliable and room for family. Not overly concerned with the above to be honest but the car seems to tick our boxes.

We just can't afford the worry of breakdown and expensive repairs and service we may get with second hand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That makes sense. Then again there are plenty decent cars from good makes available for €6000-7000 but these would be 6-7 years old. You can keep this twice as long and it'll still be newer at the end of the day.
Go for it id say. Just don't scrimp on maintaining it once the warranty runs out. New cars need to be minded too.

Thats very true! I said this to someone else earlier to someone and I know it doesn't really apply to you but I think it really is worth upgrading to the SV.

It gets you some nice extras like electric windows, a/c, and alloy wheels.
But none of these are things you have on the cordoba so you won't miss them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The base model has electric windows.

Worth trying, nissan hardly actually want a load of scrap cars.

    Terms and Conditions

Available on Micra, Note Juke and Pulsar Models only
    Available at participating dealers only
Qualifying trade-in vehicles must be registered I the Republic of Ireland for at least 6 months previous to date of trade in
Qualifying vehicles must have valid NCT and road tax certificates or certificates that have expire no more than 6months prior to date of trade –in.
Offer only applies to vehicles registered by 31st Jan
This is a mutually exclusive offer and no other offer apply
This is a limited offer – check with your local dealers for details.

Interesting, looks like if the car is out of tax and test less than 6 months, you'd be ok. Also doesn't say you need to be the registered owner any length of time.

Would make the Juke very cheap too - under 16k. They seem to hold their value quite well dont they? Nissan dealers generally offer 1500 cash discount, so this deal looks good if you have trade in worth less than 1k

I don't think you will get any further discount than the 4k already offered, cash or not.

    Beware

Metallic Paint €500 & Delivery €1,000 adds €1,500 to the bottom line

According to 1 dealer this condition

"Qualifying trade-in vehicles must be registered in the Republic of Ireland for at least 6 months previous to date of trade in"

means the person trading the car in must be have been the registered ownerfor at least 6 months before the date of the trade in

Bit of Joke really for a large company to leave out such information

Nissan\Windsor motors did something similar in summertime & I changed a07 note for a 142 sv note. With this deal it was cheaper to buy a new car than a nearly new model

The old car was a 1.4 and new car is 1.2 - dealer told me the newer model had more power than my old car...maybe so, but 1.2 engine is too small for this car. It doesn't have acceleration or power (regardless of what dealer said). I've also had a couple of issues with the electrics in it...nothing major, but just needed a reset.

One feature it has which (IMHO) is useless, is the stop\start engine. Basically the engines supposed to turn off if you are stopped in traffic etc. But it wont if you have ANY electrics running (air con, radio, lights etc)....things you'd normally have on while driving :(

Also one thing I find really annoying is that when I am turning, I can feel the mechanics turning in the floor!!!(from turning the steering wheel).

Having said that for the money (and remember you are getting 4k off the list price of a new car), the size of the car is huge! Great size for a family car(if that's what you are after). If its power & performance at least get the 1.5 diesel...but not the 1.2

As for resale value....I don't think this deal will damage the resale value. Performance & reliability will have more effect

Also as an aside...I've heard the bigger more exp pulsar has the same issues with engine sizes (1.2 petrol or 1.5 diesel).

Delivery of €1000 is very high for a Nissan. Even Audis and BMWs delivery charges cost less than that.

Maybe I'm a bit delusional, but would you not be better off just haggling the €4,000 off the price?

Surely you'd be doing them a favour by not giving them an old banger that they'll have to pay someone to scrap?

Or at the least, buying something like this and selling your own car privately?

Pity they're not doing it on the Leaf.

    I'd take a new one of them @ €17k.

Is this not a €5000 scrappage rather than €4000?

    How?

Its minimum €4000, if your car is worth more than €0 you may get more

Its a dealer top up. The dealer usually will offer a 1500 cash discount, as such if you arrive with a car worth 0, he will give you 1500 trade-in for it. With this promotion, he will give you 4000 for it.

If you arrive with no car to trade in, he will generally give you a 1500 cash discount

I arrived with a car the dealer said was worth 2500 trade, but the max he would give was 4000 on a trade in, os it was no benefit to me- i.e. the promotion is only worth your while if the car your trading in is worth less than 2500. For somebody with a car worth scrap, its a good deal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Soarer

Surely to <insert fictitious religious icon here> it'd be worth their while to give a €4k discount to cash buyers and not have to deal with a rubbish trade in?

I've a feeling I know the answer to this one, but I'll ask anyway . . . is there no regulation at this stage of "dealer & delivery" charges?

The EU took a while, but it eventually managed to beat Ryanair and others into shape and tell them to include their "Booking on Monday" charge, "You want a toilet on the plane?" charge, "We have to pay our staff too you know" charge, etc . . . into the headline price and not be schneaking them in at the end of the transaction. Have they tried this with the car folks and their "oh, you want it painted and with 4 wheels attached" charges yet?

I don't mind what they call their extra charges as long as it's transparent. If Nissan tell me they will sell me a Note for €16,195, is there not some sort of obligation to be able to come through on the offer without the bit about "Ah, sure it costs us a grand to get the vehicle from the docks to the garage, these things don't drive themselves you know . . ."

Just wondering, like. I am thinking of going for their offer, but I *really* don't want to spend time and effort without knowing what the car will actually cost me at the end of the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Wouldn't that be price fixing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭zagmund

Err, not as such. If McDonalds advertise that I can get a burger for €1 that's not price fixing, that's setting a price. Same with cars. If McDonalds and Burger King both happen to independently come to the conclusion that they will only sell burgers for €5 *that's* price fixing.
