You finished the 10k very strongly though - I was running with you until a little after the 6k mark and you pulled away from me after that - well done on a very solid time during peak mileage.
Were you the SBR runner, who joined me on the first hill? Thought you were going to hang in there until the bitter end (and was hoping you'd take a twist at the front :)),but figured you were bunched when you fell off the pace. Sub 34 for you I reckon on a flatter course like Dunshaughlin.

Yeah that was me. I was grand on the hills but struggled to hold onto your pace on the flat and downhill sections...sorry I couldn't help this time around! Sub 34 would be great, hopefully be targeting it for the Wex Senior road race in May.

Another from Enniscorthy today. I opted out of this last year due to a mix of injury and poor racing, so am happy to back in 2015 with a shiny, long overdue PB! Really enjoyed the day today.

The club have a mini winter league on at the moment over 5 weeks, and it was a mile race tonight around the castle in Ferns. Got couple of miles w/u in with a few strides, then went for it. 2 of us came in under the 5 mins, we pushed each other on which was great. It measured 1.00 exactly on the Garmin and we have used the course for yrs so happy that the distance is bang on for a road mile...assume you can count this in the 10 round numbers as opposed to a track mile?

Well done on getting under 5^^, can't see myself ever getting under 6.

The last 2 days have been great PB weather, well nearly, a few seconds off on a few different trials that I run.

Number 2 ticked off, and really happy with this one. Ran the 3,000m at the Leinster indoors in AIT today. Was originally down for the 1,500m but had to swap at the last minute for a number of reasons including a sore quad and a wedding after party which meant I couldn't wait for the 1,500m. Really enjoyed this, I always thought the 3k was one of the toughest to tick off so glad to be well under the marker. Will try and get another 3k race in the summer and get closer to 9.30. Felt good during the race, got detached from the leading pack and had no one close behind so it was a bit of a time trial, so hopefully a faster time is possible in a more competitive race.

I did the Mt Julie 10k run on Saturday. It's a PB but very disappointed with the time. I was hoping to finally break the 39min mark, which I thought was soft target for me - it's a hilly route but I still thought a sub-39min would be well within my range.

An unexpected PB (by 14 seconds) in Drumshanbo yesterday. 1st 5k 19:57, 2nd 19:01 which I was pleased about. Hopefully will have 2 more entries on the table in the next month!

I certainly do not intend on being this prolific for the rest of the year! A local club was holding a mile time trial tonight at the Lourdes stadium but I nearly talked myself out of it, when I got finished early at work I talked myself back into it as the mile doesn't crop up that often. Wasn't expecting much after the 3k on Sunday, and was happy just to tick the number off. Not a great time, but I ran on my own from the front, well clear of 2nd so was very much a time trial. I'd estimate I ran this at about 90% effort which in encouraging and I hope something around 4.45 is possible by the summer. Now to try and get the legs to recover ahead of a 6k cross country race this weekend!

An equal indoor PB at National Indoors. Frustrating to miss the sub 56 by such a small distance, but any day that one runs a PB, even if it is an equal one, and only an indoor one, has to be a good day, particularly at such a big event. Have attached my report of Nationals for those interested.

Well done CR 7 - tell us a little about it!

It was at a nice, mostly flat, course in Adare. 500 finishers, so there was always someone to use as a crutch pacer. I've started training consistently since around October and averaging 200km or so a month. I've finished a few 5ks in 19:0x over the last few weeks so I needed to check off this one too.

Finished a 5 mile in 32 min last weekend, so I'll give that one at least another go before the end of the year. I may have a go at the HM in the summer too, PB is at 1:41 from the end of last summer. Other than that, I think the rest are probably beyond me until next year anyway, as long as I can keep the training up.

I suppose I may as well stick these up. The 5k is St Annes parkrun in January, which in fairness I ran flat out at the time. The HM was today in Bohermeen so I am obviously improving a bit. That's the only 2 races I have done this year so far.

Great to finally get the sub 1:30 monkey off my back today in Bohermeen - think there was a bit more in the tank too. Hopefully will have a 5k time to add to the table by the end of next week.

That may be it from me for a good while. Think the marathon, 10 mile, 5 mile times are out of reach and I don't anticipate doing anything shorter than 5k at the moment.

Chuffed with the 10 mile time from Ballycotton, which is a good 30 seconds faster than I had hoped to run - a reflection of having a great group to run with during the race, and lots of hard work over the last couple of months. Looking forward to giving the 5k a proper rattle soon (maybe the MSB 5K). Not in 5k PB shape yet, but hopefully will get a feel for where I am.

Might as well update this while I remember. UL 5k series last Thursday. A good effort and definitely had a lot left in the tank so there's more to come over the next few months. Things are looking up!

Getting the ball rolling with my 5 mile time from Raheny and the 10 mile from Ballycotton yesterday. Good improvement between the both based mainly off some XC training and a few XC races in between that really helped improved my strength. This will probably be the furthest I run this year with the focus now switching to the shorter stuff. Would really like to get the 400 time this year if I can get a race that doesn't clash with my main focus, which will be 800-3000m.

If you can't piss around a track in sub 60 then something is seriously amiss :p

A female club mate of mine in Melbourne who was an 800m runner who ran 2:08.9, had a best of 58.20 or something to that extent over 400m. Her 1500m time was 4:27 I think. Granted she was an 800m runner first and foremost, rather than 1500m, so she'd have done more faster type sessions, and I actually think the 400m would have suited her if she focused on it, but at the same time, she never ran a 400 fresh, always an hour and a half after a 1500m.

A current club mate of mine who ran 2:09 last year, just missed out on sub 60 a few weeks ago, but that was indoors, so he'd be looking at 59 low outdoors.

Moral of the story, as a middle distance runner if you can do 2:09 or faster for 800m, then you should be getting under 60 for the 400m assuming you aren't some sort of slow twitch guy with no natural speed. Although weather conditions play a part, and do try to get familiar with starting blocks, rather than the traditional middle distance approach of standing up immediately and running.

This is not to say that those running 2:10 to 2:12 or even slower over 800m as middle distance runners, wouldn't go sub 60. Each person is different. Just that for 2:09 or faster it should be highly highly probable.

I suppose my personal experience would tie in fairly well with that. Ran 2.10 in an 800 and then 60.xx in the 400 a few weeks later. That was off training where probably the sharpest session would have been 12 X 400 w/ 30s recovery. Would be hoping to be much closer to 2 minutes this year and would hope that the 400m will come down with that. Lots of 200s with long recovery should help too.

The starting blocks will be an issue alright. Have gotten a little pre race practice in on a few occasions but never really utilised them well. Might get some practice down in Irishtown this summer.

5 x 200m in 1/2 400m time with 6 mins recovery was a nice little session my coach in Oz had us doing. Or maybe it was 6 x 200 with 5 mins recovery. Think we did both.

It's the average time that counts. Average low 29 and a 58:xx should be there in a race, for example.

You will break 60 I'd imagine, but if you got a few races you may surprise yourself. The first 400 you are bound to make mistakes, through lack of experience, race rustiness etc.

First number up for me, and also a new PB from the My 1000 Hours 5K in the phoenix park last saturday. Race story here.

Next up is a crack at 5 mile under 30 mins in May. Later in the year, I hope to add the 10K and & half. I'd also love a shot at the 800m, although I have zero track experience. The others are probably beyond me for this year, despite what mcmillan might say.

My advice would be to leave the 400 until you've done a few 8s or 800 pace sessions. That will make a lot more difference than the practice with the blocks. Once you can tell the difference between 800 and 1500 effort, you'll easily be able to judge the level up from 800 pace!
