Bob Wakelin very sadly died of leukemia today. If you bought a Ocean game for your 8 bit computer (and others) in the 80s, chances are he'd have designed the box art.

Some really great ones, few of my favourites were Head over Heels, Batman - The Caped Crusader and Renegade. There's a lot of nice tributes out there to him.

Couple of good links to some of his work:

    https://www.exotica.org.uk/wiki/Bob_Wakelin

    https://www.digitiser2000.com/main-page/a-tribute-to-the-art-of-bob-wakelin

    RIP

That's a nasty disease alright, sad to hear he passed.

His art is one of those touchstones, seeing one brings me right back to the time, with those illustrations bring everywhere, within the scene.
He was a bit hard on himself, and how his great covers sold crap games, they also acted as the perfect setting for great games, Movie for example.

Looks like he got that SLA printed. Pricey option that and probably cost him 250+ euro for the printing alone if he didn't have his own printer.

My 3D printers are all in boxes at the moment getting ready for a move to a bigger place :)

Ya that project probably cost in excess of £500 all in I'd say. Bit pricey for a semi portable Spectrum..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,291 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

    How about this portable Spectrum.

    http://retroradionics.co.uk/shop.html#!/OMNI-128HQ-LAPTOP/p/75106221/category=0

Website is a mess and his delivery times are farcical at times (over a year for some of his projects!) but he's well-known around Spectrum groups and people are normally pretty happy with his work.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Thought I'd give this a shot here. On the lookout for Naomi cabinets, preferably 6 button each player.

Would be interested in a chihiro gun cabinet too (simply because you can use multiple gun games retrospectively (easiest starting at chihiro and working down to Naomi, instead of vice versa)

Would love one of the giant House of the Deads, but it looks like the Naomi upright is the best compromise.

Would put this in the marketplace section (if I can, as a new member?), but I thought I might get some general insight in this topic at the same time.

Anything to chip in, chip ahead :)

(and pros/cons of Naomi would be appreciated, main thing for me at the mo is that I could possibly transport in a car versus other cabinets)

Naomi bases are massive, i transported one in a car years ago. And could not get the base in lol.
I'd double check on the chihiro games as I'm almost certain that some need type 1 and others type 3 but net boot might have eradicated that or may not have applied to the shooters.
Also chihiros are way more expensive than Naomi's.
Hotd2 from what I remember runs only on early n1 which are as good as dedicated.as far I remember all i/os and sensors are compatible.
Been along time since I had interest in the n shooters so I could be talking pants and my head just doesn't hold all this shut in anymore 😂

All this talk of cabs, thinking of moving mine on, it just doesn't get any play and I still haven't installed the 2p control panel.
I'll stick in the marketplace if I am shifting it on.
Might see about installing something else in it, see if it revives my interest.

What kind of cab is it?

    Atomiswave SD cab.
Probably a little "loved" rather than minty fresh.

It always comes down to space! I'm not up to speed on the chihiro stuff at all, but with a little research I THINK that if you got the right cabinet (midi size?), youd be able to get HOTD2, ghost squad, HOTD3, virtua cop 3, confidential mission (and a newer ghost squad?) running on it.

In other words, would be worth it to get 5 or 6 games running on the same cabinet.

I'd say it would be a squeeze with the bases for Naomi (and maybe the legs), but at least theres a chance youd get it into a car, versus no chance for other cabinets?

Anyone here ever get one imported from the likes of the uk? Would be very interested to hear about costs etc.

Or if theres any floating about at the moment here (not just the gun cabinets, but basic Naomi 6-button setup)?

Kerbdog here adapted a Naomi cab, cutting down one to a more manageable size.

its by far the most univeral of cabinets but its not totally universal either . hotd3 vc3 ,a ghost squad will run on chihiro , which one i cant remember and as said some games only play on certain chihiros but i dont know if it applies to these.
confidential mission ,lupin 3 are naomi and so is hotd2 but i really think from what i remember that its an early Naomi board and not compatible with the above.(i could be wrong)is it worth it ,well that for you to decide !:)
They are easyish to disasemble but take time. your best bet is if getting from uk to factor in 150ish quid give or take.

Well with my jamma adapter you can play any console lightgun games on any cab type :)

BTW: will also be looking for a cab as soon as house move it finished...

If the gun games are Naomi gun games it gets interesting as the sensors picking up the gun need to be mounted in the monitor shroud/surround.

The Sega Naomi - great cabs in a Naomi/NetDimm/PiLoader setup. Really easy to setup with a Pi as the stock monitors are VGA you just need to interface with the control panel, the JVS-PAC is great - plug'n'play'ness
Yup, they have large bases and a van is your friend

I have issue 3 and 4 of the kickstarted Eight-Bit Magazine if anyone wants them. First to ask gets and I can post 'em off to you.

I may have been unlucky with the issues I have, but not really enough Spectrum stuff for me to bother keeping, a decent read though.

Came across this by accident tonight. If you're a C64 music fan (or even if you're not), this will give you goosebumps. Reyn Ouwehand is a genius. :)
