    Merry Christmas everyone :)

Unfortunately, Wand of Gamelon wasn't under the tree...suppose I'll have to wait. Maybe next Christmas, if I'm really really good.

Maybe fate decided not to punish you with the game.
Wand of Gamelon might be the new "Sack of coal" or "Getting forced to watch Michael McIntyre", what happens when you have been naughty.

I'd say Trump is waking up to a CDi and all the games this morning.

    Ha!
    More like Wargames....
I can see him there, in the Oval Office, with an Atari 400 in front of him, typing in that he wants to have a go of "Global Thermonuclear War"

The joys of HSE work, CNM 2 in general nursing are a scarce sight on bank holidays though. You ID folk are obviously better managers!

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

    Happy Christmas to all!

Lashed through Double Dragon 2 on the nes mini yesterday. Still remembered the trick to the cyclone kicks was to press the kick button at the apex of the jump. It's like a cheat to breeze through the game once you master that.

Then I read this today about Double Dragon 4 http://www.arcsystemworks.jp/dd4/

Check out the hilarious combo action at 1.18 Can't wait for this!

I don't mind, been a lovely day so far, on until 20:40 and off tomorrow, but Mrs Ciderman is on tomorrow, give me time to play some games!
I'm back on this Wednesday, off Thursday and Friday then on New Years Eve and Day, again I don't mind too much.

Is this the forum to be asking about vinyl records lads? Didn't really see anywhere else that jumped out.

Just looking for a recommendation of a few sites to buy some if there's anywhere good outside the eBay/adverts/gumtree likes

Santa was good to bring me a player :)

The head and goldendiscs stores are great for new commercial releases and re-issues.

For older stuff, www.discogs.com has every vinyl release ever made indexed and there is usually someone somewhere selling a copy of what you are looking for. If not you can add it to your "wantlist" and it will email you when someone puts one up for sale.

I got the rare South African release of "Wham! - Final" double album just last week from a seller on discogs so I could annoy everyone in the house with the 10 minute Christmas Pudding edit of Last Christmas...and then the news of George's death broke :(

Consider getting yourself some good stylus like the Shure m44-7 to keep the records minty.

    Speaking of which...

Dealz seem to have gotten in some Vinyl Record frames for the usual €1.49 a pop.

    Not bad really.

I plan to put some of the artwork from the DATA DISCS releases in there when I get home later today.

    Edit: These lads here:

I was in there today. Picked up a nice few!

Really need to invest in a decent player now.

Might call up to Dublin to go on a hunt soon, overdue a visit to Forbidden Planet anyways.

Got a Bush CTT-939, lovely looking machine, no speaker makes it a bit awkward for use by me but I'm sure I'll come to appreciate that in time, it's a real nice player.

I'll take a look at that. I want to get one sooner rather than later.

One I have at the moment is skipping on brand new records so I'm really sceptical about playing some of my more expensive stuff on it incase it damages them

Anyone else have a recommendation for a good player? Something that's not €1000+ though :p

Ah it's probably not great but does the job.

Got my hands on my grandmothers old collection, surprising amount of republican songs

On the topic of music, I just discovered today that Yuzo Koshiro wrote the Streets of Rage soundtracks on a PC-8800 which uses a similar sound chip to the YM2612 thats in the Mega Drive.

Then I stumbled across this Wikipedia page that is very insightful into how he composed the music, and what inspired him:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discography_of_the_Streets_of_Rage_series

Plenty of gorey details in there.

It appears that Data Discs have recorded the soundtrack from both the PC-8800 and a Mega Drive and mixed the audio together,
so it sound slightly different to what you would hear on a standard Mega Drive.

There's a good article on this here if you want more normal / elegant looking turntables:

    http://thevinylfactory.com/features/the-8-best-budget-turntables-that-wont-ruin-your-records/

A cheaper option is to buy a DJ turntable which can fit standard headshells, and really opens up a world of options on the kind of cartridges and needles you can buy for it.

You can get a direct drive turntable for as little as €129 new:

    https://www.thomann.de/ie/american_audio_ttd_2400.htm

More options here, just stay clear of the first 2 Numarks and the Akais which use the ****ty red generic needles:

That's brilliant. Thanks for all the info. I was looking at this

    https://theaudiobarn.co.uk/product/rega-planar-1-turntable-with-carbon-cartridge/

I'll try and get a good setup in the next month or so. Really is so much stuff in it though and so many options. I'm no audiophile just want something decent

The entry level pro-jects and rega's are nice tt.
There is also some very nice retro Sony's ps-q3 being one of my favs ..
If you are getting an old DJ deck outside of the technics I would say the nunmark ttxs are the best and sometimes can be had for relatively cheap they weigh a tonne though lol, the only problem is finding them with s arms

Ah I just want to get myself a good reliable setup for basic playback. I have a decent selection at the moment and want to get the best out of them and play them on something that won't **** them up.

But I'm a bit of a style dickhead as well so I want something that's a bit different looking haha

    https://m.thomann.de/ie/roland_tt_99.htm?o=6&search=1483108261

That Roland is gorgeous imo but I really don't know what to look for. Same with amps, do I need a preamp or any of that stuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,926 ✭✭✭geotrig

I know nothing about that Roland but have a fondness for all their gear.it does looks nice. that one says it has phono and line out. So due to the line out ,an amp is not needed straight off .it can hook straight up to a stereo that can take rcas. An amp could be added later on if wanted.

No criticism of the turntable conversation ongoing here, but there is a dedicated forum for audio discussion, including the trusty record player.
