Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So Red Rock is starting in January. Will it be successful? I hope it gives a couple of the others a run for their money.

Article in one of the papers today.

Interesting that most of the characters seem to be Guards. Sounds like it will be like the later version of The Bill or that Aussie show Blue Heelers.

I think it's also about 2 feuding families. I'd like if it turns out to be original and something that doesn't follow the same old soapy pattern.

    Yes.

And no. Stick to your wife from now on, it was a once off.

Yeah the fact that there are two families makes it a bit different. It seems halfway between a regular soap and a police soap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

From what I've heard, it seems that the police are going to keep getting dragged into the feud between the families, which will tie it all together. I think it might actually be pretty good - looking forward to it now anyway.

Pity. I think a modern Irish version of Heartbeat would work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,859 ✭✭✭podgeandrodge

Saw the promo, I am intrigued. But I don't watch soaps, my wife does. But it could be good. I liked "bad cop" as coined by Chris earlier.

Going by the ad, it looks like it has a decent budget at least.

The only worry I'd have is this promo is directed by a feature film director, and the cinematographer is now working on Hollywood action movies.

The TV show will not have these two involved. That said, once it's less of the Raw & Clinic type and more of the Love/Hate, then it could be good.

    No elderly characters, though.

    No elderly characters, though.

Well presumably due to this being set in a fictional Garda Station and any 'elderly' members would have nice numbers in an office somewhere and
~ not having to restrain unruly prisoners IRL
~ not have to give chase into the unknown, not knowing what to expect and with only a torch to their name IRL *cough cough*

so perhaps reflecting some reality in that sense. They may however have 'elderly' characters introduced at varying points as supporting characters and not the main actors in the station-surroundings.

This could be interesting so will tune in myself tbh,
    Just my Thoughts anywhoo,

First trailer for the show : the Garda station looks impressive with a large number of rooms and cells

Saw Bad Cop billboard near Bord Gaís Theatre this evening.

Like the caption - "It's not just criminals that cross the line" :)

edit: have already seen a few more....

And an article on TV3 website about another actor who plays the superintendent.

Shooting it in the old John Player factory on the South Circular Road apparently.

Yes, so I heard. It should give it an air of authenticity to have the indoor scenes in a real building with rooms and corridors and stairs rather than a TV studio.

They ad is highly stylized. It'd be nice to see a clip of the actual soap.

I meant within the family, like a grandmotherly matriarch or old patriarch fighting with his son over the future.

It looks like more along the lines of Raw and Clinic its a soap after all. And if it can match either it will be doing well, however I think some of the producers were involved with Deception!

It definitely won't be too similar to Love Hate. It goes out before the watershed meaning they can't show any real violence or bad language.

Visited Dublin today, walking from Heuston to Finglas and back - and the ads were on just about every billboard and bus shelter I passed by.

Safe to say, then, that if the show is a flop, it'll be a pretty big one... :o

For sure, but their promo is impressive anyway....they're making sure everyone in the country knows about the show and when it starts :)

Given the massive promo drive behind it, the producers and TV3 must be quietly confident they have a potential hit on their hands. You'd wonder if they would do all that for a show they were far from sure about.

Well they need to regardless of the quality as the need to get the word out. It's a soap

For sure, but it looks like they're spending an absolute fortune promoting the show in advance. At the very least, it would suggest they have high hopes for the programme.

They'd still have to make sure that they get an audience regardless of quality remember this is their first major soap and they have little other programming to support it.

True, but this appears to be the biggest promo for any show they've done in their 16 year history. They certainly seem to regard it as being a key part of their schedule for the next year or two.

I'd say The Apprentice was their previous biggest one but this is their first proper attempt at drama.

They tried it with the mini series Deception before but that was awful. I just hope Red Rock is better than it. They seem to have spent so much on it that I don't think they could afford for it to be another Eldorado.

Any idea what time and days it will be airing at.

I think I read they have committed already to 2 years and are filming that much anyway.

They have said they are not sticking to set times as of yet, guess they want to see where they will get the soap opera crowd. IMO Wed 8:30 and Sun 8:30 is the best option.

It's going to be interesting to see what UTV Ireland stick up against Red Rock as they both launch around the same date. Once they don't go up against any of the UK soaps they should be okay.

There will certainly be no clash of Corrie and Red Rock with UTV Ireland anyway.....they'll surely have to air Coronation Street at the exact same time it goes out in the UK (and has done on TV3 up until now).

Wednesday at 8.30 seemed to be the safest bet for them from the word go. I was also thinking Sunday at 8.30 would be a good spot for the second episode, but then they'd have to change it everytime the X Factor came around, so it seemed they were going to have to clash with a Soap at some point and Ros na Rún at 8.30 on a Thursday will be least damaging to Red Rock it seems - going up against any of the UK soaps or Fair City would have been a much worse decision in the long run. I'm a fan of Ros na Rún, but to be honest with Sky+ and the players online, it doesn't really bother me where they put it, I can watch both regardless...

I'm assuming they'll do an omnibus once a week too and plenty of repeats...

It gets out of hand they don't even earn that in ad revenue. Their spending about €5m on the programme
