Ya, the prices in other markets are only a very rough guideline.

The standard spec in Germany is woeful. Everything is extra.

The prices all seem to have crept up a significant amount.

Probably due to VW's new found conscience on CO2 values and the resultant VRT band changes. Mind you Audi/Skoda/Seat CO2 figures haven't changed for the same engines!!!

That can be a good thing too as you can spec the car exactly as you want it from bare bones to all singing and dancing - and it still works out cheaper than here.
I'd love to have that option in this market and I'd say I wouldn't be alone.

You should go take a look at the performance Ford lineup to see how that idealogy doesn't quite work out as good as you might think for the consumer. :(

Decent base spec always works out better/cheaper in the real world, given that the base price for us here is never as cheap as it is in the other markets.

I seem to remember pp was about 1200/1300 euro before.
There have been big enough increases in price all round it seems.
A nice spec R looks to be as much as an equivalent Audi s3 now.
Wait for 172 offers perhaps to improve things.

When do offers tend to open up for a new reg, e.g. 172? Is it on the stroke of 1st Jan/July or do they do it for cars that will be delivered in 172 (i.e. a few weeks earlier). I don't think my patience will stretch to July - I was all set to pick one up around last November but put the brakes on it when the new one was announced.

I'd say around early May you'll start hearing all the 172 ads...

I should add that even if you were to order a car now tailored to your spec for a 172 July delivery, any changes in spec in the meantime (good or bad!) would generally be passed onto you.

This has happened to me a couple of times. 2 years ago I chased VW Ireland to get the "Driver Profile Select" button added to my R order. They agreed to add it at a cost of around 150 quid. Then when they tweaked the spec and prices for week 22 (which they do every year), that button was actually made standard (good news) and the overall prices went up by around 2% (bad news!). My car still wasn't even built at that stage so I got the post week-22 build with the spec tweaks and I had to stump up the extra cost too.

Some new models seem to have landed in Ireland in recent days. Local dealer has one today for demo. Comfortline spec. Standard spec seems to have improved. Looking forward to seeing GTD and GTI in the flesh.

Yeah i saw a demo one on the road. The number plate said "new golf". It was Normal spec Golf that had standard halogen headlights but a LED daytime running lights in a strip incorporated. To be honest hard to tell the difference.

They're a bit better than the Cadiz... but yeah I'd have the prets. There's an option for black prets too but I've never been a big fan of black wheels. Maybe on a white car but otherwise no.

Titanium exhaust an option in Germany?

Great ad, would nearly tempt me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Possibly an option here too. Won't be cheap I imagine! Clubsport S brakes too.

Has the roof profile changed? There looks to be a bit of a hump over the front doors in any of the pics I've seen.

    I don't think so...
I did notice that the rear spoiler in that YouTube vid above has an extra lip on it. Don't know if that's standard.

    Planning on changing soon joe?
Will you go same spec as before?
Anything else out there not tickle your fancy?

No I'm really not at all.... honestly. The car I have is like new and while I do like the subtle changes in the FL, it's hardly enough to warrant getting very itchy feet over... yet. Hypothetically if I were changing I'd go for a similar spec and would probably be tempted to tick another box or two. Maybe DCC and Dynaudio (2 options that a lot of people seem to rate highly).

Very little else out there tickles my fancy. I did think that this would be my last hot hatch before practicality would be forced upon me but we got around that particular problem by buying the wife a family wagon instead ;)

Maybe an S3? The R is getting closer to it pricewise but the Audi standard spec is still miserable. Audi's and their shyster dealers leave me cold too.

I just can't see myself shelling out for a big saloon of any description for a long time yet. The thoughts of it turn my stomach! A mate of mine has a similar predicament. He has a MK7 GTI and needs something bigger. He's really struggling to pick something that's up to the GTI in terms of drive/tech/image whilst also being a bit more practical.

It won't be long until there are part numbers out there for some of the facelift parts.
It looks like that rear spoiler lip is just an add on, the discs are the same as the clubsport S. I like the look of the white R caliper cover.

    That exhaust though

Full titanium exhaust.... likely to cost a kidney + VAT right? Damn cool though!

I wonder will they even be factory options at all? They may be dealer fit options, even for the FL.

I'd say you'd find it hard to get an all rounder as good as an R without compromising in some way.

As far as I'm aware only Akrapovic do a full titanium option at present and yeah, you're talking nearly 4 grand for it. :D

Would be interested to know if it is a VW option, is it going to be an OE brand or if they would use Milltek (Racingline) or even Akrapovic.

It's definitely Akrapovic, the name is stamped onto the tailpipes.

Kind of in a similar position myself. Iv changed every 2 years from 2011, and the time to change is coming around again.

Slightly sorry that I didn't opt for the R back in 2015, but I did load up the Gti I have at present. Iv test driven the current (last?) 5 series and also A6 and both did noting for me. Unlike some on here, I don't have the need to get something bigger as the both the kids are grown up (one has his own car, the other will be driving by the summer).

I do small image (11K since Aug 15), so the additional fuel costs are a minor concern.

On a different note, I'm getting rid of my First Gti a Mk5 from 2005 today, ill be sad to see her go.

0% on new GTIs that they have in stock in Frank Keane at the moment. Presume they're not facelifts.

Unlikely. They're just trying to shift whatever of the old stuff they've left. If you're not fussed about having the latest, it could be a good punt. I think they have a Clubsport too.
