Unlikely. They're just trying to shift whatever of the old stuff they've left. If you're not fussed about having the latest, it could be a good punt. I think they have a Clubsport too.

They would want to do cash back on that €53k R they have to shift it at this stage.

I don't see it on Carzone now but it was a lapiz blue R with a hideous Oettinger bodykit bolted on. I think it had the exhaust system too which wouldn't be so bad. It was priced at 53k for a while at least.

That's it. And that's it's most flattering angle!

    Looking for opinions here.
I have owned a few GTI's over the years, with the earliest being a late 80's model and more recently a GTD and right now a Polo GT. Currently experiencing that itch for something new so naturally I am thinking GTI. However, in my hours of browsing and research my mouse keeps taking me to the Seat site and ending up on the Leon Cupra 300.
It's only just been facelifted and the Ireland configurator isn't updated yet but I have the pricelist from a local dealer. Playing around, a Cupra DSG 5 door with a few choice options in a good colour (Desire Red) with an agreed discount it's coming in a hair under 40k. A lot of money for a Seat but same price as pretty much a base GTI.

    Thoughts?

Thing is, a base GTI these days has an awful lot as standard. Granted, one or two modest options will push a GTI over the 40k mark.

What type of stuff are you adding to the Cupra?

The Seat might be a bargain when you buy it but its selling it on that might be a problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

The Seat seems to offer a lot for the money but I'd advise sitting into one first and see what you think of the interior fit and finish relative to the Golf.

That and €40k for a Seat... I'd be concerned about residuals.

The Golf is what I'd buy new, the Seat is what I'd buy nearly]nearly new. It would be worth buying a 171 demo of one in May/June just for the added few thousand off you'd get, but hen you are taking the spec/colour gamble somewhat. You will lose your hat on a Seat though, so unless it's a long term purchase and keep plan, I'd lean towards the Golf.

I went through a similar thought process when I got the Golf. I was a fast Ford man before it and was looking at a Mk3 ST first, but I got a slightly better deal on the Golf and it came down to two things, which one would my other half feel comfortable driving in an emergency (she said Golf!) and which one would have the better residuals, which was also the Golf. Ended up working out well for me, as about 2 months after I bought the Golf, Ford started doing the real deal savings event and knocked about 7k off the price of a new ST. I would have literally been sick had I bought one at the time I ever so nearly did!

You'd have been sicker if you bought an R in 2014 for ~€58k-€60k!

Depreciation affects them all, VW definitely isn't immune but I'd say Seat are on the sharper end of it.

This should give you an idea of the resale values of the Leon Cupra after 2 years:

    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/SEAT/Leon/**STUNNING-CUPRA/4618004809044573162/

Now that is the dealer's asking price, they certainly bought it from the last owner for a good bit less than that. So you could be potentially talking about losing somewhere near 8.5k/9k per year

The only Leon to buy IMO is the new 4motion wagon. Same engine and drivetrain as the golf R.

Facelifted R, GTI and GTD at an Irish dealers. (you might want to mute the audio).

They seem to always get the R standard alloys so wrong it's nearly criminal! :(

I've noticed something in that video about the headlights that would bug me. The current headlights have the indicator strip across the bottom of the unit. In the FL, the indicator doubles up with the DRL so they clearly cheaped out and decided to fill that un-used space previously occupied by the indicator with a bit of honeycomb plastic!

Luckily the prets are still a cheap option.

Yeah I spotted that on the configurator, definitely option 1 to be ticked on any R order!

Anyone got a facelift GTI/R on order? Spoke to a dealer yesterday who said it could be June before an order would land.

Well if you factory order a car it always takes 10-12 weeks to land in. There'll probably be a few dealer-spec'd cars (such as the ones in the video above) trickling through well before June.

    Lads,

Are there any better quality floor mats available for the mk7?
I just took my winters out and the carpet ones that came with the car are wearing fairly quickly.

Are there better quality VW mats available?

Checkout the user "Booth11" on the vwroc forum - she got a very nice set of tailored mats with R logos, heel scuff bit, etc... a few others on that forum followed suit. I can't remember where she got them now but a quick search there will tell you.

Not much good OEM RHD ones out there afaik.

Edit: here you go - http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/17876-replacing-oe-r-carpet-mats-whats-bestadvice-pls/?p=298381

    Thanks Joe,

They look much better than the standard ones.
Black with grey binding would suit my car.

There is an OEM VW one too... Kevin has them in his GTI, they have white threading and a very small "Golf" tag on them. The Clubsport came with similar ones (red threading with GTI tag). But none of the OEM ones have the extra heel pad and thats where they wear the fastest!

Yeah that's where my drivers one is wearing.

I bought the VW rubber mats with the thought of just using them for last winter and then switching back to the standards for summer, but I've ended up just keeping the rubber ones in there and with our climate they're just the job really!

I'd love if Monster mats did their GTI specific ones available in the US for RHD cars, but alas this isn't possible.

I did find a Chinese seller on eBay selling a full set of rubber mats with a GTI logo in red on them that looked quite decent, but they were ~€100 which is big enough money for Chinese parts.

Personally I hate rubber mats... They look terrible imo! Unless I was in and out of the car in muddy boots all day I'd never ever put them in a car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

To be honest I don't even notice them. I guess I'm not as picky about mats as you are. :D

Forgot I even still had the rubber ones in there until mats were brought up a few posts ago.

Anyone know the code for the half alcantara seats? Dealer saying they're not available anymore...

Speccing up - Santiagos, manual, innovation pack (but I'd like the bigger screen, dunno if possible with this pack) €934 for the upgraded touch screen with the pro nav and 8 speakers, I would have otherwise spent €814 ordering the 10 speaker 400w upgrade but if an extra €120 odd gets as above and the sound is also improved then maybe you could scratch the 10 speaker upgrade off? Anyone know if the upgraded nav and screen gets better sound output?

    Indium grey.

The active info is standard, heated seats come with innovation pack, extra cameras, lane assist etc not worth it. Adjustable dampers, too expensive, sunroof too expensive.

Those LED headlights, they've replaced xenon technology now have they?

They're very well specced to the fair - anything else I've missed?

(Can't believe the pretorias are only €100 extra on the R!!).
