    No.

If you left it unlocked, you're inviting any passing scobes who find it open to to vandalise it or even set the interior alight for the kicks.

Your insurance company will have a 'get-out-of-jail' opportunity to avoid paying out if they find you left your car unlocked.

Interesting point... I run in the dublin/wicklow mountains sometimes so would leave my car parked for a couple of hours in laybys etc.. I often wonder is it best to leave it unlocked (never leave anything in it) to avoid a smashed window.

I just think that if scumbags will smash a window if they are interested in something... alarm/deadlocks not likely to deter them.

Mignt be better to do what they do in the likes of Rome, leave all the storage areas open and empty, glove box, cubby storage and so on.
That way when scummers look in there is nothing worth taking.

There is a section in the manual about running in. It says for the first 1000km, don't use full throttle or go above 2/3rd's of max RPM, then gradually increase to max after 1000km.

I didn't run in my last 3 cars including my 2 week old car. I just drove as per "normal". I don't think it's as critical these days. I believe the engines may be bench run in before installation. Brakes etc might need to bed in a little and might not be at their full potential for a while.

How are you enjoying the biturbo Passat?
Can't understand why they don't put that engine in the golf for a diesel R?

I'm very impressed with it ( not being biased). For a big heavy car it really shifts and the handling in sport mode is phenomenal. Looking in the engine bay it looks a little confined due to the 2 turbo's, larger water/air intercooler and other bits. The air filter housing is so big VW put the battery in the boot. Maybe they haven't figured out how to fit it in a Golf engine bay lol.

However i think someone fitted the engine in a Golf estate as a project successfully.

Not specifically Golf R related, but just got a dent in my R repaired at Dent Pro in Sandyford. Top marks.

Those dent guys can work wonders for very small money... I've had to get ones like that fixed in the past, it's impressive watching them do it.

The link for the 18" Pretoria silver alloys that I mentioned a few pages back. Priced @ €279 a corner.
    https://shops.volkswagen.com/de_DE/web/zubehoer/p/leichtmetallfelge-pretoria-7-5j-x-18-sterling-silber-5g0071498a-88z-14?category=4313:904_VWZ_OZ:Category

It would be nice if these were available here as an option for the GTi like on the German configurator.

The R Pretorias are 19 inch and grey. Not that that justifies the difference either way.

Yeah, and the price of those 19's is crazy compared to the 18's. The 18's are also available in black.

The German configurator also list 18" Sevilla black-red as an option for the GTi. Those are going to be a pain to clean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

The R's 19" prets are forged lightweight wheels. It's not clear if those 18" versions are too, or if they're just cast alloys with a similar "replica" design to the 19's. My german's not great!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Hebegeebee

Whether they are forged is unknown and they don't give an idea of their weight either. It's another option though for a GTi if VW Ireland can get them in for you at that price point.

I think the car needs 19's tbh.... if I were spec'ing a new GTI I'd probably pick the brescias, even though the thoughts of minding diamond cut wheels again doesn't appeal.

I ordered the parkpilot when I ordered my MK7 GTI as I was afraid of kerbing the Austins due to the diamond cut finish. On my previous MK5 the diamond cut wheels were a disaster once kerbed, as the dreaded white worm set in. The park pilot on the MK7 is brilliant as it also has the sensors on the side of the bumpers (not just the front and rear) thus letting you know how close you are to kerbs. A well worth option imo.

My unmarked Austins had started corroding around the bolt holes before I traded it in.

Thinking of changing my austins and had two questions.
    1) would that affect my trade in value
    2) how much might I get for them?

If possible, hold onto them and put them back on the car again when you're trading it on. I think most prospective buyers / dealers would prefer to see it on its original wheels.

Was hoping to offset the cost of a new set....

As JoeA3 said, I think you'd be wiser to hang onto your OEM wheels for trade-in time. The dealer will be happier and the tyres should have plenty of healthy tread left on them.

You might gain in trade-in value whatever money you might have got for selling them on.

    Cheers lads.

Anyone on here gotten different alloys? Any pics? Any recommendations?

Personally, I'd rather not have to deal with diamond cut wheels again and that's all that VW seem to offer the customer here. The wife had them on her last car and white worm corrosion had set in even though they were swapped out in winter months and were unmarked.
For me the 18 Pretorias look like a great option or the 18 Sevilla black-red; 19s + potholes + reported issues with some VW wheels buckling rules them out for me

None of these wheels are too forgiving on potholes. I've knocked chips out of previous alloys (18's) on potholes.
Touch wood, my prets are still round and unmarked.

THose SR's are quite heavy though, I was tempted by them for quite some time, but would go more for the CI-R's now if I wanted that design.

The CH-R's are also just lovely and always look great.

Personally I think VAG cars look best with OEM rims rather than aftermarket ones which just don't look right imo.
