It is basically a FF propaganda tool. Does anyone take that paper seriously?

I don't think even FF supporters take it seriously.
    How could anyone?

A joke is a joke. You'll also note that the article states the "audience laughed". There was no threat, implied or otherwise.
I would agree that it is a stretch to construe a threat from what he said. But a dodgy enough thing to be joking about all the same.

Not really. It illustrates hypocrisy and was quite a good jibe. If Gerry was to avoid everything the Indo deems dodgy, he'd either have to shoot himself or turn into Brian O'Driscoll.

Well let’s try some shoesy on the other footy.

Imagine the leader of a British political party was discussing the policing of protest marches and made reference to how this was done in Northern Ireland in the past and quipped “but of course I am not advocating anything like that”.

    Would you be most amused?

What kind of dinosaur still buys newspapers ? Is it still 1994 ?

    Ah there it is.

The silly comment of the day.

This was considerably further in the past.

Is this the same Sunday Independent that has the highest circulation of any Irish newspaper we're talking about?

    Yeah - it's fairly rubbish.

It has been scientifically proven however that Sunday Independent readers have the lowest circulation of blood to the brain of any Irish newspaper's readership.

So they now refer Sinn Fein as Sinn Fein/IRA, lucky Mr Paisley is no longer with us as he had the rights on that phrase and the refer to how the editor of the Kerryman Newspaper was threatened back in 1973 so that proves Sinn Fein have form. Also that it wasn't a appropriate joke and not a laughing matter, (millionaires in New York beg to differ) On line edition also had an add for WWII tours on the continent, is this not glorifying war ? This would not be my opinion but seen the Indo is so sensitive to matters of this nature should they be running these adds, as wars had guns in them. Dear, dear me. At least whilst all this goes on they can hold back on their reporting of the winter vomitting bug for later editions.

Sinn Fein fans cannot seem to handle when the party is measured to the same moral standards of the normal parties. Let's be honest, could you imagine Kenny or Martin being caught up in the recent incidents as Uncle Gerry?

If you've ever been to any of the WWII sites in France or Belgium, you'd know that the tours are far from glorifying war.
The people who go tend to be the relatives of those who lost the war - as they go to visit the huge graveyards and the monuments covered in the names of the thousands of war dead.

Look where they came from ,look how they were formed. Can't compare with the main stream parties but can expect them to become more main stream as they progress.

Maybe it's because they want to read the 50% of the content dedicated to rubbishing them so.

I am delighted somebody put a thread up on this.

Firstly I would not class myself as a Sinn Fein supporter. I realise that Gerry Adams would have been out on his ear, if he was the leader of ANY other political party in Ireland, I also realise that Adams has made himself a hypocrite by trying to live in two worlds like an Irish Tony Soprano "a God-fáda" :)

BUT even by the right wing Indo's standards it was farcical every second article attacked Sinn Fein from different angles some tenuous to say the least.
I would not mind if it was something concrete. But it was like an Irish version of FOX news.

The likes of Adams needs to retire though, as sinn fein can never progess with him there. But he wants to to lead SF to the 2016 celebrations and thus wont leave.

Till then expect more indo spreads on SF

I have zero loyalty to any party but it disgusts me when I look at leaders questions and the government never answer they just take pot shots at SF and answering no questions what so ever, Same with indo/sindo I stopped buying it 4/5 yrs ago it's a tabloid masquerading as a broadsheet.

I wasn't taking a pot at the war memorials, I was using the example of the indo using Gerry Adams story of Michael Collins as a treat to the editor of the Indo and how senstive they are to that exmaple, and then by that terms one could if you were inclined to take offence (not actual offence) from their add of a tour of Belgium war sites.

To get a job in the Indo you either have to be a blood relation or formerly married to Eoin Harris.

Bought the Sunday Indo the other week and never again. Half of the main paper was rubbishing Sinn Fein? That was it, every opinion and article about them was discrediting them. What a farce of a paper, the Irish Indo is a glorified tabloid

    What's wrong with that?

SF could hardly be considered a strong and noble party could they?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,583 ✭✭✭golfball37

They are only appealling to the 30% of the electorate who will never ever vote SF with their constant approach every Sunday. In that sense its a massive waste of time if they are trying to influence people not to vote for SF.

I wouldn't mind if they were attacking the SF policies and where they may lead Eire, but harping on about incidents during the NI conflict is just tiresome and churlish at this stage. And the focus of the attack is always the past deeds never the future possibilities.

Somebody needs to keep an eye on SF or we will all end up in a Goose step towards Gerrys socialist utopia

The other parties have had a go at running the country and failed miserably every single time... Fianna Fail bankrupted the country, Fianna Gael are simply clueless and arrogant and have a primary school teacher running the show, and Labour have become Fianna Gael lite, not something to be proud of!

Fianna Gael have never been re-elected into government for a second term, ever.. So, who would you like to win the next election? Fianna Fail?

Makes a change from their regular RTE bashing

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned but I assumed the recent hilarious stepping up of they're anti SF agenda was more to do with taking focus away from the water protests than anything to do with SF's poll results.

This is something I have always found odd. We are told that SF will ruin the country with their politics aimed at promises to please the simple people. Somehow that is different to every other political party.

Since when is popularity a sign of quality?

Rihanna has had 10 number 1 singles

Led Zeppelin, REM, and Depeche Mode don't have one between them.

I am waiting for the day when someone in public life with clean hands and a clean reputation lectures me about morality. I will be waiting a long time.
