We were playing Virtua cop on the Saturn over Christmas and using the Sega lightguns is soooo good. It's amazing the feel of pinpoint accuracy.

Shout out to the golden frog bonus level on house of the dead 2, talk about needing accuracy on expert :P or even flipping the coin

    1.40 mark in this video

There is a guy on YouTube "Boojakascha" that reviews all types of light guns. 200+ reviews so far.
    https://www.youtube.com/user/Boojakascha/videos

He has said the pinnacle of light gun controllers on a PC is the JB 4PLG

    Has anyone built one?

My fiancée has been girning for this for years. She lost her old Master System when she was a teenager and she was very specific about the one she had: the one with Sonic built-in. So I surprised her with this as a belated Christmas present. To say she was delighted would be a huge understatement.

There's something so timeless about Master System box art... particularly the really simple ones like that Wonderboy art...brings me right back.

Timeless? The early ones are utter garbage.

When they decided to put actual non MS paint are on the front it got a lot better. Love the white checkerboarding.

They always looked to me like a 10 year olds art project, where they cut out pictures and glued them to old school maths copybooks.

I think these early covers might have been an attempt at copying Nintendo's 'black box' artwork that went horribly wrong.

They all use sprites and are 'simplistic' in their own way, but the quality of their composition and design is fantastic. They're all really action packed.

    nes-box-art-header.jpg?fit=768%2C517&ssl=1

To me, the early Master System covers look like a pitch where someone asked an artist to try to recreate these Nintendo covers, so 'simplistic design' with a blocky/square feel to them.

Unfortunately, they gave the job to a sub par artist, who interpreted 'blocky square feel' as gridlines and 'simplistic' as something a very young child would draw.

Do any of you guys have a Sega Mark III by the way? (So the Japanese version of the Master System?) it's not something I've really seen anyone mention on here.

lads why are you intent of denying someone of their own nostalgia.
Nothing about our hobby makes rational sense so trying to rationalise it is pointless.

The guy has nostalgia for the master system art, let him have it

    Well there's nostalgia.

And there's saying this is not some original Mega Man boxart level nonsense:

    https://www.digitiser2000.com/main-page/sega-master-system-cover-artwork-was-terrible

    56044-black-belt-sega-master-system-front-cover.jpg

To be fair, the pro wrestling one is so bad that it pretty much breaks the 256 byte limit and wraps around to being amazing again.

I did love the black lines on white checkerboard of the master system games and how it contrasted with the white lines on black of the megadrive games. Really meant that there was no Wii/WiiU or XBox Series XYZ levels of confusing. And both looked cooler in a 90's way compared to the Nintendo box art of the time.

Nobody said anyone couldn't be nostalgic about them, I'm nostalgic about lots of terrible things, ie: VHS, Saved by the Bell and Freaky Foot Ice creams :D

I think the plain art boxes have a bit of charm to them. I'm not much of an 8 bit guy but it identifies them as a time period within that generation. It's like how newer PS2 games had a bigger Playstation 2 header on the boxes or how PS1 and Saturn games had ELSPA age ratings. I like when something has markings or a way to signify what part of the generation it is.

I'd be much the same too, really like the look of games on a shelf which have something different about them, especially if it's radically different like earlier consoles. I quite like library bookshelves in that way too, lots of different books of different sizes.

Such a shame PS2 era etc went with the standard DVD clamshells. Makes that part of a game collection look a lot more boring. Might as well have a shelf full of DVDs!

I thought "Freaky Foot refereed to a VHS tape called Freaky Foot and wondered why you were posting about a possible foot fetish VHS for a second. :pac:

On the plus side they will outlive any NES, SNES and even PS1 cases / boxes for years to come.

Probably the most indestructible cases ever used for gaming.

Haha! I see they actually rereleased them as a retro throwback item, but under the name 'Funny Feet' - I guess someone had misgivings about the previous name :D

I can see some hyper evolved version of a hermit crab using one as a home in the year 3 billion.

Congrats, I was in the same boat 3 weeks ago. It was just before the level 5 restrictions so they were a bit more relaxed in the place(Kilkenny). Mama and baby had to stay there on Christmas day though, which was a logistical nightmare, but we managed :)

    Well done lads.

9 weeks deep into #2 now myself. Not sure what I miss the most, over 5 hours sleep or not having nursery rhymes on the TV for 3 hours a day

So many babies around here now we could have an A&R Jr sub forum!

I'm 3 months into my 2nd. He's got as many accessories as a new console, and plenty of minigames, such as:
    - Tetris (car boot edition)
    - Tapper (baby bottle edition), and
    - Metal Gear Solid (baby edition, where you have to sneak around the house when he's napping)

The gameplay is difficulty but the trophies/achievements are good!

Yeah minature humans are great and all, but 'tis no Sony Trinitron, sailor!

Won't be able to get this up and going for a while, but I'll grab some rgb cables and see how it looks eventually. Really just got it for the sega Saturn. No pvm's or bvm's until I find one in a bin somewhere, but this'll do for now :)

Just in from the fatherland, very nice condition Darius Gaiden, maybe the cleanest disc in existence for its age. Plus now I'm up to speed on the latest deals in Aldi Munich (packing)

The best fish-based shoot-em-up ever :p It was released on the taito f3 system for the arcade, but the Saturn version is nigh on perfect. I always liked the branching levels because it adds a ton of replay value :)

Would really fancy one of the original 3-screen Darius machines (or 2-screen Darius 2). Unlikely to happen though!
