Might have been a bit eager with my listings.

I'm surprised you're not taking the €300 offered on your €330 asking price Seiko?

If my memory serves me I did accept and we interacted but buyer didn't pursue.

    I'm not unreasonable ;)

    Thanks!
I'm a sucker for a nice nato lately. 5 out of 7 autos are on nato and even one Casio!

SARB033 on bond nato has been consuming all of the wrist time lately.

I've been messing about with a NATO on my Alpha M1957.

I reckon if there was a style of watch made for a NATO, it was this.

But, they seem to sit on my wrist a bit odd. I'm about 7.5" in a watch band, and there doesn't seem to be enough strap left to wrap it properly. Plus, the buckle seems to sit way off to one side, no matter what way I string it.

    I'm not convinced.

How are you finding the alpha? Thinking of picking one up

Have a lot of my stuff on Nato too at the mo.
Not as pretty as most bracelets, but lots more comfortable!

There are two ways to wear a nato! I just learned recently enough!

Try the “other” way. Might make it sit better.

Every day is a school day!

The one thing I always disliked about the traditional NATO strap was that it has two layers between the watch and your wrist. That seems a much better way!

    I really like it.

It is not, nor will ever come closer to a Speedmaster, but for less than €200 delivered, you can't go wrong.

The movement is lovely, very smooth.

After an initial run in of about a month, I began to regulate it.

It is now down to +4 seconds per day.

The recent sterile dial versions seen to be a good step up in quality from previous ones, so that is the way to go.

I ordered from the European site, so no issues with tax or customs.

Yeah, tried that way too, but it still tends to sit a bit of, and be short.

Never been a fan of NATOs personally, hate the way they sit and feel; position of the buckle and all that.

I know they're all the rage nowadays so each to his own.

I don't like NATOs either. Its because of the weight of the bracelet seems to balance the watch. When on a NATO the case seems to slip one way or the other.

I might have the strap too loose but I like a bit of room between the watch and my wrist so it can breathe.

What also helps a lot is to oversize the width of the NATO by 1 or 2 mm. And not grossly undersize it like James Bond :p

I don't think this will help with the balance issue with the weight of a diver or sports watching being heavy on one side.

Anyone any comments on how to solve this, or do you wear the NATO tighter?

Interesting fact about Bond and the Rolex was they hadn't a "nice" watch and only thought of it when filming and the Rolex/Connery connection was formed due to crew member basically saying "here use mine" and the rest was history until Omega got in with the official branding :D

    Except that's a load of bollox :p

Rolex was always the watch Bond wore in the books. And the watch of choice for Ian Fleming. The switch in the films decades later to Omega was blasphemy! And that's coming from someone who owns an Omega and not a Rolex. Fleming would have turned in his grave. They switched, just for the bigger money that Omega offered. Like a prostitute offering to have sex with the highest bidder, no matter how old or fat they are. Ever since, the Bond films have been a travesty of ads (product placement).

Edit - damn, Fleming's personal watch was actually an Explorer, I didn't know that. The urge to get one is becoming stronger every day :o

Oh I know the book connections but I'd swear I read in some official Bond biography that they hadn't even thought of the watch and it just happened the directior or someone had one or it might not have been on screen of you get me

Who knows! Be great if someone found a linky on that!

Fleming was still alive and worked closely together with the film makers during the first few Bond films. The submariner in above picture is from Dr. No, the first Bond film (1962). Just did a bit of digging and there is no reference to Rolex at all in the first book (Casino Royale 1953), but Rolex is mentioned in his second book (Live and Let die 1954). But only once:

"He looked at the Rolex watch on his wrist"

It looks like Fleming never mentioned a diving watch or specifically mentioned a submariner in the books, so you could very well be right!

Found something RE the actual watch from Dr. No being auctioned recently
However, it almost didn't happen. On the first day of filming in Jamaica the director Terence Young realized that the prop department had forgotten to give Connery a watch. What happened next is a bit unclear. Either Young gave Connery his own Rolex Submariner with a black leather strap, producer Albert "Cubby" Broccoli gave his, or a Royal Navy diver who was part of the film crew was the source. The most unlikely story is that Connery just happened to have the right watch on him at the time

Actually it would be a cool thread maybe to split these posts into a "Watches in the Media" or something

  • Registered Users Posts: 64,826 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I'd say out of those scenarios, the most likely one is that the Royal Navy diver had the watch. Back then diving watches were mostly tools worn by professional divers. Very unlike today when 99% of them only do a bit of desk diving :p

You might have seen this retired diver with his tools, his Rolex COMEX watches :)

Went for 290. 300 would have been nice but 290 was as low as I had in mind to go.
Inc shipping they are now 410, so I think it was a fair price for an effectively new watch, with minimal wear, no more than a few weeks per year as it's in rotation, and came with 3 nice brand new nato picked specifically to suit it(new versions of what I wore it on) , not just the ugly old worn spares in the bottom of the drawer.

    Don't tease us! :p

How much did it sell for?

And a general bit of advice - don't withdraw an ad on adverts if you have actually sold the item. Years on and some people will reply to some other new ad you have asking if you still have xxxx item for sale :)
