Is it only Pros that are allowed on the Podium? AG'ers finished 2 and 4, but the podium went to 1st, 3rd and 5th.

Mighty effort by BMC, he started in a different wave and finished 2nd by 15 seconds. Would have been a great race to watch if they knew there was only 15sec between the two of them. Looking at the splits BMC was closing fast on him at the end. Imagine if he could see him....
After swim.... Collins 5 mins ahead
After bike... Collins 4 mins ahead
13.3k of run... Collins 3.5 mins ahead
18.8k of run... Collins 2.5 mins ahead
20.5k of run... Collins 1 min ahead
    Finish...Collins 15 sec ahead

only pro's can take the prize money, seem to remember reading about a race where an ag'er won the race but couldn't take the prize as they weren't pro

    15 secs ..!! I'd say he's gutted .. Don't understand why he can't take his place on the podium .. 2nd is 2nd ..

I saw an interview TI did with BMC after he had been told he was 9 secs off the lead and admitted he'd be sickened as had he known he'd have found 9 secs.

He looked shook at the end though but what a performance. The man is a machine. I can't wait to see how Kona goes will the heat be the achillies heel no doubting his ability either way.

Also I know technically he's an amateur but is he not sponsored by numerous organisations. I assume they cover his 9-5 wage or does he hold down a 9-5 also? Perhaps the coaching gig is the income.

In some ways this is a silly rule in other ways it isnt . In this case its unfortunate bmc did all the work himself on the bike ( at the same time got more support in the swim).
but there is cases where it could be the other way round - especially in female races where there is usually loads of guys around.

wave starts are diffuclt as differetn race dynamics come to different results, besides drafting usually more enforced in pro race , and more drug testing in pro races.

So this wknd was my first Ironman event and can't really see what all the hype is about re the Ironman experience. Personally I found some locally ran events just as good if not better in some instances. Anyways...

All in all, had a good day, was aiming for a sub 5:15 and just missed a sub 5 by a few seconds! Didn't get stung in the water thou heard a few who did. Bike was testing at the start with all those speed ramps, mini roundabouts and man holes. Also testing again once the rain/mist started as road certainly got slippy and saw a few who had offs which did make me back off slightly and/or come off the bars for some corners. Run was all good bar a garda escort that decided to momentarily block the road! That pizza and beer certainly was most welcome at the finish. Inhaled them.

My last rant point, collecting the bags and bikes afterwards was sheer chaos!

I know it can be difficult to put on any race in Dublin, due to the various councils etc., but the logistics/split transition were a killer for this one.
Coupled with the bag collection farce - made for a poor overall impression.

Yes, bag collection was a joke. Made worse by the inflated ego a high viz can give some people

As far as race quality goes, I can't judge, being a 'veteran' of less than ten events, but I could find little fault with it.
Very difficult to do any kind of business in Ireland with out the commitay having to get their two cents in.
Did anyone spot any businesses suffering in the city centre on Sunday morning?
The late confirmation also put a bit of a dampener on the event with numbers down on last year.
I may be slaughtered for this but it ticked the boxes as far as what I wanted for my first stab at this distance.
(For the record, it won't be one-and-done) Was it worth nearly €300 though, no.

Personally, everything went to plan. Half decent swim for a self confessed slowcoach, good bike and better than expected run for a sub 5:45 finish. I've a lot of improving to do but I've no bother putting the hours in

I'd give he race a big thumbs up. If we ignore the issue on the swim bag being picked up everything else was top notch. The amount of marahalls was massive.

There is not that many races in Ireland with closed roads and none at this distance that I am aware of. That is a big draw for me.

It's pricey but I think u can see were a lot of the money goes. Most marahalls were from a private company and I believe road closures aren't cheap.

Appeared to be very well organised from what I seen.

Bike was twisty and roads a bit slippy once the rain hit but that is just the Irish weather. I like the bike course.

Also nice to get a flat run and 3 laps is good also.

The bag issue should be easy to resolve

I'd put it down for next year on my calendar next year if I decide I will do some races after nice!!!

Bag collection was a bit of a mess alright, but thought they dealt with it as best they could on the day by filtering people through the barriers, and the poor bastards who got stuck manning the truck did well given the situation. I thought every other aspect was perfectly organised, and nice to race on closed roads, hope the various residents weren't too put out and won't kick up if they decide to make it a regular feature. Seemed to be a lot of support out around the course from locals, but I did also notice a lot of traffic stuck in housing estates towards the end of the bike leg. Could say people should have known about the race and presumably there was some sort of advance notice, but nonetheless it obviously put a lot of people out so no harm appreciating that given the difficulties getting road closures.

Even though numbers were presumably down due to the late opening I'd imagine they made a few quid out of it, so hopefully it'll be back.

Good day out, swim was well managed, found the bike course harder than last year, really didn't like the road surface but run was great, really like the loops - especially the last one! Bag debacle was just that, disappointing as last year was seamless. Had no problem with transitions, found the bike rack easy enough. Marshalls and fuel stations everywhere on the day which was super, topped by pizza at the end. Thought last year's finish stretch was better as it was lined on both sides with people. Hopefully they pull the finger out early on next year, was great to see the overseas interest again, still reckon Dublin IM would be a huge draw if they give people enough time. Well done to everyone who took part and who volunteered - thanks

Just to add a bit of balance. If you have a bike issue your more or less fcuked. I had a puncture on tubulars and Joey had a stem issue. We were both left on the side of the road shivering with a 5k walk to get to a lift. Some local came out of his house and gave me a fleece and a cup of tea, let me use him phone to ring the wife. Wheelworks had no help for someone on tubular tyres , no ****ty spare wheels just to get you going again. Then to just leave you there is a load of b....x. What if we had of been from abroad and had to walk to god knows where and no one to ring. When I went to collect my red bag later on which I obviously never touched it wasn't on my hook. Eventually found it about a 100 places down the rack. Was probably never going to be my day but Mechanical Support and athlete support is crap on the bike and you wont find out until its too late.

how would you do it differently ?
i thought having registration and bag drop at T1 was a good improvement on last year.

i guess the issue with the bags was that they opened transiton to late . if they open at 1 this would not happen .
yes this would be an inconvinince for a few participants but i guess once you take at very least 5 hours to get to t2 , if t2 is slower by 1or 2 min it would not matter much . Galway handled that well.

i think one very cheap way to make the race better would be to have an oven to serve the pizza warm.

I have to agree with rooneyjm. We were left on the side of the road and told we could wait around 2hours to be picked up or walk through Dublin city in our Trisuits to transition. I was lucky that my mam lives up the road and was able to come down and pick me up but other than that I would have been left on the side of the road in my bare feet and tri suit for a few hours. The mechanic van took our bikes but there was 3 people in it with one of them driving and being the mechanic. Could have made more sense to have it pick people up and drop them somewhere along with their bike. I wasn't told where my bike would end up or when and after the already long wait to get into transition I had another wait on my bike while no one seemed to know where it was or where it would be dropped off.

I would recommend to bring a spare tubular or the very least sealant.

at the same time send them an email and suggest the bike support shoult have those saftey blankets with them so athletes can stay warm .

I have to take responsibility for my decisions and probably wouldn't do another half on tubulars, too much time and effort not to at least finish the race. Lesson learned

Continential Ims have neutral bike support and get you moving - wheels the lot. but hey that costs money.

My first ever triathlon and i thought it was a well organised event with great atmosphere in the park. aid stations very good , no problems at transitions and stewards all along route

It was my first triathlon and I found it very well organised. If anybody would like to swap a finishers t-shirt I asked for XL and they gave me L by mistake thanks.

Find a location with single transition and one that will embrace events such as this. Much bigger IM races (Zurich, ZA, from personal experience....) can easily manage single transition.
Anyone with experience of trying to organize an event across multiple Dublin councils will know, that Dublin does not fully embrace these events.
Why not look to move it to Bray/Greystones or similar - IM "Barcelona" is in Calella, 50km or so, from the city.
