Only just seen this in next week's TV Now, but looks like TV3 will be adding a news edition for 8pm across the week. This has been done very quietly. No mention on any site or press release. Possibly to trial it out at this time.

Just heard this mentioned on Matt Cooper 's show

Yep they've officially announced it through Twitter and press releases today. I got there early though yesterday ;)

Here now, I don't think they're proposing to show Topless Darts or employ a news bunny? (If they do, then they're in trouble).

The new Irish programming block from 5:30pm-8:30pm is a welcome development even if it is all studio based.

Again no mention of TV3 HD.

They did mention during the six nations that the world cup will be on, on tv3 HD if memory serves me correctly.

Add in red rock and it's 5.30-9 two days a week.

Question will big audiences follow? I can't see the block working for them The 7 O'clock show isn't retaining audiences.

TV3 would be better to let TSOCS go on hatatus for 2 weeks and produce a game show with King and blind date with Kennedy and drop them from TSCOCS during the run of both shows. Still studio based.

Im no major fan of TV3, but in fairness to them, when it was a clone of ITV, people were complaining about lack of Irish/Original content etc and now that they are making an effort at more home produced programming, people are still complaining ! Whether a programme is good or bad is a personal choice, some people think Red Rock is fantastic, others think its drivel, but its Irish, giving chances to Irish actors etc.And the same goes for the programmes that will go out in this new line up for 5.30pm to 8.30pm. We are a great nation of knockers.

I have constantly stated that It's great to see Red Rock, not a huge fan either but it is a good soap and quite watchable, like most soaps the script can be a bit overly melo-dramatic and some of the acting can be awful at times. But it is better than Emmers & EastEnders IMO.

TV3 need to attract an audience, I don't see the News at 8 achieving an audience, it will be interesting to see how it goes, if you hear nothing its not gone well, if you hear about audience figures you can be guaranteed its doing the as good as The 5:30. But that's still a small audience.

TV3 need a good mix of programming between 6pm and 11pm. They just don't have a good mix of programming weather its Irish, British or American.

This idea of having 50% programming coming from Ireland is unrealistic. They'd be better off focusing on 50% quality programming in Prime Time than 50% programming across the day, that's far more realistic. And you'd be able to repeat some of that programming, TV3 has very little repeatable programming.

Instead TV3 are opting for a cheap strip schedule because they don't have the experience of putting a mixed genre channel together.

    Quality over quantity.

I'd rather see an third episode of Red Rock than TSOCS.

The same goes for UTV Ireland if they need a good mixed of American and Irish programming along with their ITV shows.

For a small country we have way too much news and current affair shows on tv. This 8pm news will not attract many viewers but its cheap to do.

I don't think it would be too much to ask for a decent alternative to RTÉ News.

It will be hard for the 8 o clock news to gain traction. It won't be on every evening at 8 as there will be soccer on some Tuesday's and the odd Thursday's when ever tv3 randomly move it from 3e

Moves from 3e when they can finish around 8:30 on Thursday
    TSOCS has the same problem.

Prob should consider a Q&A type show with Collette Fitzpatrick, currently the only TV3 presenter capable of taking over from VB.

Only four Thursday's left where football can be potentially be moved from 3e to TV3. But in reality there won't be any more moves in the Europa League, apart from the final, as there are no British teams left. The final will probably on TV3, but thats a one off, and they lose the rights to the Europa League after that.

    Frampton Fight

    Peak on UTV 768,000
    Peak on ITV 1.9m
Not sure if ITV includes STV

I'm not sure what that has to do with TV3 though.

Only one more series and a Christmas special of Downton Abbey left, as the axe fell on the show yesterday. I'd say TV3 will be disappointed, they had exclusive rights to any more series that were being made.
They'll need to schedule this on the Sunday night, and not like last few years where it's the Wednesday after it. Unknown though whether ITV has exclusive broadcast rights, and TV3 were unable to show it until after they broadcast it, or whether Xtra Factor took precedence (Although unlikely, as they also waited till the day after for the Christmas specials)

Piece in the Irish Times today saying that, following Ireland's recent success, TV3 is expected to net between €5 million and €6 million in total ad sales from the Rugby World Cup.

It also says that they've got a sponsor for its coverage for a substantial six-figure sum.

the last piece is a bit wrong.. the ITV channel no longer available here... surely they should have put no longer available on UPC etc. sloppy journalisim from the IT but probably just taking the spin from TV3 and putting it down as gospel..

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,587 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They are Dublin based and UPC is still absolutely dominant in Dublin in a way that its not in the rest of the country. I'd imagine that's where it comes from.

It will also be how TV3 put it. Anyway TV3 won't care as long as it's signing contracts and getting paid.

IT (and in truth most newspapers ) will print almost any press release they receive word for word once its from a reputable PR agency.

I read that article from the IT. Many people living in Ireland are going to be thinking rather differently when reading that article when they have Freesat combined with Saorview to get ITV HD.

The viewing figures for this tournament will be key as to how successful on TV3. Depending on the amount of money that TV3 have spent on advertising; will a exodus of viewers to ITV HD will be big enough to make a loss on TV3's advertising revenue. They are many factors that are going to be there for both broadcasters to consider for their viewers.

There is a dead cert for both of them regarding HD albeit in different distribution methods.

ITV HD have this service available on all of the major services in the UK and in the ROI via Freesat/FTA Satellite. TV3 have a HD channel but on Pay TV only namely Sky & UPC.

Regarding coverage and analysts ITV HD have Irish people like Brian O'Driscoll and Craig Doyle. But other people included Johnny Wilkinson, Sir Clive Woodward and Laurence Dallaglio. TV3 have Keith Wood, Peter Stringer and Stuart Barnes for their analysts team.

The quality of the tournaments have to be determined by the viewer in order to see which has the best coverage.

IT on back of this article will still be praising TV3's ass once this tournament is finished.

Also I imagine a lot of Irish fans will be heading to England for the tournament since is it so close this time round.
