MkII > MkI > MkV imo

The rest are irrelevant. That being said the MkVII has grown on me a bit lately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,618 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I really like the MKIV TBH. I never really liked the rest.

Is the MkV any good? I saw quite a few people putting them down. I guess it had a lot to live up to after the MkIV.

For me it would be MkVI as my favourite then MkV that's out of the newer models. Then MkII out of the early models. MkVII hasn't really grown on me although I don't dislike it either.

Least favourite are the mk3 and mk6.

MKIV for me simply because the TDi and the 1.8T were magnificent engines.

It also had unheard of interior 'quality', lots of nice soft plastics. They were very desirable back in the late 90s/early 00s

I'm sorry but a selection of clattery petrol and diesel 4 pots could hardly be described as "magnificent":rolleyes:

Very ordinary engines in a very ordinary car!!!

I disagree, I think they came together very well in the MKIV. It was up against some serious shyte and was leagues ahead of the competition when it came out. Even the lowly 1.4's at least had a decent interior.

The TDI came in many different variances with something to suit nearly everyone. The 1.8T is that customizable that it is the "go-to" engine for any VAG owner looking to do a transplant. There aren't too many 1800cc engines running in excess of 300bhp as much as there are the 1.8T.

    Both engines are excellent./

The might be fine or even good (but IMO there were other engines around at the time that were just as good and better in ordinary cars too) but magnificent engines are something like a Lamborghini V12

In the context of what we were talking about I think they were great/magnificent engines. I can't think of anything comparable in 1998 for the diesel and 1999 for the 1.8T tbh in that class other than K-series or VTEC engines which were both petrol and not turbo charged.

It's the mk4 and 5 for me, the 7 is v bad looking imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,013 ✭✭✭davycc

mk1 and 2 for me in that order:D

went a bit bland random euroboxes after that. could be any other vag car if you squint a little imho:(

The m5 GTI would be widely regarded as the best of the modern variants as it brought the GTI name back to its original glory, the mk4 GTI is one of the worst GTI's ever unless you are looking at petrol Anniversary models, with 180 bhp and decent brakes, seats etc and a bespoke feel over the the rest of the fleet, the regular MK4 gti wasn't distinguishable visually from any other highline TDI or petrol model.

The 1.8T is a good solid engine,i wouldn't describe it as magnificent in anyway but in terms of a turbo petrol 4 pot in the mk4 chassis at the turn of the 00's it was a class leader, here was a good solid (relatively) high powered engine previously only seen in the A4 and passat now in a hatchback.......... but....... at the that time Audi were selling S3's and slightly later TTs with the same 1.8T only with more power, better handling etc, then Seat did something similar with the Cupra R, all these cars hinted at what the mk4 GTI could have been but never was. VW needed to up their game with the MK5 and they did.

Still though the MK4 would be one of my favourite golfs but only with 4wd and a VR engine of some description, the VR is closer to being a magnificent engine than the 1.8T for me, who said you couldn't design a narrow angled v to fit the wrong way inside a hatchback MK3 golf, and then marry it to 4wd in the MK4 all the while making sure the are bulletproof and one of the best sounding V6 engines of all time.

Bulletproof? Most require a new chain, a new chain shouldn't be required.

Stop with the Roman numerals! I can read them but always have to look twice

I was referring more to the 24v vr in the when I said bulletproof, never heard of many of them needing chains and I owned a highly modified one myself.

Add the mk3 and mk2 to that list and I'd agree.
Don't like the newer models at all.

I was talking purely in terms of look.
In terms of engines, I'd take the 1.6d block from the mark2 (afair), the 1.9tdi from the earlier mark4, or the vr6 from the mark3/4

A Mk2 GTI or Mk5 GTI or R32 are the only one's I like. And the Mk5 would have to be a late run well specced one.

Mk5 R32's don't do anything for me at all, VW didn't do enough to set them apart, the MK4 R32 is different ball game however. When it first appeared it was lunacy a hot hatch with a 3.2 V6, 4wd, dual clutch automatic gearbox, indepedent rear suspension etc, probably one of the few modern VW's that will become a future classic, all in my own opinion of course.

Oh, and if I see another white Mk7 I'm gonna poke my eyes out. White VAG hatchbacks have become the new silver Jap mobiles (sorry MuppetCheck :( ).

Around hear most of the 131/132/141/142 white golfs, passats and octavias have tow bars and are driven by people who like to go caravaning ALOT!

The only reason I haven't bought one is my aversion to paying top CC tax on a 3.2 v6.
One of those cars that, if it was on vintage tax (or even 700 euro 2.0l tax) I'd have in a heartbeat.

I love the mark4 design tbh, (I had a massive "veedub" phase when I was younger), and would love to have another .

"Oh, that's an actual GTI? I thought it was a TDI.". Nearly torched the thing.

To be fair, unless one is a VAG anorak, one Golf pretty much looks the same as another and that's always been the case. It has little to do with the chav brigade. I've had questions like that put to me a thousand times right back since I had the MKV GTI (when they were still relatively uncommon and they hadn't yet fallen into the boy racer brigade). I still get asked what the MK7 is like on diesel. Sometimes I just say "ah, not bad..." just to avoid explaining it all again lol

Yes, but when someone know's what a GTI is, and still assumes going by the averages that it's a TDI dressed as a GTI, that's when it gets ridiculous.

It's like the assumption that any e60 (even with the m5 side skirts, quad exhausts, and air intakes on the side above the indicators) is a tarted up 520d.
The sad part is, a quick check on mywheels or similar normally proves that assumption to be correct.

Or again, the amount of RS4 TDIs versus real RS4's on the road. Certainly would be a factor in my decisioning not to buy a real RS4 if I was considering one.
