nice size head on him, good size for a 10 month old pup, i have one same age not sure if he is as big as him, nice heavy markings on him, he seems well cared for anyway but pity about the short tail

best of luck with him anyway

He is quite large. will grow a bit more. yes the tail is only about 2 inches long. it will look a bit better as the hair gets longer on it.

Nice looking dog, pity about his tail, but I'm sure it won't affect his hunting ability.

Hope picture loaded. If it has u will see the difference between old style springer compared to new smaller type

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 Jimbob79

The old style is 5 year old. Very soft dog but what a great dog to shoot over. Retrieves as good as a Labrador. The small type is only year old. I got her yesterday so a project for the summer but showing good signs.

Some differance there i have the same here.I'm not a fan of the light boned springers they look like cat's when there wet. So lad's stop breeding light to light and we may get a better looking springer with good bones.

Thanks lads. I always liked the bigger chunkier springers. Tbh I only took the small dog as a favour to a mate. He was having dominance issues with her and his Alsatian, it was going to end in a serious casualty. Hopefully she works out. She is showing good potential. Only will time will tell but always enjoy starting a new dog.

I do like the bigger dog,not too gone on the really small type, just love the white makes the dog look flashy..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

I don't agree at all I think the Heavy marks spaniels are nicer more flashy , bigger stronger and better in cover , badger court are well regarded as the best spaniels ever breed in England , and they were all heavy marked dogs .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭Beretta man

Every one to there own bud,if we all liked the same thing it would be a sad world..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

Of course , the point I'm making was that big spaniels don't come all white only small bits of things , because that's breed into them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭Beretta man

Do you think the spaniel has got more brains from selective breeding like easer to train...I've seen a few trialling dogs and they could nearly talk to you..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

Yes you have to be selective in ur breeding , but trailing has ruined springer spaniels , this is not my opinion this it's widely thought of but the springer community .

What gud is a dog talking to u when they can nearly do the job there ment to do . I've not seen a trailing spaniel in a long time that is able for a full days hunting , there fast and stylish in 20 min bursts and wrecked after 2 hours .

Why don't all the lads that have the big springers try to get the numbers back up
All I see is people looking for the old type springer, there is demand so why isn't there pups out there....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

Because lads that are breeding them trying to get size back into the breed are finding that dogs are coming big and bitches are coming small trail types .

And anyone that gets a gud strong big bitch is keeping them .

That along with the fact that when people had money they all thought they were dog breeders , spaniels been the popular breed , gud gun dogs were breed with poor bitches and pups sold , essentially breeding the hunt and size out of them as well .

Feild trails champions dogs were been breed with house hold pets and then sold as pups from trailing back rounds .

The trailing community isn't all to blame but a big part !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭Beretta man

I've seen a few bitches that are very small, pitty there wasn't a middle ground..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

I've bought 4 bitches in the last. 5 years and there not worth a f! I give them away after .

Gary007 on ere breed my dog to his bitch , a proven woodcock. , hard bitch , she had 2 big strong bitch pups so time will tell there only a week old .

Can't wait to see the out come

The best springers iv seen have no papers.lads keeping lines going for years and only breeding when they need pups for them self's.That been said not all trail dogs are ****.how many trial dogs dont make the grade and end up as great shooting dogs.i dont agree with line breeding though thats what causes most of the probs.some bitches don't come into heat until their nearly 3 years of age with that small litters and most of the pups dieing.

I am trying to my bit to keep the true springer alive. I am only breeding from old style dog's as can be seen from my pic's above. I also have 2 big bitch pup's i'll put up some pic's of them tomorrow. Now back to them dog's they use for trialing and their breeding. Well it's a well known fact. That setter's were crossed with them to give the shower old stile dog's more speed. And the good old collie to give them inteligens. so there not 100 persent springer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

Hear say , and rumour , can't see the setter being breed into them cause that brings size and there going opposite way . Collie was ment to be put into several breeds 100 years ago .

It's been discussed a load of time on forum and end up a **** fest of posts .

Put up few more pic when ever ya get a chance would be great to see them
