You are welcome. It is a fairly common species - you can see a map of its Irish distribution here:

Thanks for that V_Moth - seems like none of these moths recorded in my county previously - probably not many moth enthusiasts in these parts (Longford) or else nobody been recording them !

Adding quite a few new species to my garden records so far this year (most recently Brown Rustic and Clay Triple-lines), anyone else finding this?

Haven't had any Brown Rustics in the garden and only one CTL, but lots more May Highflyers & Least Black Arches than previous years. In general I think there are more moths around, possibly due to the mild winter.

    From last night:

    Flame Carpet (1)
    Common M Carpet (1)
    Heart & Dart (1)
    Snout (1)
    May Highflyer (1)
    Pug spec. (1)
    Garden Carpet (1)

Lots of moths on Friday night. Most plentifull were ermines with 25 whites and 15 buffs. One new for the garden .A Silver Barred. Seems to be small compared to the ones found in Glengarriff, might be migratory one.

That's because it's a Barred Yellow, my mistake!

Yep, that's it all right ! Looked up Clouded Border and fits the moth I seen earlier. Many thanks splish !
I have the Moth ID book reference book (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) on order so hopefully will be able to do the ID bit soon, just seems to be so many moth species about, and many of them day fliers ! Or is it just that most of them only take to the wing in daylight if disturbed ?

I'm no expert and only googling but it looks more like a sallow kitten on account of its dark regular front wingbar and irregular less prominent rear wingbar. The poplar kitten is less common and would have a more prominent black outline at the rear of the wingbar.

+1 for Sallow Kitten (the other species are very rare but always good to check!).

Came across this small moth today on grasses/ vegetation near pond edge
Anyone have an ID for it ?
    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,319 ✭✭✭Half-cocked

Brown China-mark. Disturbed during daylight hours in pond-side vegetation is very typical for sighting this species.

I just saw a Hummingbird hawk-moth in my garden this evening.Amazing looking creatures!:)
This was the first one I've seen in several years.
How common are they becoming,or have I just been extremely lucky to see them?

A very nice find! They are annual migrants in variable numbers to Ireland from southern Europe. July and August are the best months to find them here.
