I got very drunk & very down after I posted Köln was off the cards so much so the missus became a bit concerned I was heading for a dark place again!! She suggested I go see her physio that he had worked wonders on her, nothing to lose I thought but he’ll only tell me what I know already.

Go see her man, goes over me with a fine tooth comb, very detailed look at me leaving me thinking at one stage was he going to break out the rubber gloves to check it was that intense. In his broken English he tells me my Achilles is fine but my left calf resembles a “bag of rocks” in his words. Cue three rather intense sessions of dry needling over 7-8 days and the pain went.

Since I last posted i’ve ran weeks of 44, 60, 56 and this week 56 with no pain whatsoever. Reason I didn’t post or update is I was afraid I was going to relapse and didn’t want to look foolish(I am anyway) by not heeding my own advice.

Those weeks of running were back to what Luke thought me doing long runs of 2x18, 2x20 miles, a good steady run and MP intervals of 15mins during a MLR. I don’t know what to expect in Köln but i’m running it and going to enjoy the experience, I may PB I may not, I don’t care to be honest just happy to be running it.

    Edit: As is pacing DCM.

Excellent stuff! I was worried when you weren't posting that the rehab wasn't going well. Delighted you're back in the mix for Köln, albeit with different expectations.

So hang on, have you not missed any weeks at all then? Great to hear you’re in normal shape again, apparently?

I missed 10 days straight altogether D with the calf, funny thing is i’m not fully sure what shape i’m in as this is first marathon i’ll do without at least a 10 mile race as warm up. Not fully sure what MP is either. Not putting pressure on myself for this one, if I PB so be it, if I don’t I’ll still enjoy the experience.

Not as fast as yours unfortunately!!! About 7.20min/miles give or take, they felt comfortable but not sure about 26.2 mile comfortable.

Sure it's a free roll isn't it? Worst case scenario you get a good LR workout in, another shiny medal for your collection and a few Weissbier :)

    Koln Training Review:

730 miles all told prior to this week in the legs over the 18 weeks of this Marathon cycle, 150 or so down on what i had planned but i missed 3 weeks of training in total with the calf issue and days where kids took precedence(they always do) on top of a wife that works long hours from time to time and who has become very active again herself in the last few months.

My long runs over the cycle were as follows:

    4x20 miles
    4x18 miles
    2x16 miles

I also introduced a midweek MLR following P&D and have ran 12 plus of these of at least 10 miles working up to 14 max. Training in the Dutch summer was not kind to me, serious sweat loss on a lot of runs that looking back had me spent after the run in truth, the humidity more than the heat being my enemy. I listened to some smart advice given by shotgunmcos regarding drinking electrolytes prior to runs and this helped me no end, still huge sweat loss but no feeling of exhaustion at the end of the run. I ran my last long run of 18 miles last Saturday in mild conditions, the last 8@MP(7.15min/mile) and was so comfortable, i get a mild morning like that i'll be over the moon.

I will weigh my heaviest heading to Koln compared to my other marathon cycles, tipping the scales at 13st currently, was 12.5st max going to Rotterdam and Barcelona. Nothing i can do at this point about that though, it is what it is, and something i will address heading into the winter.

My diet has been good, plenty of fish, salads and carbs eaten, i'm not a big takeaway man, i prefer a good home cooked meal rather than something cooked in oil or MSG's. I am partial to a Fries Mexicana though. The weight has come from lack of giving the IPA's up, unlike my other marathon cycles, where i lived like a monk and gave the drink up for the duration of training, i have chosen to keep drinking this cycle:o:o:o. The last 6 weeks though i have only had alcohol twice.

Regarding race prep, i have ran no warm up races so am going to Koln blind basically on where i am regards fitness or correct MP. I know i am fit but how fit am i?? I'll see in 10 days time i suppose.

    Koln Goal:

I normally set x,y and z time goals prior to running a marathon, not going doing that this time. One goal and that is to beat 3.20.32, be it by a second or few minutes i don't care. If i run a PB i will be delighted, most relaxed i have felt prior to running a marathon, no panic or worries at this point and don't envisage that changing. Bib No 671 if any of ye are interested following on the tracker.

If anyone here knows someone who for whatever reason has to back out of the half marathon, please give me a shout, I need their bib to run it as it has sold out. Full price given. I know the names cant be changed but it at least allows me to participate. I can time myself.
