i never encountered such a shower in the last 45 years..i am involved in fishing, shooting and gaa, but the most annoyed people are definitely the pike people(strangers)!

Just because pike anglers are standing up to authorities to defend their sport ?.

this is a bad comparision-and not intended to cause offence..pike are like rats-they will never be exterminated from any lake once put in..there is no fear of that!

I'm sorry but that is offensive, unnecessary, biased, disproportionate, and unbecoming of you.
I'm out of this discussion until an honest level debate can be carried out. I fish for trout, pike, bass, carp, you name it, and I would never be so blatantly biased towards or against any species we are blessed to have in this country.

Yes it is a bad comparison, A really bad comparison!. Pike are nothing like rats.

Rats have a rapid reproduction rate, and a high survival rate. While pike do not.

Rats cause and spread disease, while pike clean up diseased and dying fish hence stopping the spread of disease.

Rats are vermin and are generally regarded as a pest to society. While pike are a protected species, and considered to be highly beneficial and profitable to society!.

No, pike will not be eradicated, that does not make it ecceptable to cull them on loughs mask, Corrib and conn. In the case of lough ree surveys, IFI should hold off until the summer months when most species of fish have finished spawning and there is better potential for multi species catch efficiency. Which seems to be the target everywhere else outside of Ireland?

After a survey like this, there are a large number of samples to be analysed - scales and otoliths for ageing, stomach contents for analysis, genetic samples for typing and analysis. Some of these take a long time to do, for example otolith bones require a lot of work just to get to the stage of looking at growth rings under a microscope, and genetic samples are sent to a specialist lab for analysis, which takes a long time to come back. A lot of the samples will be frozen and only analysed over the winter months, when fieldwork is finished. There might be a summary report within a few months, but the full report would not be available for a long time.

Yes Dan, but at this early stage before the full facts and names are released it wouldn't be wise to say who the guys are but they are from my county, County Armagh. We have heard this morning that one of the guys has sadly died.

Very very sad, fishing can be tragic at times...

They were pikers from Portadown. I have been given the names. Really sad. A mate and myself had a scary time out from Portrunny Bay about 40 years ago when a wind suddenly came up . We had a 17 foot lake boat but we were under oars. Unfortunately these 3 guys were in a 12 ft flat bottom boat.

Yes it is very very sad, something that cuts into all anglers. My they rest in peace.

very sad, im sure all our thoughts are with the family and friends.Heard the older guys around saying how quick it can blow up on Ree but used to take it with a pinch of salt until one September evening I was out with a friend it went from flat calm to white topped 6ft waves in about a minute and a half never experienced anything like it before or since
