simple way to cut welfare bill

Unemployment benefit should be payed as normal to help an unemployed person back to work.
A person on benefit should not have to jump through hoops but should be offered friendly helpful support to get back into employment.

People who are healthy and do not qualify for unemployment benefit and require unemployment assistance should be treated very differently.
These people should get a debit card that can not be used for the purchase of alcoholic drinks or tobacco products along with a list of other non essential luxury items.

We need the non working leeching scum in this country to drink, smoke and take as many drugs as they can so they die off younger than the decent folk.

How would any of this cut the 'welfare bill', as the OP has put it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,876 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

An even simpler way is to do what has been done in the last few years, not have any increases in the rates like in pensions or reduce some of them like in Child Benefit. That way eventhough the number of recipients goes up because of the very rapid increase in population here the actual amount of money being paid out stays much the same. It is simply a readjustment from the tiger years the same as workers have had to face. In fact in the Charlie McCreevy era pensioners got increases way above other sections of society.

Welfare is more than just unemployment payments.

OP if you were in power you would just create further unemployment, if swa people can't buy booze or tobacco, people working in the shops, off licenses and supermarkets would loose their jobs because of a drop in custom.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Plus the Government wouldn't get half their money back in taxes.

They would still spend the money.
Loss of jobs in alcohol retail could be a gain for the fruit and vegetable seller.

So you're going to implement a new debit card system, and get every shop in the land to cooperate by categorising their wares into luxuries and essentials, to save money how? They're still getting the money, you just think that your almighty Taxpayer status gives you the right to decide what they spend it on? Right...!

Can't turnips be used as a substitute for potatoes to brew poitin?

TD's would really need to reflect on this anomoly before passing this otherwise ingenius legislation.

If they want to smoke and drink let them do so with their OWN money.

Perhaps people should only be able to buy potatoes and turnip if they present an up to date pay slip?

I'd hate to see the OP's idea fail.

That's called your money; once the money is given to you then it's yours when it comes to Jobseekers allowance/benefit in Ireland.

If you want to dictate what it can and cannot be spent on, then start up your own, private jobseekers and you can make sure the money is only spent on what you deem it should be spent on.

Invent a scheme where lazy dolians can do an honest days work and still get their scratcher, then they can complain how they are being exploited......
Make up a catchy name like jobs bridge and hunt them out of their council houses

but it is their own, a fraction of what they have paid in taxex both direct and indirect for years, dont worry mate your turn will come, unless you are an unsackable civil servent, but then karma is a bitch.

Yep, as you've been told already, stay in school because you've a lot to learn......

If we want to save €2 billion PA just cut all welfare by 10%, including pensions etc.

We would still be way above 2005 levels and I don't remember anyone on welfare starving in 2005.

No it's not a new or particularly original idea the United States have food stamps for example.
What would be new is a government with the vision to do it.

Its simple, - we pay them just enough that most of them won't rob and murder us to take the stuff we earned.

Op, id love to implement your plan tomorrow, but imagine what it'd do to crime rates.
