    Matthew-Thomas-300x201.jpg

New CEO for Shannon Group (Limerick Post)

The Board of the Shannon Group plc has today announced the appointment of Matthew Thomas as the company’s new Chief Executive.

With 20 years’ experience in the industry, Matthew (43) joins the Shannon Group from the Vantage Airport Group, where he is currently Chief Commercial Officer.

Vantage is a leading global operator, developer and investor in airports, based in Vancouver, Canada, created by the multi-award winning Vancouver Airport Authority. Matthew, who has worked with the Vantage Airport Group since 2008, has been involved in the majority of Vantage’s thirty airport projects across four continents, including nineteen significant airport transitions.

As Chief Commercial Officer, Matthew has been responsible for leading the implementation of the Group’s business development strategy. Most recently in New York, where he played a leading role in winning the $4 billion redevelopment contract of the Central Terminal at La Guardia Airport, the largest public-private-partnership in the United States. Matthew was also at the forefront of negotiations at other major US airports including JFK, Chicago and Denver as well as in the Bahamas.

Matthew also has responsibility for the development of Vantage’s existing portfolio of eight airports across four countries, and was a Board member of Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, Bahamas and John C. Munro Airport in Hamilton, Toronto.

In addition, from 2010-2014, Matthew was based in England initially as the Chief Commercial Officer of Peel Airports and subsequently as CEO (comprising Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Doncaster Robin Hood Airport and Durham Tees Valley Airport) following its acquisition by Vantage.

As CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, he led a number of key transformational projects, including a major terminal redevelopment, attracting new airlines and routes and the creation of an award-winning people development strategy. These initiatives helped restore passenger growth and resulted in Liverpool becoming the most efficient as well as the best performing airport operation in the UK.

Rose Hynes, Chairman of Shannon Group, said “I am delighted to announce Matthew’s appointment as the new CEO of Shannon Group plc. He brings to the role a deep knowledge of the aviation industry combined with significant commercial experience. He combines pragmatic, effective management with strategic purpose and has an excellent track record of success. We are very fortunate to have secured an executive of Matthew’s ability and proven international experience to drive our strategic agenda, not just for the benefit of Shannon Group, but for the benefit of the Irish economy as a whole.”

Matthew Thomas said: “I’m excited to be coming to Shannon and Ireland at this time, and to have this opportunity to share my diverse experience with the Shannon Group. Shannon has an iconic place in aviation history. It is the gateway to The Wild Atlantic Way, and I know that it is very important to both the regional and national economy. I’m looking forward to working with my new colleagues in Shannon, the Board of Directors and all of the stakeholders to ensure the Group grows and makes the impact the West of Ireland deserves.”

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, welcomed the appointment of Mr Thomas as Shannon Group’s new CEO. “Matthew Thomas takes over the reins at a very important time for the Group. Shannon Airport has seen a welcome turnaround over the past three years with passenger numbers up by over 22%. There are opportunities and challenges to grow the airport further in the years ahead and Mr Thomas brings the experience and expertise to guide it successfully in that direction. His commercial experience will also assist in realising the vision for the Group’s property portfolio and the development and expansion of an international aviation services centre in and around the Airport,” he said.

Matthew, who is from Manchester, England, takes up the position of Chief Executive of the Shannon Group in June 2016. His appointment is for a five year term. Matthew and his wife Nancy both have strong connections to Ireland, with Irish ancestry on both sides of their family. Matthew lived in Donegal as a child and is relishing the opportunity to return to live in Ireland with his family.

He appears to be a very good candidate for the job. :)

I wonder was he a colleague of Neil Pakey from his time at Liverpool John Lennon Airport?

Aer Lingus cancels Boston flights again (Clare Herald)

Aer Lingus cancelled yesterday’s Shannon to Boston service as well as its return leg this morning because it needed the plane to fly another route from Dublin.

Todays Boston to Shannon service, due at 6.15am, was cancelled as the airline had no plane to operate the service.

Passengers due to fly from Shannon at 11.40am yesterday were taken to Dublin Airport by bus and accommodated on another flight from there.

The scheduled daily flight from Boston (EI-135) arrived in Shannon as usual early yesterday. Rather than return to Boston later in the morning, the aircraft repositioned to Dublin.

The Boeing 757-200 jet, operated by Air Contractors on behalf of Aer Lingus, later flew the EI-119 service to Washington.

Passengers booked to travel from Boston to Shannon last night were due to be facilitated on another service to Dublin and taken to Shannon by road.

For operational reasons, could they not have flown Dublin – Shannon – Boston yesterday and then the return route Boston – Shannon – Dublin instead?

Would think so because they must be fed and waters, re booked onto other flights and in lots of cases would need hotel for the night in DUB and all those expenses.

Bus to SNN wold only cost them couple of 100 quid, I would think passengers were given some sort of vouchers for future as well.

Have you seen the Newark passenger numbers for February, March and April yet?

Will they still be able to arrest the slide in numbers this year?

I would have thought the Boston – Dublin flight would be scheduled to land earlier than 08:05?

Surely by the time those transiting to other destinations, many of the early flights would have already departed.

In the good old days of the stopover at Shannon, many passengers would disembark from an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight at around 05:30 in Shannon and then it would collect new passengers travelling on to Dublin to connect for European flights.

The departure time was 06:00 and the duration of the flight on a 747 was 30 minutes. :)

There was two BOS-DUB flights last night, very unlikely all SNN pax were together and the 05.05 (04.21) and 08.05 (07.52 actual arr).

The 08.05 arrival connects with around 10 onward flights departing from 09.40 and to meet EI's MCT you would only had 20 minutes to get into and out of SNN.

Not saw them but isn't Feb due out this month?

What Aviation leasing companies are based in/operate from Shannon currently? If you would like, PM me.

Aercap, GECAS are the two big ones. Though the waters are muddied by the fact that both have numerous shell type companies they use to spread risk.

SNN-BVA looks like it's gone after October, not a surprise but still leaves SNN without any French connection in the winter (correct me if I'm wrong). Btw what's the story with the summer charters to France now that Air Med are gone...

Shannon firm breathes new life into aircraft (Limerick Post)

In a collaboration with Shannon Airport based companies, Sentinel Aviation Services Limited, (SASL), gave wings to an ex-Transaero operated Boeing 737 to its new owner Kamair which will be operated by Bravo Airways.

This project involved the input of many companies based in and around Shannon Airport and this successfully demonstrated the partnerships and willingness to cooperate in delivering first class transition projects for which larger base maintenance facilities would not have slots during the busy months.

The project team and aircraft records were based at the company’s facilities in Shannon Airport House where SASL provided 24/7 customer support from a technical and financial standpoint enabling a smooth managed transition from the previous owner.

“We worked with ASL (formally Air Contractors) for airframe and hangarage support and Vortex Aviation who provided the engine maintenance services sometimes in parallel while the aircraft was in the ASL hangar. In addition we also used the services of Eirtech Aviation for the ships new livery, West Coast Aviation who provided component and parts support and Signature Flight support for crew handling and departure. Having these companies close by who all showed a willingness to deliver first class customer service on a true 24/7 basis ensured we could provide very short turnaround solutions with such issues as engine shop support, APU replacement etc.” John Drysdale, SVP Technical said.

SASL is an Irish owned company with offices in Shannon and Dublin.

The positive knock-on effects when aviation lessors are based in Shannon.

Eirtech secures another major contract (Clare Herald)

A Shannon based aircraft engineering and services company has secured a second major contract following confirmation of one just last month.

Eirtech Aviation and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), one of longest-operating airlines in the world, have signed a contract for Aircraft end of Lease Technical Services until 2019.

The three-year agreement takes immediate effect and means Eirtech will carry out work on over 40 SAS aircraft before they are returned to their leasing company.

Eirtech secured the contract following a robust tendering process that will see the specialist aviation services company provide redelivery support for all SAS-leased aircraft, over the next three years.

The contract means that over 40 SAS aircraft reaching the end of their lease period will pass through Eirtech Aviation’s Technical Services department, located at Shannon Airport, ensuring that all aircraft are returned to the leasing company in the condition agreed at the time of leasing to SAS.
