As it's 'free' service, I doubt if there's any point in complaining. Got the phonecall too and they hadn't received my online submission to retain the address either. Could it be that a lot more people wanted to keep their email but their system didn't record their preference? I even received a new password with my updated preference but now I have no access to the email since the 20th :(

I understand it a free service, but we once did pay for it.
and maybe the complaint will have some merit based on the system not picking up the online requests.

Tbh, once they announced they were "moving" to a pay service, this was always going to be the result. Unless there were thousands of people willing to pay (which there was never going to be), there is no way the service would pay for itself.

The only reason they announced the possibility of a pay-service was because it would attract a lot less complaints than an immediate shutdown.

They were (supposedly) going to keep it 'free' for those who were broadband customers, which I still was at the time. Now, no one is being facilitated, which is a bit cheap of them. I still have an Eircom account from back in the days of dial-up and I haven't been a customer of theirs since - instead, I've been with UTV, ironically (but not any more).

Does this mean even existing paying customers are about to loose their email Accounts ????

Yes, it would appear so - they said they were withdrawing the service in its entirety from everyone, unless I took them up wrong? I have only just switched to another ISP.

Yes, just informed by tech support they're ending email even for current ISP customers in June. He did say "down south" so there better not be some POP3 Partition in progress. No ISP should be able to abdicate email provision like this. Even when the Online.ie portal ditched email, the accounts were migrated through Google hosting and are still viable.

I do not understand, why they would remove email access for existing paying customers and not have any notification on their web site, leaving only 5 weeks to get everything in order.
It seems like my rant to their customer service sparked the removal of the online updating, or just coincidence.....
Have they no concept of how intergrated an email address is to people...
It will take months to sort out any new changes.
we need a name to communicate to

Honestly? Probably none of them. Unless UTV are actually breaking a contract (i.e. they have a commitment in their agreement with you to continue providing email), then they're just withdrawing an optional service which was provided for free. You have 5 weeks to migrate your email, you'd be far better focussing on that (starting right now) rather than trying to get UTV to reverse a decision they've already made

Can I actually migrate my email address to another provider ????

And my main grip is that they have not offically announced it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 526 ✭✭✭silverski

Also Can it be confirmed by anyone that I can continue to use services that were set up using my old utv address or will most or all services alllow for email changes.

and this is going to take me more than 5 weeks

A UTV email address? No. I meant migrate as in start alerting your contacts to your new email address

Didn't realise that, that's pretty poor from them

You will still be able to log in, but you're far better off changing the email address associated with the account. Otherwise, you won't be able to receive any correspondence from them.

    It shouldn't:
    • Set up your new email address
    • Email all your active/important contacts with the new email address
    • Redirect all new incoming mail so they go to the new email address
    • Reply only from the new email address
    • Add an auto-reply to your UTV account that notifies anybody mailing that address that it is now defunct, and they should update their details
    • Update all the accounts and services associated with the UTV email address to your new address

I migrated from o2.ie to gmail a few years back. Its a headache, but it was doable. Only 1 account(for a games service) was unable to be moved. Take a weekend and go through your old registration emails for services and then login and move them over. Keep a checklist or you'll go nuts.

Thankfully I decided to ditch UTV back in January when they made this announcement. It's time consuming to go through all your emails. Arrange them alphabetically in your inbox and just go through them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 371 ✭✭Teagwee

Thankfully, I never attached my UTV email to anything of any great importance. I found this out when I sorted all my UTV emails for the last 12 months in Outlook - nothing there that I can't do without :) One or two things will require re-registration if I need to get any updates, but that's easy to do and not exactly urgent.
I feel for anyone that has this email as their main address but it's a wake up call for anyone who has similar email accounts tied to an ISP - don't put all your eggs in the one basket!

    Greetings all,

I do not think that UTV have fully thought this through, the loss of business is going to be huge.

I wonder if they have a marketing department, given that they are going to do this, I don't think they do.

This must hearld the closing of UTV as we know it..

A company closing a free service that it was offering to non customers will loose it business? It will save them a lot of money. Anyone who had the slightest idea of internet security wouldn't be using an email provided by an ISP anyway.

    UTV is expanding actually.

It's not just closing the service to non-customers though - it's stopping it for everyone.

Last I heard it was only non customers. Its only a good thing for the people loosing the service anyway, it has almost 0 security.

They are closing the entire service for everyone - got an email and a phonecall to say so. Agree though about not relying on ISP emails and most likely not great for security.

You are vastly, vastly overestimating the importance of an ISP providing an email service. The majority of people don't even realise they have an ISP address, never mind actually using it. And virtually no-one makes a decision on what ISP to use based on the email they provide

If you're sending an email to all your correspondents, put all their email addresses as a Bcc and leave To and CC blank

This increases the likelihood of being tagged as spam. You should put one address in the To field, ideally one other than your own.

For those of you migrating mail, look into Imapsync. If you're not comfortable running out yourself, any competent sysadmin will run it for you for a small fee.

    1. Set up a hosting account with a reputable provider.
    2. See 1.

You need hosting and a domain name. You can buy these separately, but probably simpler to get them off the one provider. You could also just get a domain name, and use Google Apps for Business for your email, although since you mentioned a website, that may not suit.

Unfortunately, hosting discussion is banned on boards, so you can't get recommendations here

Still have ours for the moment, ,do call them and they may reset your password and allow access.

I did that for 2 of our email addresses.
    Cheers

Why would info on hosting be banned,????
