Neutral here. THat was a diabolical free to give for the winning point. The Mayo player picked the ball clean off the ground too as he dived to the ground to win the free.

In the lead up too the free,he decided to throw the ball up,I'm not sure what for as far as I saw it,the Mayo player touched the ball on the ground.

I don't like blaming the ref too often but that was a terrible way to finish the game.

Can someone explain to me why there was a throw ball before the final free? The Mayo player picked the ball up off the ground, held onto to it for an age and then threw it one handed. How does that result in a throw ball?

Referee aside Dublin will be disappointed they didn't see it out.

Absolutely ridden bare back by the ref there. Gutted for the lads after such an incredible comeback.

I couldn't figure out the last free either, but just before the free to level it we had a stonewall jersey pulling right under his nose, then he didn't give DOC free when he possibly should have, but rewards it 1 minute later with a soft one in the far corner.

Anyway we were asleep at the start, Mayo were coming hard for the last 10 minutes and had the momentum in fairness to them.

We looked flat at the end too, the half back line was shattered.

Ah yeah, I know. To be honest, given the incredibly poor start, it was a game that we probably didn't deserve to win. Still, the lads deserve great credit for coming back the way that they did & putting themselves in a position to win the game. They are a very young side and they will learn a lot from today. They have already exceeded most peoples expectations of them. That O'Connor lad is some player. He has learned A LOT of....ahem...cuteness from his big bro.

Big congrats to the Minors too.

Anyway, yop would have left boards if we won.

Does this count as karma for 1995?

    I'll get my coat.

Sounded like a great day out for both games. The future is bright.

Be interesting to see if Gavin calls O'Callaghan into the squad from here on in. He was quite impressive in the brief run out during the O'Byrne Cup. Did he play in a couple of our early round league games too? I can't remember. Can't really see him making the match day 26, never mind the starting 15, for another couple of years. But it would be good experience for him, just to be around that environment.

O'Callaghan is one for the future. Impressive kid. Would like to see him get a chance at senior level next year or the year after.

Yeah he's handy played a few on the OByrne cup, think he has a sub appearance in the league he didn't continue his run into the league, from what I remember his first game was his best, think he got a goal and a couple of points.

There is plenty of time for him to get his shot. It's important not to rush the development of young players, or put too much pressure on them, or expect too much too soon imo. Look at Costello. He has been much ballyhooed, (deservedly so) but he is in his 4th year on the panel, without having made much of an impact. McHugh was the hero of the 2014 u21 title, but he seems to have fallen off the radar completely. But their day will come. It'll have to, as O'Gara, Kev Mc & Berno are 30, 29 & 32. It just won't be today, or tomorrow.

    Split Mayo in two....

Ah in all honesty, two very soft frees near the end, especially the one where the Mayo player seems to be holding the Dublin defenders arm. Mayo were on a roll at that stage, would have equalised eventually

That was an obvious one alright, but you are correct Mayo were on a roll and at least a draw seemed inevitable, our lads were bunched. I'm not that bothered overall, they showed good resolve to come back, they were flat at the end that's fixable but it resulted in sloppy play and wayward passes. Still could have won it but didn't on the day, they say you need a bit if luck to win, we'd a reverse one against Cavan a few years ago but those lads were pipped vs tip before, but we'll beaten by them after that. It's up and down at this level I think we'll be good next year.

Spot on. Dublin tried to go defensive when they were four points up but they were too wrecked to keep the ball. I think if they had more experience and were cuter about it they could have drawn frees at that stage.
Cork did it v Monaghan in the game after when they wanted to kill the game.

There was one thing that baffled me a bit about O'Connor Park though.
You could actually hear the fella on the tannoy and understand him. (Even though he was speaking in biffo dialect) :D)

Whereas in Parnell Park and Croke Park you would be lucky to hear a couple of words with all the echoing of the speakers.

There was one slight annoyance for me though the parking in Tullamore GAA was 5 euro's. Jayus the parking beside Parnell Park is not that dear! :(

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

First of all, hats off to Mayo, they overall probably deserved it. Some come back from the dubs, Con was stand out up front, had a great game.

The last throw ball i don't know why that was given, after the kick out but the defender was outside the area when the keeper kicked it.

I know Mayo had a ball signalled wide in the second half and they claimed it was over but there was a mayo point that i reckon was a complete wide. I had said it to my mates beside me who said 'oh i didnt see it' so i just left it, then a stranger beside me who was supporting Mayo said, 'i think you're right, that went behind the post...'.
It was when a young lad travelled well with it and then curled it in from the left but it definitely went behind the post.

You can't go scoreless for as long as they did and expect to win, gutsy come back though

Just to broaden the U21's discussion - I think as others have said the consensus was that this years batch didn't bring the level of expectancy as the previous year and within the 2 year development cycle, 2017 is probably when we'll see the best of them.

I'm just wondering in this context whether other people sense that Dessie Farrell will have to deliver an AI in order to reestablish his credentials as JG's heir. I have to say that in terms of in-play tactical changes he's been found slow to recognise the need - Cavan, Laois and Tipp SF last year spring to mind - I know it's not today or tomorrow but I'm sure Jim will hang up the tracksuit once the 5 in a row is sorted

I think with reference to Dessie being slow to implement tactical changes when needed the same could be said to have applied to Jim Gavin previously. The defeat by Donegal in 2014 is a case in point. In the second half it was obvious to everyone watching that we were being murdered because our half back line was too far forward yet Jim did nothing to resolve it.

That's not a criticism of Gavin. I think he learnt hugely from that. It takes a few mistakes before anyone beds into the intercounty role properly.

I've no idea whether Dessie will be the heir to that throne but whoever takes over is going to have to be allowed find their feet

I agree, he was slow in 2013 to switch Brennan off Gooch, we got away it +7 points but still got away with it.
Didn't happen in 2014, I'd rather Dessie learn that at u21 level and I'd say he is learning. I think he's the real deal.

Does anyone know if The Hill is open this weekend? I heard something about the performance afterwards may mean its closed. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

dublingaa.ie says you can buy terrace tickets at €20 and they are also available to buy on tickets.ie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Wintergreen

I seen that but was wondering if that meant The Nally?

When you go to buy it it says Hill Terrace.

Seen that as well but was still wondering as I had previously heard from a few people it was closed! I actually had my tickets bought earlier but a friend from Europe wants to come along so I'm looking to get two more but keep costs down. Think I'll just go with the Terrace, thanks for the input!

To me that was mumblings and rumours because early on there were no terrace tickets for sale. Nobody from Croke Park or either county board has said it would be closed as far as I'm aware.

It was more than "mumblings and rumours."

Last week I was told by Croke Park and DCB that Hill was not going to be opened. I got Hill tickets yesterday in Dorset Street with Parnell Passes. While I was there another woman was told she could only buy Nally tickets if she wanted terrace tickets. Now, apparently you can buy Hill tickets without PP pass.

Talk about making it up as you go along!

I did ask someone au fait with the esoteric goings on in the upper echelons and he told me that the sideshow organisers did want to close Hill, but that DCB objected on behalf of clubs and supporters. Properly so.

BTW, I have nothing against the 1916 stuff, and will stay if Dublin win - otherwise I will be out the door :)

However, the games and the people who keep them going are first, second and last.

Such was the confusion I just went ahead with 2 Cusack tickets .. sunday morning match means I'm under pressure to get in for Tyrone/Cavan .. possibly not a bad thing .. tho I've heard that Cavan have expanded their game this year ...

Sorry I should have followed this up but yesterday I bought two "Terrace" tickets off Tickets.ie and they are indeed for The Hill.

Should be a cracking game and a great day out, especially if the weather remains this good. I've booked the Monday off :D
