Tony Gilbert on UKWW believes a sting jet occlusion will form with this storm and cross Ireland in the early morning. This is worrying and hopefully he's wrong about this.

    Indeed he posted

    explain please thank you

It is a feature that sometimes develops in these kinds of cyclones that can produce very strong winds.

For people thinking of driving, there will be 2 main issues.
The first will be gusts, which can and will cause problems, especially for HGV drivers. Fallen trees are clearly a risk. Then there is rain, both falling and already on the ground.
Motorways are safER but there will still be risks.
Main roads will be less safe due to more trees close to the road.
Minor roads even more so, trees and full drainage ditches are a real danger.
Daylight will at least mean you should see the hazards wih time to stop.
Night driving tonight could be hazardous in the extreme.
Aftrr that it will be down to the weight of your vehicle and how competent you are at dealing with the unexpected.
A mobile phone and decent warm jackets for everyone in the vehicle are the absolute minimum if you are on the roads after dark.
The above is based on over 40 years of driving in all conditions in a number of countries.
Good luck and stay safe to all that have to be out over the next 36 hours.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

The BBC forecast just there suggested the north west will take a direct hit from this tomorrow, not really what the models are showing so a bit confused with what to expect here. I'm still expecting a strong to severe gale here right on the coast either way but that forecast showed 70-80mph winds over the whole NW

On sting jets, it was one of those that caused the sustained hurricane force winds in Donegal in Jan 2012 with Malin Head recording 91kts. Lost three trees and a fence in the garden that night so definitely not something we want to see

This is just an animation of what the GFS weather model has predicted for the current time. It doesnt actually show "real" conditions, but still looks pretty cool.

Well the centre of the low is eventually going to end up over Scotland so the northwest will get hit by severe winds, maybe just not from the initial stage.

    Storm in real time

Is that correct? Is it different from the others posted?

The standard one has to be updated manually every three hours, so is not live and is not automatically refreshed.

It's showing winds at 1000hpa as forecast by the GFS. It's just an animated version instead of a typical weather chart.

Debating on wether to go out tonight or stay in and watch the storm develop, the talk of sting jets around Mayo are a interesting and scary prospect.

this looks to be the real deal, its seems to have every type of warning from most sources even talk of sting jet and tornadoes, not sure how accurate these are...glad im in probably one of the most sheltered spots, inland southeast, hope all on the south and west coasts are safe and well.

I hope people arent feeling brave because the last two systems 'underperformed' a bit. There is very real danger potential out there tonight and tomorrow, flying debris in darkness and fallen trees and powerlines are very likely even in areas not normally badly affected by atlantic storms, the advice would be stay close to your own property in case of damage or power loss and dont venture far or to unfamiliar locations just for the buzz.

    Hi,
Just standing here in Old Head Louisburgh at the beach. The sea is weirdly calm. And the breeze seems to be coming from the east.

Supposed to be running from Howth to Greystones tomorrow at 9:30, how bad are the conditions likely to be?

Can someone explain what a sting jet is? Sounds like a bomber plane but methinks it's something more meteorological than that. :-)

Started raining in Cork City about 20 mins ago, wind also picking up.

Rain began here in west Kerry at about 1300 -- just as the Wren Boys went out. :(

Has become gradually much windier too but still a long way off 2 nights ago - for now.

Still as anything here in Waterford city. You'd never guess there was a storm on the way.

A area of very strong winds at the tip of the "hook" cloud that you see on satelite images, that sometimes can develop with these type of storms. It should be clear later on if thats going to happen or not. It's just one guys opinion that it may happen, it's not part of any official forecast.

Rain started here in North Clare in the past 20 minutes and a bit of a breeze so far.

Rain driven by a South Easterly breeze arriving here at my exposed location in West Limerick.

It will be interesting watching for it to swing around to the South West as normally winds are South Westerly.

    Bring it on :)
