I need to invest in a good suit in the next couple of months. How much would people be paying for such a thing?

Depends, if your lucky enough to have an off the peg suit fir you well then 300 to 500 is enough to get a good suit. If otoh like most of us you find the otp range to be sized around a mythical creature who bears no resemblance to any human you happen to be.. You need to get a bespoke suit. The fit is more important than anything else, next quality of material and last style. I say last as as long as it's not some collar less hyper fashionable thing suits tend to stay in style for a long time.
Save up and spent 500 to 1000, you'll get 10 years out of it.

    Decent set of luggage

    And to smell good

People still use fountain pens?

Everyday. I hate when I can't find it and have to make a quick note with a ball point. It pales in comparison.

Down with all forms of pen.

For me it has to be a good HB pencil complete with battery operated sharpener.

Never got the whole 'pen' thing. But then again, my handwriting is atrocious and a good pen would be wasted on me.

    Fail.

A true gentleman would possess a proper manual metal sharpener or a manual desk sharpener.

I am the opposite - my handwriting is very neat and I take care with it.

A good fountain pen would be the perfect present for me. I wouldn't trust myself with a very expensive one though. I always put things into my pocket after using them. Where it goes after that is up to fate and how big my pockets are.

Ya can't beat the little pens out of the bookies;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭scotchy

OK, here's what we have so far.

    A decent pen (fountain, naturally)
A double edged razor (& badger hair brush)
A good leather wallet (ripper canvas ones are a no-no)
The knowledge as to how to tie a decent knot in one's tie
    Good quality white shirt
    Pair of black shoes
    Good suit
    Decent pocket knife
    Good quality watch
    A good smartphone
    Hip flask
    A good set of tools
    Good quality Cuff Links
    Tiepin
    Nail clippers
    Pocket notebook
    White cotton handkerchief
    Good aftershave
    Good coat
    Good gloves
    Good quality luggage
    Selection of good belts
A good pair of Sun Glasses

    Also I'd like to add.

    A good tablet computer
    A good pair of earphones/headphones

Apologies for leaving out the big screen TVs, futons and globe drinks cabinets etc, but they are not necessarily Gentlemen's essentials IMO

I put in the pocket knife, but not sure if its a good idea to carry a knife no matter what its for. I have one in work and I have lots at home.
Personally I think anybody who carries a knife in public is no gentleman.

    Apologies if I missed anything.

I'd say headphones instead of earphones. Earphones can do damage to your hearing if you're careless.

Cool thread! Here's my tuppence worth :-)

    Every man should have the best of one of the following ;
    Suit (Hugo Boss)
    Watch
    Wallet
    Shoes
    Sense of humour
    Scotch

I agree about a decent pen, Parkers are my favourite.

No, no. A good mechanical pencil with 0.5mm leads. Always sharp.

I would also add to the list, a good hammock and a suitable hat for the summertime. No better way to spend an afternoon.

If you lack a hip flask, this one recently caught my eye http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hipptitanium/hipp-titanium-the-hip-flask-reborn-in-titanium

And headphones can't be listen to TOO LOUD?

Doesn't make sense saying earphones are potentially more damaging than headphones.

Some people stick them in too far. Not all ear phones are built of the same quality or length.
