No reason why high powered fwd cars "tend" to be like that. Proof is your car now ok after geometry correction.

    For now atleast.

I may be abit biased as 6 of the 8 wheels the car came with were buckled, maybe I bought into the pub talk hype about for that reason

We strongly recommend a thorough physical inspection with a qualified ATA registered technician before proceeding. The number of owners for this vehicle seems to be above the average for a vehicle of its age. This may have a depreciating effect on the vehicle's value if you intend to sell the vehicle in the short term.
If the information regarding 'dates of sale' demonstrates that there were more sales than owners, this may be explained by the fact that some vehicle keepers (e.g. a motor dealer) are not recorded as 'owners' on the vehicle's history.

We recommend determining whether or not there has been a bona-fide period of non-use and ensuring that all road tax arrears are fully addressed before completing a purchase.
We have also noticed a previous gap in the taxation dates. This may be explained by a period of non-use where the car was not taxed. Clocked and crashed and many owners and uk import? Jeez if there was a "avoid of the year" award in the nominations thread that car would win.

It seems that interesting and/or actual drivers cars are never lusted after anymore. I think it's not just a problem in this forum but Ireland in general. Just even reading here about a 114d is actually depressing. What people aspire to nowadays is sad.

Yes from the few posts I've seen of TP he does very high mileage so a large diesel cruiser does fit the bill in this instance, but there are plenty of nicer options out there than possibly Mercedes worst era of cars (and not only for looks).

It's just depressing seeing people aspire to own boring diesels.

To be fair if you have to go diesel a Saab 9-5 is just about the nicest you could get in the price range.

I find all diesel BMWs depressing but the 518D, 316D and mostly the 114D are really depressing. Not sure why I find the small diesels so depressing because I don't really have a problem with the 316i but there you go!

Agreed on the 4 pot diesels being depressing. A 4 pot shouldn't be in a bmw but a 4 pot diesel definitely should not.
I find the 518d worse than the 114d/316d. At least the 1 series is not a drivers car and the 3 is a small car too. But a 5'er is supposed to be a "premium" car and should not be a 518d. Should be a 530d minimum, they had it right in the irish e39

Owning any sort of car that isn't a wheexing hair-shirt with wheels is just depressing. Thank you Minister Varadkar. Christ if I see him crossing the street..... Fun ist verboten.

Something like a Caterham 7, maybe with a lightweight engine like the Ford 1 litre ecobost behind the driver with a transaxle.... that's the solution to cheap motoring. Well, cheapish.

    It might even be fun.

I'd look at it a different type of way, people generally are driven to strive for new cars, aim for low tax (often a false economy), status brands and then flip it on after a couple o f years. With limited resources, this means entry keel, unexciting vehicles which will often cost more over the period of ownership. Germans also strive for new cars but expect to hold them for much longer - even or especially wealthy people.

I posted a video in the yootoob thread a while back showing the acceleration 0-100 of that car. It is a seriously quick car, seriously quick.
I'm not sure which I prefer, the m550d or the x5 m50d. I think the idea of an SUV that is faster 0-100 than my 535 and does better combined economy is hilarious.

On my "bucket list" of cars (excluding supercars) there is only one diesel and it is the m550d. Although in fairness the list is topped by a 8.3 v10 dodge ram SRT so I think that says a lot :P

You must remember though, the e39 was released in an era when money wasn't as big a problem as it is for people these days. Back then people wanted cars that performed and were petrol. I know the e34 was only a few years behind that and did come in 518i but also, the 80's recession probably spawned that at the time. All people want nowadays is small tax and small engines and they really aren't cars that one can aspire to own IMO :o

The e34 518i probably was spawned by the same thing that spawned the f10 518d, economy and fleet sales in times of recession and high fuel costs.

Certainly can't aspire to own a 518d just because of the 141 plate, i mean what else has that car got going for it. A nearly 2 ton 518d?

I knew you two would be straight on me :P

I don't find the large engined ones depressing, I just don't see the point of them.

E60 530i 24-30 MPG, E60 530d 34-39 MPG. The 530i sounds better, more refined, more powerful and if you convert it to LPG (which you could do with the difference in purchase price over the diesel) you could run it for less money. So for the love of god why would you ever get a diesel :confused:

Cleveland I know you just like diesel and that's why you got it and don't mind paying extra for it but most people get diesel to try to save money with lower running costs. In this case they just aren't there.

I got diesel as I like diesel, however I was dissappointed as the 535d does not sound dieselly. It sounds refined. Except on a cold start of course, but if you put the foot to the floor on the motorway, the only giveaway is the mountains of torque that punches you in the stomach and the occasional black smoke out the back if you push it on.

A 535d is faster than a 530i. So that is not a valid comparison. The only e60s faster are the v8 petrols.

I know the 535d is faster but the 530d isn't. I know you like your car because it's diesel and that's your thing and I get that. It's not mine though and I'm sure you don't like my car but can understand that I do.

The bit I have a problem with is getting a 530d or a 535d to save on running costs when you can run the petrol for less and to most people petrol cars are more enjoyable.

I don't particularly like it anymore though, hence why I'm selling :P. But liking my car or your car isn't really an issue here (FWIW I do actually like your levin, not so much the kia :pac: but it is what it is. )

I don't think anyone gets a 535d to save on running costs. The e60 530/535d are not exactly economical. Especially so the 535d. Ybfocus regularly reports getting 5-6 mpg more than I get from my 535d in similar driving.

You cannot run an equivalent e60 petrol for less than a 535d. The only equivalents are the 540i-545i-550i. Like I said, the v8 petrols. I would not see any way to buy, tax and fuel them for cheaper than I can run my 535d. Even with LPG.

You are right on the V8s being the next step up (and the 530i being no where near the 535d) but I would suspect with a long enough payback period or high enough miles a V8 5 series is cheaper to run when converted to LPG than a 535d. Likely cheaper to buy, cheaper fuel by a long shot and not as terrible MPG as you would think. Especially if compared tp a 535d pushed hard.

Then there is the matter of a a non-Turbo V8 compared to a high compression twin turbo diesel from a reliability perspective (turbos, injectors, DMF, gearbox, intercooler and piping etc are all high cost maintenance items over a long period). The 535d suits the majority of people though, LPG V8 has lack of cars to choose from and lack of fueling stations.

See that is the thing. I only do about 20-25k miles per year across the fleet. So my main car gets maybe 10-12 of that. If I have to spend €1.5k on an lpg conversion, 1.5k buys a lot of diesel for the 535d! And 530i are cheap to buy, but 540i/550i are not easy to find and are not cheap.

Perhaps in a 5-6 year timeframe a 545i would be cheaper. But over 1 or 2 years I don't think so.

In saying that, I am currently pricing up an LPG conversion for my own v8 of sorts, the yank tank. Worlds apart from a 545i of course, but relevant as I would not do it if I were looking for a payoff in 6-12 months.
Once I sell my 535d I am going to get something like an 850i or an e39 540i and LPG it, use as daily.
