Gym Membership - What are you paying?

I'm curious as to know what people pay for their gym memberships.

Mine is €45 a month. (With a membership fee of €50 when joining first!) In the town next to mine, they have a special of €80 for 3 months. But it doesn't suit me with the times I work to go.

A friend of mine mentioned she was joining one that was €170 for 14 months!

Mine is €140 for 6 months but I get back €15 p/m from work so it only costs me €50 for 6 months.

There's another gym that does €165 for 12 months but the opening hours are horrible.

ben dunnes do an offer usually at the end of the year, buy in oct/nov and renew in 14 months. I paid 175/195 (cant remember which) for that membership

Think mine is €175 for 3 months, I pay monthly at €60! Fairly expensive compared to others around but I like it there and it's close so i go more!

I paid €289 for a year in RAW, was still a student when I joined. Great value

I pay €8.70 to a "pay as you go" gym when I'm in Kilkenny at the weekends, pretty steep

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭RidleyRider

I pay 33e a month but it would normally be 40e if I wasn't in college.

I'm paying 48 euro a month, thinking of changing Gym soon though. Been in Ben Dunnes in Lucan a few times not my cup of tea really.

€390 a year and usually get 14 months and an added extra (maybe a free four-week Bootcamp programme or similiar)... it's all relative though isn't it... it's close by, I enjoy it there, know lots of members and staff at this stage and it suits me down to the ground really... another Squat Rack and a few new DBs and plates be great - but what ya gonna do?!

180 per month I'm curious to know what gym? If you don't mind :) it would want to have some serious set up.

Can you pay as you go or do you have to sign up for so many months pay per month or pay for set months only?

    Crossfit at a guess.

€45 a month. Around €400 for a year, but I think I've only ever seen 1 other person use the power rack, so well worth it.

    $30 a week

Crossfit Ireland. It's really the best money I spend every month tbh. But I need the structure and knowledge to achieve my goals. Lots of people on here would be well able to work away on their own or have their own gyms / businesses / etc and obviously wouldn't need it.

A few sessions with a personal trainer would give you a good routine.

    That's over €2k a year..

    Possibly.

If it's motivation he's looking for there's better ways to find it than shelling out a fortune.

I think these crossfit gyms are a complete rip off. Train to become average at a number of different disciplines. That sounds like a great idea.

It's the persons attitude towards work which will inevitably see gains not shelling out these figures memntioned

What works for you might not work for others, and if it works for him and he's happy with what he is achieving as are other members of crossfit then power to them.

    That's all that matters really.

Wow, I'm surprised the amount some people are paying but whatever works for them! I could easily go for the €80 for 3 months but it doesn't work with my schedule. So €45 a month is which isn't really a lot to be honest.

Yeah sure. I mean what did we all before cross fit. If he's happy to pay someone an extortionate sum of money for a training plan you could put together with a few trips to the library.

    Sure. More power to them.

Spend a year studying/saving then go buy a cross fit rig and it'd probably cost you less than a years membership.

If he wants to spend it on that or even unicorn porn then who cares?

If he spent 40 quid a week on alcohol no one would bat an eye.

If everyone had the ability to study up on good exercise and nutrition plans and were able to self coach themselves through video review and reading then this forum wouldn't exist; no-one would be unfit; etc.

It's my health. I can only speak of the progress I've made in terms of strength, conditioning and body composition since I joined Crossfit. Turn up five times a week, do what your told, take on board some of the nutritional information: make progress. Seems like value to me.

It's certainly not value but by all means if it makes you happy work away.

My comments were more aimed at cross fit in general not yourself.

I don't care where he spends his money. I was just saying it's not value and the same can be achieved without shelling out a fortune.

    Perhaps you missed my point!!

The whole "its his money he can do what he wants with it" aside you'd have to be a total fool to pay that much a month.

I think the big advantage of crossfit is just that it isn't routine, you're constantly doing different things. Its also small class sizes with plenty of tuition etc. You cant really compare classes with working out yourself in a gym cost wise.
That said I pay less then 1k per year for a crossfit gym, regular gym and pool.

One of the points I was making there. Although still expensive at least you have the benefits of a gym and pool, which I would have thought would provide more of a fitness routine than working on individual muscle groups.

Sure either way it's better than doing nothing I guess I'm just amazed at the cost of it.

Good Luck in your efforts hopefully cross fit loses it's appeal and the prices become more realistic.

200+ total fools in my crossfit anyway.

To be honest, I probably shouldn't have posted. Should have known we'd get into a pointless argument over the value of crossfit. It's a branded strength and conditioning program ultimately with a fair amount of personal attention. It's not cheap and - if you really knew your stuff and were highly self motivated as many on this forum will be - you probably don't need to be spending it. But for many people spending it (or slightly less for a limited classes per week package) it's worth it because they achieve consistent measurable progress in terms of their health and fitness.

Hmm, not to be dismissive, but you might not understand what's on offer in a well programmed and run crossfit box.

No reason not to post its a forum open for differing opinions yours is as valid as mine or anyone else's but I bet you wish it was cheaper. :-)

I see the points you're making but you also see measured results outside of gyms amd cross fit studios.

    Good Luck with it.

    €11 a month for a 16 month BD membership.

    It's grand.

But I also have access to a fully kitted out S&C gym & a pool at work so it's just a back up for weekends & holidays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,869 ✭✭✭thegreatiam

pay 15 a month for a gym and thats what you get. use of facilities and equipment.
pay 180 for cross fit then you get more, not only use of the equipment but a high portion of supervised activity, personalized program and one to one work with an experienced qualified team of coaches. the cross fit in sandyford has an onsite physio too as do many of the others.

sure my ben dunnes gym does free classes, but almost 0 one on one and im not convinced of the quality. they have PTs but you have to pay extra for them.

cross fit gym users get a personalized and supervised program with nutrition and tuition for the duration.

at a commercial gym you may get the program written but youre on your own after that no one will motivate you and retest you for the duration of the program.

    I agree to a point.

The one thing that Rots my ****e about CF gyms is that after paying the equivalent of a mortgage per month in some cases, you're only allowed be in the premises 20 hours a month.

Many XFitters then have another gym membership on top because for a lot of people, 5 hours a week isn't enough.

I wasn't giving out about the value of crossfit, I simply feel that no fitness programme or facility is worth €2000 a year. I would say that if you shopped around you could quite easily find a much cheaper, equally effective crossfit gym to join. You come across as a bad consumer if you are willing to part with 2k a year when there are hundreds of much cheaper alternatives. You must have money to burn.

What? You'd think if someone was serious enough about fitness to pay 180 p/m they'd want to use the gym as much as possible.

I can see why people would pay a premium for CF style gym but that would definitely put me off. I don't think the hours would suit me either.

This IS annoying. The lack of any open gym times is irritating. I'd definitely use it if it was available. However, there is a theory behind it:

    A) Programming and coaching is what you pay for. Coming down to work on your own defeats to some extent the purpose of what is trying to be achieved;
    B) Barring fairly high level or elite focussed training, five good solid sessions a week with adequate rest and recovery around it is enough for people. And additional work might actually be counter productive and affect progress, increase chances of injury;

Hundreds of cheaper alternatives? I'm really confused and surprised by this. You're telling me that there are literally 100+ S + C facilities in the Dublin area that are well equipped (bumper plates; plenty of racks, bands, rowers, etc); offer coached sessions; individual attention from an assigned coach; nutritional advice and assistance for much cheaper?

Do you have a few examples to hand? Thanks in advance.

Some people are happy to pay the monthly fee for Crossfit and other semi-private S&C gyms (SDSC, RevFit etc.) because they get...
    - coaching
    - structured programming (in some boxes anyway!)
    - exposure to different types of training
    - Nutritional advice
    - friends
    - an immediate support structure and community feel
    - social events
    - in house competition
    - Good quality equipment for the most part

Anyone can go and do a wod in any commercial gym, a park, their sitting room.... but wod's aren't what they are paying for. Provided they get the above then its actually great value. You may not agree withe the price, but value is entirely dependent on what the person spending the money feels is value. Cheaper than seeing a PT once a week for the same service too...

(This is coming from a powerlifter that works as a PT and trains in a commercial gym btw)

Before I went to college I was paying €520 a year. Most expensive one around but its the only one that I can walk to so I was paying for the convenience.
At college its €190 from Sept to May(Student Rate) and then I pay €175 for the summer for my gym at home.

Going to the gym costs me 360 per month, 60 for the gym membership and 300 to have my baby minded.

There is no other way I would get any exercise or time without the kid unless I pay.

I have to accept that it's worth it - it's either stop the rot now or get fatter / weaker / even less balanced.
