    ; )

Seriously though , as I say new to cycling. But tackling a 3 lane roundabout sounds dodgy -- especially with dodgy drivers also.

First bike I bought was from a shop in town. I was never so freaked out when riding on the road for the first time in god knows how long. I had to take it across town once, so I walked the busiest part. The first few trips are the scariest, after that it's fine. Now I'd ride backwards through a darkened tunnel. Well, maybe not, but you get my drift.

I was the exact same today. Haven't cycled a bike in about 20 years !!!

Like if I was to for example cycle out the long mile road towards that Joel's place with the glass front, that seems very dodge. Or is that classed as a motorway.

It's really obvious what is a motorway. It has a big blue sign telling you so. The Long Mile Road is not a motorway.

When on a road like the n81, I presume cyclists are supposed to keep to the left in the bus lane or whatever. But when a cyclist is approaching a roundabout and they want to take the 3rd exit, are they supposed to ONLY when approaching the roundabout , move to the very right lane and act accordingly. ??

In a lane like this should the cyclist stay toward the right hand side of the lane ( driver side in a car ) or toward the left side ( passenger side in a car ) ? Or am I making sense at all

When approaching a roundabout, the safest thing to do is take a primary position, as if you were a car. So stick yourself right in the middle of whichever lane is appropriate for your exit and go through the roundabout or turn as if you were a car.

Sound. And presume cyclists should stick to bus lanes where possible yeah ?

Yeah the accepted thing is to stay left, but it's not the law so you can cycle in the other lane if there's left turning traffic or if you're turning right you can move out into the lane after indicating.

I assume this roundabout on the N81 was the one intersecting the M50. In which case the safest way of completing a u-turn would have been stopping before the roundabout, getting off the bike and and using the pedestrian crossing.

At an appropriate distance (maybe 200m from the roundabout), move, safely, from the left lane to the right lane. Occupy the center of the lane. Negotiate roundabout. Check sock height. Ensure armwarmers are not slipping, move back to the left of the lane, enjoy the rest of your ride.

    That's the one yeah.

I didnt even go on to the n81 on my bike. I did the U turn before even going on to n81.

I just know the particular stretch of road from driving it previously.

Are you saying cyclists cannot use the n81 ?

Not at all. I just thought a tut tut would have appropriately rounded out the post.

ah! the last time I cycled that route there was a separated cycle path and flyover for bikes to cross the M50. is that not still the case?

I'm essentially a novice. Haven't cycled in 20 years. And my use will just be for casual cycles

I went for the Giant escape 2 hybrid.

    I'm happy with it anyways.

The more serious cyclists will probably sneer at this choice, but its perfect for me.

Good bike. Best of luck with it.

    Won't outrun a grizzly though.

    Hello again

Do I need a special pump for my giant escape. As I said havent been near a bike in 20 yeaars

I took the little cap off the valve

And then underneath the cap, there is a little screw thing that I can screw in and out ( i.e its not like the valve in a car tyre or like the bikes I had before )

Do I need a special pump for this ?

That's a presta valve. Pretty much standard. One if the two types most commonly seen.

I'd get a track pump though. It might seem a little pricey, but when you use it you'll know why it's a good idea.

Thanks. Yep , googled it just now and it is a presta valve.

I have an old pump from years ago( the one you screw on - like a car tyre fitting ) , presume this will not work on this presta valve ?

Also, is it best to pump a wheel so that the valve is at the bottom of the wheel ?

That pump will work grand. You'll need a new linky yoke though. While you're in the shop, ask them to give you a demo of the track pump though. Bet you walk out with that rather than the adaptor! :) These days, most people would also carry a small pocket pump. Cheap as chips, and enough to get you home.

Doesn't really matter where the valve is, once its steady and isn't flexing around. There's also a ring nut holding the valve steady against the rim. Make sure that's tightened down.

    Lovely, thanks a million !

And sorry for all the q's. Yee must be goin what the hell is up with this lad, but ive never seen this type of valve before so was unsure, thats what 20 years not having exposure to bikes does : )
