Both likely enough results but reflected in the odds, in fairness.

Have thrown €5 on each of the NZ franchises to beat the handicap against the Lions. It's about 25/1.

    Hurricanes (+4.0) @ 10/11
    Chiefs (+7.0) @ 10/11
    Highlanders (+15.0) @ 10/11
    Crusaders (+6.0) @ 10/11
    Blues (+13.0) @ 10/11

Are they **** hot or is the opposition just rubbish? Or Column A and B?

Well... it's the Lions. Do you think the squad is rubbish? The NZ teams are all doing very well this season pretty much though.

    Hurricanes (+4.0) @ 10/11
    Chiefs (+7.0) @ 10/11
    Highlanders (+15.0) @ 10/11
    Crusaders (+6.0) @ 10/11
    Blues (+13.0) @ 10/11

i can see the hurricanes beating that small spread, as at that stage it will be the 'non testers' starting

im not so sure about the crusaders, i think the lions set piece and power plays are better suited to playing them than say the chiefs or highlanders.....

and god only knows how the blues game could go.... theyve a squad good enough to beat the lions, but i think thats the game that gatland will be looking to start a lot of his main players.

Bit of both. The handicaps aren't massively generous but I reckon the Lions shouldn't even be favourites for one or two of these.

The Crusaders game is going to be very tough. They're on fire, are going to be playing at home in front of a partisan crowd who won't get to see the Lions in Canterbury aside from that game. It's far enough out from the test series that they could have a lot of guys available. I think the Blues expect to have test players released too.

There's a good reason the odds are so long and I'd expect the bet to fail but it stood out as an interesting one. I think it was Sean Fitz who said something along the lines of "If the Lions reckon NZ are aiming for a 3-0 tour, they're wrong. NZ are looking for a 10-0 tour".

    Janey mackers

    That would be a disaster

    IBF: Master of the understatement.

On the 2005 tour, the Lions didn't face any of the franchises. They played only NPC sides and the Maori team (who beat them).

And they struggled to put away those NPC teams. Aside from the Manawatu Turbos who were a division 2 team (they finished 6th of 9 in D2 that year), the biggest margin of victory was 22 points against Taranaki (who finished 9th of 10 in D1). Other margins of victory were 4 points, 14 points, 17 points, 11 points and 10 points.

Gatland has spoken about not wanting to go into the test series undercooked as has been the case in recent tours but I think this schedule really is biting off more than they can chew.

Probably shouldn't have put Canes in 2/3 bets for the weekend. Looks like it'll be burst after the first game of the weekend

Can't really be too harsh on picking them when they're 2/6 off the kicking tee!

Just got another try so my bet might scrape in in. Any of those missed kicks and I'd be sorted. Ah well.

    You got there.

...Of course I had them at -19.5 :D

Ouch. I fluked it. Or perhaps would have been very unlucky if they didn't cover it. I'm not sure.

I could only laugh when they called for a scrum under the posts with a penalty and 20 seconds left on the clock.

The disparity in the handicaps out there is pretty ridiculous when you look into it. Some bookmakers were calling it as 24, some had it as low as half that.

Think Jordie did the majority of the kicking. Those Barretts are great at a lot of things but consistent kicking isn't one of them.

Only 3/1 with PP this morning and it's Munster v Connacht i.e. at Thomond Park - that's why I wouldn't touch it.

Anyone eyeing up some bets for the Lions tour. Is 3-0 NZ the best 10/11 shot you'll ever see?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,363 ✭✭✭✭Del.Monte

NZ Barbarians to beat the Lions @ 20/1 - surely worth a few Euros?

A real David and Goliath struggle between some farm boys and the very well paid Northern Hemisphere professionals is how the NZ Herald is running with it. :D

PP have all three Barrett brothers to score a try @ 66/1 for the believers, and a Drop Goal + a Yellow Card @ 8/1 is tempting. :D

I'll be going with Julian Savea anytime try @ 13/8 and a safety bet on a draw @ 25/1. The draw served me well last week when I was able to cash out early about 10 minutes before the end.

And a disloyal bet on the Lions to win @ 7/2.

Hah! PP fails and I was prevented from cashing out early on the Draw. :D
