Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I really enjoyed it. It's a very clever game that manages to tell you everything you need to know without actually saying a word. I don't reckon it had the same mind blowing effect on me as Castlevania: SoTN did though.

You've only played it the once. The beauty of the game comes from replaying it. The developers not only made a beautifully designed game but they also designed it so that players could sequence break it and the game wouldn't get buggy. It means there's a ridiculous number of ways of beating the game by breaking the sequence of items you think you need to get through the game. Most of them you can miss out on if you are good enough. However they also managed to disguise that fact to first timers. It's why I consider it the best designed game ever made.

Did anyone ever play the Superman game on the C64? I was listening to a podcast this morning and this game just randomly popped into my mind. I haven't thought about it in years. I do remember not liking the game that much. If I remember correctly I couldn't really figure out what the hell you were supposed to do.

Was at a car boot sale yesterday for a look around. About 20 metres away, saw a large rectangular blue and yellow box sticking out of a tesco box. As I strolled towards it, I realized it was a Pikachu N64. Picked up the pace only for a young lad to get there before me. Got the console, 3 controllers and 6 games (inc Pokemon Stadium and what lookd like Ocarina) for....

    10 euro.

Apparently sales picked up in Japan because of it. Very tempted to cancel my PS4 preorder and get a WiiU then I remember I've only paid off 70 euros on it an have my new PC to pay off as well :)

That's a great price! Especially for a boxed one. You should donate it to me for eh, reasons.

It's the whole rocker schtick and the various voices he puts on that kind of bugs me, but this is the first time I've seen him so I am probably being too harsh a judge.
I did keep expecting him to suggest shutting off the power before working on a light switch though.

Getting quite annoyed with this game project at the moment. Our artist is useless and still hasn't given us any final art so in response I'm being asked if it's possible to totally change all my code to fit the art.

    I need something/someone to punch.

Only a small bit. Seemed pretty good from what I played. You'll do an awful lot of reading in the game, if you are used to japanese visual novels you will know what to expect, if not you might be shocked at how little interaction you have.

But each to their own and all that.

    Worth a quick read.

Perhaps consider them a stepping stone towards the development of more modest, down-to-earth and thematically resonant video games that are inevitably going to and actually already have started to emerge alongside the familiarly 'gamey' genres. And with the inherent choice and drama of relationships, it's a limited but sensible enough place to start. Some of them have actually been solidly written and moderately pioneering in tackling intelligent themes and characterisation that wouldn't typically make it into more mainstream titles.

That, and the creepy sexualisation of teenage girls sells crazy amounts of games in Japan.

I think this line pretty much covers it.

The first part sounds like Retr0's justification of owning Galgun

Well to be fair Hakuoki is actually a game where you play as a girl trying to chat up male Samurai.

Dating sims seem creepy, because let's face it the vast majority of them from japan are but there's some absolute gems in there two. You have to remember that these really are just novels except with background art but it gives the reader choices to make when it comes to the relationships.

The good thing about about visual novel dating sims that do get localised is that really only the good stuff makes it over here, rarely do the more deviant visual novels make it out here.

Dating sim elements are making their way it other games as well. Fire Emblem and Persona 3 and 4 have them. Persona 3 and 4 are definitely not creepy about it either and handle the relationship aspect in a very low key, mature and interesting manner. Then there's Bioware's games which have had relationship elements since Baldur's Gate. If you've played a Mass Effect game then I'm afraid to say you've already played a dating sim, albeit a very very bad dating sim that is far creepier and immature than most of the localised japanese dating sims.

If you google there's a good site with a load of localised and fan translated dating sims to try. Some I'd recommend:

Ever 17: This was made by the 999 and Virtue's Last Reward team before they made those two games. I've heard both of those games described as toned down and dumber versions of Ever 17

Higurashi: Another very famous japanese visual novel that was turned into an exceptional anime. Absolutely terrifying.

Stein's Gate: This is one for sci-fi fans. It's got a wonderful sci-fi storyline with very well researched science (prometheus this ain't). Also got turned into a wonderful anime.

Kana Little Sister: this one gets a bad name for promoting incest by people that never actually played it. It's a pretty heart breaking story but be warned the sex scenes are filthy.

    Hatoful Boyfriend: Beacause pigeons.

There's a programme on the Discovery Channel named Amish Mafia, and I can't contain myself how ludicrous that sounds. Apparently, it's based on eyewitness accounts on what this Amish mob does. Like some midget smashing up a rival's car windscreen. All the programme shows me is how Discovery Channel has fallen. Much like when Animal Planet made mermaid thing as if it was a real documentary.
