Boredom is a terrible, terrible thing.

Spare wheel on the Paj never really impressed me, thought it made her look as old as she is, considering I'd never tried to refurb/shine up a wheel before I said why not, seeing as its basically an ornament anyway (state of the tyre on it).

    IMG_4907-1.jpg

So decided to take it off and thoroughly wash it:
    IMG_5066.jpg

The results left a lot to be desired so; no remorse, nitromors:
    IMG_5068.jpg

Then, copious amounts of wet/dry sanding, polishing & buffing, and more polishing and buffing, then after that, a little more buffing.
    IMG_5073.jpg

It's not quite done yet, more polishing and buffing to be done before I'll be pleased. :pac:

are you going to have to paint it after?

are you going to have to paint it after?

Hadn't planned on really, was more thinking a little rub down with autosol every now and then should keep it right enough? Or should I clear coat them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

I was asking not telling. Honestly, I dont know if you have to paint them

If it's cleaned out to bare aluminium it would corrode fairly quickly.

I must say it looks awesome now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,854 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

Mightn't be a bad idea to clear coat it at least.

Pardon my ignorance, I really haven't a clue about paints etc :o, will the clear coat bind to the polished surface or is there further prep needed? I've an aerosol can of clear lacquer handy, will it do the job?

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,854 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

No, if there's polish or wax on the surface, the lacquer will bead and look like bubbly cheese on the surface.

You need to remove all polish and whatever else is on the surface with isopropyl alcohol or something like that.

If it's automotive lacquer, 4 - 5 LIGHT coats will be sufficient leaving about 30 mins in between each coat.

    Selling - 2007 E92 BMW 335i

    Just fancy a change?

You're mad to sell after putting the cash in to replace the two turbos imo!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,925 ✭✭✭pudzey101

changed oil + filter ( gave 30mins looking for the oil drain plug and it in me pocket the whole time!!) flushed out coolant + replaced with fresh
Cleaned IAVC , PCV valve and my vtec solenoid . checked tyres , suspension etc everything is set for winter ! :) must actually invest in some new wipers too only taught of that while writing here :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,720 ✭✭✭Hal1

Yeah a big +1 on replacing the wipers. I changed my own recently and they needed it, as they were brittle and squeaking with every pass. Now silent operation and smear free wiping.

It's a "to do" list rather than "i did" this time. Set of alloys I recently bought.

    The best one:

    331638.jpg

    The worst one:

    331639.jpg331640.jpg

To do: sanding off scratches, paint them over, put missing tyre on (pair of winters ordered).

Just wondering how much did they cost you jou?

    140. Nothing "wow" alright, but not bad, I'd say. :)

Especially it will be my secondary (winter) set.

great value with the tyres and all imo.

A nice, handy 20 minute job today, replacement of the auxiliary water pump. Symptom was luke warm cabin air at low engine rpm; the aux pump keeps water flowing through the heater matrix when the engine is turning over slowly, which is nearly all the time with my town based driving.

It also pumps coolant through the matrix when the REST button is pressed, giving you warm air when the engine is turned off. The car wasn't doing any of this and had it happen on my last 7 series so knew what it was.

On my last car, the pump was attached to the bottom of the main radiator. In the E66, it's bolted to the left shock tower.

The new pump. Basically looks like a fish tank pump.

A single bolt and three popped clips and out it came. Lost about a half cup of coolant.

    New one back in.

So today I done something to someone else's car!

My friends beloved polo, protagonist in a number of videos and cannonball chaser (new video soon relating to this) gave up the ghost on friday, not to fear though he had bought another lately that was misfiring as a replacement very cheap.

We found that a broken valve bucket (cam follower to some) was the cause and we set about taking the good head from the white polo to put onto this one, it was a wet day and with the red polo nosed into the shed we installed an f1 specification parasol...

    331774.jpg

A pic of the engine being pointed to just for confirmation..

    331773.jpg

Fast forward to much giving out about annoying exhaust manifold bolts and angle grinding the feckers out and we lifted the head.
To find that the water channels etc were not the same so were not transferable!!

We done some careful measuring and found the innards were equal so began to swap good and bad so that we replaced the worn buckets and cam from the white polo to the red, meaning the original head can return to the engine.

    331777.jpg

Here's a pic of the offending bucket...

    331776.jpg

Next week see's the engine get a timing belt, water pump and all gaskets before it makes it's first trip, to Dublin!

A special mention must go to Cian for his modeling and general humour to keep morale high :D

Had one of them on my old van. It's only purpose as far as I'm aware was to circulate coolant after you tun the engine off to prevent hotspots forming. Didn't do either of the things you mentioned afaik.

@ybfocus. If your mate ever wants any engine/gearbox VW workshop manual .pdf's to rebuild anything send me a pm with the engine/box code. I know their shockin complicated yolks :p.

Apart from main dealer, not a clue mate. Call into a gearbox specialist and ask.

I doubt it they will share their bred and butter source :D

While (few years) ago rang to one of specialist, asked that question, all what i got was - just bring your gearbox in, we will get it sorted, you cant fix gearbox yourself, thats specialist job, safety and bla bla bla... :D

Didnt thought about dealers, you recon they would sell box recon kits ?

I'd say you'd have to go to the main dealer with part numbers. You on vagcat?

I no need it YET, just trying to find out source of kits. I know they exists, as when i was working in one garage, we took off auto box off audi a6 (some fancy one) , and brought to one other garage, where i did see that gearbox overhaul kit (was packed like in pizza box, all gears, synchros, seals was sealed in vacuum packets. )
I cant ask them now, as that garage doesnt exist now.

I am not on vagcat, I am on myturbodiesel ;)
