I was actually mentioning this to my girlfriend yesterday actually, wondering when It would become un-PC to celebrate Mother's/Father's Day. :D

In fairness there is also Father's Day so these Hallmark holidays don't just target female parents.

    Yes. Try International Womens Day.

I see no problem with celebrating mothers at least one day a year, they deserve it, it is a hard job.

The way I see it, everyone has a mother, so it's not about differentiating between women who have children and those who don't, it's about celebrating our one.

Yeh to me mother's day is about my mother and grandmother and all the other mothers in my life, like friends, cousins, aunts, close friends' mothers.
The fact I'm not a mother is irrelevant!

There are lots of mothers that don't deserve to be celebrated.

    Yep.

And? Not every holiday will suit everyone. And that's ok.
There are days for all sorts of things. I wouldn't be celebrating International Nurses Day for example.

But as a general rule, celebrating mothers is a positive thing I think.

... that Littlewoods ad, where the woman's school reunion is coming up so Littlewoods helps her pretend she has cute kids, a handsome husband and a beautiful home. Because you can't even think of going to your school reunion without all those boxes ticked...

Well, it deflects from the real issues surrounding FGM prosecutions, so I'd imagine that's one reason it was mentioned anyway.

Sadly this procedure is carried out by women...
The procedure is traditionally carried out by an older woman with no medical training. Anaesthetics and antiseptic treatment are not generally used and the practice is usually carried out using basic tools such as knives, scissors, scalpels, pieces of glass and razor blades...

"Mama tied a blindfold over my eyes. The next thing I felt my flesh was being cut away. I heard the blade sawing back and forth through my skin. The pain between my legs was so intense I wished I would die."
Waris Dirie, UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador and spokesperson on FGM

The People’s Debate returns Wednesday 2nd April 10PM. The motion for debate...

''The liberation of women in Ireland has yet to be accomplished''

    A two-hour-long debate with an all-female audience...should be a good one.

Yes, and she doesn't tick the good education, satisfying career, vibrant social life, useful volunteering, absorbing hobbies. Because those things would be about her as a person in her own right rather than in relation to how well she looks after people and how good she, and they, look.

And the worst thing is, this narrative is present right across the advertising industry. It boggles my mind how sexist the industry is, towards both men and women.

There seemed to be quite a dirverse represention of Irish society there, I'm not sure there was such a clean cut division...one group against another... there seems to be quite a crossover of opinions present in society regardless of religious positions...
I thought the two black womens perspectives were interesting...

Every woman who spoke against abortion had seats reserved for them, they were ushered in by the producer, 5 mins before it started, placed among the rest of us and they call got called on to talk.

The poor ladies from TFMR were moved to sit behind 4 of them by the floor staff.

So much for impartial  Disgusted to read that, I would have expected more of TV3.

That lobby group will lodge complaints against the station and the show with the Broadcast Authority to make sure they get air time. They are very litigious.

I need feminism because these people still exist

Also because even in countries with a more humane law on abortion, it's still necessary to get out and counter-protest 40 Days For Life nutters.

Jesus that's a bit much, it's like a still image from a Carry On film.

You think that's bad? You probably haven't seen the "butthole" one. (Should go without saying--and how f.ucked up is this--but this ad is most certainly NSFW: http://thoughtcatalog.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-30-at-9-59-30-pm.png?w=584&h=386)

Janey Mac, I must have read the wrong feminist bible, because I love men and women and shock horror want equal rights for both without stripping men of their self esteem :pac:

Thwts awful about the tv3 debate Morag, but I'm not surprised. That station seems to veer more towards tabloid journalism.

Ok that one is so pathetic it's even funny. The said thing is that adds like this enable them to charge at least 50% more than they should for the crap they sell. Them and A&F should write a manual how to sell to idiots. They mastered their target market to perfection.

But what about the Diet Coke ad? Etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭Jenneke87

For me the diet coke ad always felt like the joke was on the girls in the end, and is far far more tasteful and humorous than the ads quoted.

American Apparel ads reference porn, fetish, and possibly nonconsensual voyeur type of photography and that is objectionable on so many levels I actually find it creepy.

Coke, lynx and similar ads are just stupid. Well lynx at least have a talent for parody. It slightly annoys me how Diet Coke ads are always shown during drivel like Grey's Anatomy or Revenge. I yet have to see one during True Detective or News. I can't even remember them during The Good Wife and I won't hold my breath to see one during The Game of Thrones either. It's irrational in a way but I just get the feeling that it reinforces the image of young women as airheads a bit more.
