To be honest I'm more impressed by his wife than his tight rope walk.

So, supposedly he's announcing his next big event in a few mins. Ffs, would he not just quit while he's ahead!

    And safe

In fairness, there was absolutely nothing safe about it

Redbull surely missed a trick here? He's no Baumgartner :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,148 ✭✭✭PizzamanIRL

So what do you think was more impressive? This or the Baumgartner jump from space a few months ago?

I'm probably edging towards this because it was all his control.

Same - and for the same reason. The space jump was unbelievable but he had so much tech backup whereas Nic had to rely on himself only.

Tough call. Both amazing events to watch. This was way more nerve wrecking though. At least Baumgartner wasn't babbling on about your man jesus during his descent

    *spoliler alert*

there was everything safe about it, Ive never seen something so sterile in my life.

all the bits hanging off the bottom of the rope were counter balancing it and set so that even in the worst possible circumstances nothing could possibly go wrong

the balance bar, negated most of the risk

the orange rope under him all the way, no doubt for safety of some sort and they are just the things I noticed.

meh tbh the only way he would posibly fall is if he MASSIVELY freaked out but that was never going to happen.

I get the counter balance equip but wouldn't consider it safety equipment by a long shot. As for the orange rope, not sure if its what you're referring to but if it was the line running parallel beneath him, that was for the camera equipment. Could see the cameras shooting along every now and again.

I know it'sa stupid question but I'm trying to figure out how did they get all that rope across the canyon to begin with

I wont be I havent trained for it, but I do do things which a majority of people call crazy, which are not to me and others like me who do the same .also watch motor/bike sports involving REAL risk and get back to me

the tour de france is coming up, watch the mountain descents and get back to me

They flew a tow line across the canyon with a helicopter, put it through a pulley and then hauled the tightrope across that way.

Was your heart beating fast when you watched it? I'll guess yes and that's because you knew it was dangerous and if he fell he was ****ed. Having a piss sitting down is safe. Walking across the grand canyon on a tightrope isn't.

Think there's a bit of a difference between falling off your bike in the Tour de France and falling off your rope while crossing the Grand Canyon.

watch the tour de france when they are racing down the mountains @50mph/80km/hr+ they can get up to 100km/hr+ on closed road though, the lucky bastards

Give us a few of your more riskier things to excite us!

Of course it's a risky venture, and there's very little people on this planet who can cross that gorge within short notice. Winds are gusting and he has to control his footwork on a two inch wire for a quarter of mile. A lot of us wouldn't be able to do that on a painted strip! Of course the chances of Wallenda falling were greatly reduced given that he has done this so many times, but his great-grandfather died doing this and we would have been just as well-practiced. There are few activities riskier than skywalking to be fair

They have a brake on the bike to slow down. Your man can't control speed of wind to knock him over, human emotions that will make him nervous and shake or a little slip of foot and he's gone.

He was connected to nothing. If he fell, he was freefalling to the ground. How was it safe?

k, I doubt it's something I could do and it has an element of risk but at the same time I wouldn't consider the risk factor as high, bike crash versus walking unharnessed across the GC...one may result in broken limbs, possibly fatal but the other is certain death.
If you said base jumping or free climbing I might have seen your point though.

They have a brake on the bike to slow down.

and he has his feet to decide his speed
Your man can't control speed of wind to knock him over, human emotions that will make him nervous and shake or a little slip of foot and he's gone.

but he has a big bar to counter balance with
He was connected to nothing. If he fell, he was freefalling to the ground. How was it safe?

he was never going to fall :o

unless he would freak out, but like I say he trained for it. 3/4 of the trsaining is psychological
