Would it matter? As Unkel pointed out it has been off the road for over 3 years.
Has to be a reason for that.

There are a number of reasons that it could possibly have been off the road for the last few years and they are not all sinister. One possible reason is that it has passed through the hands of various dealers who have been trying to sell it for a wildly unrealistic price (like this one)

Either way, I'm not trying to defend it. Apart from the NCT thing the asking price is nuts. Even though it probably did cost an awful lot of money new, there is just no market for big passanger jeeps like that in Ireland now.

But as I said - I do like it. If they halved their asking price and I could get my hands on the money, I'd take a good look at it.

You wouldn't want to drive it in sunny weather anyway.

Its made for the pisstake cruise across the country / Europe. Seems thats what the current owner used it for. I have to say 3 or 4 on a trip in that could be a bit of craic. Wheels need something though.
At 1500 or so, someone could snap it up for that purpose. At current asking, I cant see it.

Is the SClass merc prone to electrical gremlins. Yes it is unfortunately a lot of mercs of the early 2000s still had a lot of issues so anyone buying one of those would want to have their eyes open.

RE the lack of an Auto box - I wouldn't be that puzzled by that. Rightly or wrongly a lot of Irish people still prefer a manual.

RE it being on donedeal before - Do you know how much they looked for it at the time ?

No idea , under 20k though or i wouldnt have seen it at the time , had no nct when i was looking at it either which put me off even looking , was at paddy connollys at the time afaik and reapeared at a dublin 12 dealer too

Jaysus that's cheap. NCT is out 4 months. What's wrong with it?

I'd say just the Irish phobia of €1800 tax

Trust me paying high tax is a right pain in the hole but not many can or would justify it. I wouldn't say an Irish phobia of paying it more like stupid powers that be placing such a high tax on cars.

It'll be bought for smaller money too, I haven't seen it though.

I'm paying 3.0 tax on my Luxobarge. The first question that people always ask about my car is about the tax, and when I tell them they think I'm mad!

Yes, the tax is a pain, but I'm driving a cruiser with all the toys and thanks to the lpg kit it's very cheap on fuel - financial equivalent to a 40mpg petrol car and Zero depreciation

I'm paying the same without the LPG conversion ;).

That's not to say it not ridiculous to have such a high tax on cars. But no point in getting into it as it's been done to death on here.

    Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Cl500 - 4950 Euro on DoneDeal.

Description includes "Sold as she stands to clear - no warranty." .... avoid like the plague?

love the thread... mirrors my philosophy.

If the dealer isn't trusting the car enough to provide a warranty then I'd stay away from it.

Just looking into that 750i above, it really is mind boggling how bad things have gotten with regards these kinds of cars in this country; it could easily pass as a 2-3 year old car.

Googling the mobile number brings up John Keniry Motors in Youghal, yet no mention of a dealer. Also no registration to work off. Could be still worth a look.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,170 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

Jesus.... how much was that new? Must have been north of €150k. That's some serious depreciation.

Prices were notably higher in '05 so indeed the base price would have been around the €150k mark. Even for an '05 7, with those miles it's going very very cheap.

So what? It's irrelevant. Demand for such cars is limited, hence this thread!

This car seems sensibly priced, and should attract a decent level of interest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,170 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

Buy it and sell it to the UK or mainland Europe for a profit and reclaim the VRT?

Or, the dealer just wanted rid of the car. Cheap quick sale with no comeback, trade sale.

Edit: dealer could also be afraid of supplying costly parts should they go in the near future. Might know absolutely nothing about those cars. They are rare.

Walked over to have a look at lunchtime as is close to the office.

quite tired car, back seats very worn and 'wood' centre console on back seats scratched badly to the point of coming off, very bad cosmetically.

driver door not quite closing flush, and has lots of chips on edge (banging off walls/other cars)

There was no price tag in the window, I did not speak to anyone to see whether was still for sale once I had seen the car.

Well, that's my theory out the window. A poorly maintained car like that could break a man. Probably the reason its for sale in the first place.
