Best of luck but its hard to see it long term.

There are a lot of "ordinary" pubs in Salthill already so it's hard to see how a business paying that amount in rent and rates plus overheads and wages could survive unless they're offering something different. Very good food would be a start, brunch at the weekend would be nice. I could see something like Market Lane in Cork (http://www.marketlane.ie) working very well there. IMHO, in order to survive, the Bal needs to be a destination, not just another pub.

I wish them the best of luck, anyone starting a business is very brave.

There are also a few exceptionally unique pubs in Salthill most notably O'Connor's and Oslo (....and less notably Trends). I'm fond of The Cottage also.

I'm guessing it's a share of the Trends and Cheers/Holiday Hotel clientele he is hoping for during the day at least. I think he may be able to get a bit of a night time crowd alright if he can keep doing what he did in his previous pubs with a bit of tweaking. The feckin rates are crazy though.

On another topic: A certain ex-locals pub on Dominick Street that transformed itself into something completely different some time ago seems to have a very closed look to it recently.

McAlindens, no real surprise. Wasnt exactly satisfying a major need in the pub market.

Nope. And I don't want to be naming anything till I find out more. There may be a reason.

Places where old timers can hang out and feel comfortable might be a bigger market segment than you'd think.

Newsagent/Convenience store where the chemist was beside Richardsons. Always thought it a good spot. Will be nice to get change again from a real person as opposed to the 'slot machine' it's closest competitor provides.

Wasn't this Cards n Candy back in the day? Remember getting smokes in there before heading down the town on a Saturday night ...must be 20 years ago , the wheel turns full circle..

That's right. C+C got screwed when they closed our park for years in order to turn it into whatever it is now.

Colm Quinn is opening a new 'state of the art' BMW garage in Galway. Including...'a roof-top putting green for our customers.'
From today's SBP (not Ross O'Carroll-Kelly).

Looks like Mixed Greens have given up on the unit in Forster St. I've been wondering for a while, 'cos it seemed a bit blank at night. 4pm Friday it was closed. No signs on the windows, though.

Lots of cafes have tried in that unit. Not sure why it always seems to fail - being on the road to the coach station IMHO should be a gold mine for it, if someone could get the product mix (or whatever cafes call it) right.

Is that not the one that's been opened on the Tuam Road for about 3 months?

Jaysus time flies. I know the mobile showroom was open for ages while they were building the main one alright, but wouldn't have thought it was open that long!

Yes. They've expansion plans for 2015, which was in the paper.

That one is definitely closed alright. The unit is up on daft.ie for rent, 2,500 per month if i remember correctly.

It's a funny enough spot, you'd expect good passing trade, but in reality, it seems most people just pass by in a hurry to get to where ever they want to go.

The now sole owner of licence wants to appeal to a wider audience..

Source - man himself. It's going to be relaunched in march afaik.

Sh*te, used to love The Cottage :(

The thing is, they changed their menu completely last year. I always loved going in there for a bite to eat, the fish and chips were great and I know friends used to rave about the burgers, you used to get a seriously good meal. But then they brought in this new menu that was all tapas style small bites, and it was just disappointment central, the portions were starter sized but priced like mains. I know a few people who stopped going there after that, and I'd have to say myself I stopped going there as often as I used because I was so disappointed with the food, so I honestly think that new menu sunk them.

That's is a real shame. Used to regularly meet friends there every month but then they changed from having loads of craft beers to being more wine-oriented. We took our business down the road to the Oslo so they're still getting our money but the atmosphere isn't half as nice.

I noticed the beer selection getting worse alright, they got in Heineken on tap as well, and not half what they used to have on bottle either.

It's further out the Tuam Rd past Monaghan's Skoda showroom - they were trading from a portacabin for a while - the new show room is now open.
