I was with Ken on his viewpoint - what's the point of playing if you don't aim to win? Really enjoyed the section though throughout.

But I don't think that Ken ever gave Ciaran credence for his argument. He ranted on but never debated the points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,795 ✭✭✭dulux99

I thin Ciaran just trumped him when Ken went on about why England shouldn’t be so fearful of Brazil – to which Ciaran just said – “but you want them to be fearful of Colombia?” (not exact wording of course)

Either way it was good to hear an actual discussion between the core members on something they disagree with. Doesn’t happen very often

Thought it was pointless bickering for a match that really didn't matter. Both teams were through and rested their first team. The media and crystal balling is ridiculous.

The 'So Fresh, So Clean' and Ken's sheet story audiobed is top drawer

The media (of all types) need something to fulfill the content requirements. The football isnt interesting enough and the analysis is very repetitive so they all try different angles, with this match there was one obvious angle as daft as it was.
Personally I agree with Ken and Ciaran in general.

Just listening to Fridays show today, but funny listening to Kens rant about England assuming they'll get through the next games all while saying they could get spain in the semis and assuming spain will stroll past Russia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Ken obviously was jonesing from the laughing gas that he was so grumpy about people 'rating teams being easy or difficult' before doing it himself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,138 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Yeah, I mean you got to want the weaker teams, especially in the early knock out rounds.

Goes without saying that, as its a tournament, you arent guarenteed a result against any team; but id fancy Irelands chances against Columbia and then Sweden vs Japan and then Brazil, if we were there.

I think Ken had a narrative in his head that England are counting their chickens and was sticking with that no matter what.

Not often that it happens, but id be saying fair play to Murph on this one.

Also lol at Murph saying Kildare have no chance to win this match and that playing in Newbridge is the pinacle of their season.

    Fcuk you Murph.

Feels so good next to the skin Eoin.

Im very much enjoying the WC coverage. We get our hit of Ken, but its not the entire pod. Lots of different voices being brought in for contrasting takes on different teams.

Getting Eoins view as the 'everyman' and Murph is standing up to Ken now and again.

I wish the regular football season was more like this.

They should also be sending Ken to PL matches to keep the sound beds rolling in, judging by the quantity produced in the last 2.5 weeks alone.

I also like the fact that, unlike their most recent PL coverage, Ken isn't fixated on manager quotes, and doesn't seem to be concentrating on any one player either. The PL coverage got very tiresome last year with the constant Mourinho-bashing. There is a lot more variety to the WC coverage.

last season's PL season was a bore fest though - it was obvious early on that Man City were going to walk it and an incredibly boring United team were going to finish comfortably in second.

Even relegation was decided earlier than usual.

The manager's personalities were pretty much the only thing of interest

Id have to disagree with you; i didnt find it as boring as that. That top and bottom 3 were decided didnt mean there werent interesting matches, imo.

Also, if you look at coverage of Ireland, how much time did Ken spend on MON?

I take your point that maybe the title and relegation battles didnt provide as much to discuss as in other years, but i think Ken was a little too quick to jump on manager analysis.

If they are struggling for PL content to the degree that manager analysis is the next best option, then they should be bringing in experts on other leagues more regularly, so they arent as dependant on PL coverage.

Ya that's certainly true, but I thought they could have looked for other angles, rather than going over the same topics relentlessly. Just off the top of my head, they could have looked at the evolution of Guardiolas tactics from his Barca days and even, to a larger extent, how the Premier League has evolved tactically (and I wouldn't be big on tactics, but some insight would be good). They could have looked at the financial aspect of the league (Sky deal, etc.) and how that is impacting on clubs, lack of Irish players in the league, etc.

These are just random ideas, and maybe they would be best-suited to one-off, special shows, but I feel there is definitely scope for more robust analysis/insight. All that being said, I'm a big fan and definitely feel I am getting value for my fiver! :D

I'd agree with that... I'd like to hear more on La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga etc

But more than just the goings on at Juve, Munich, Barcelona and Madrid

Lol. Not sure if that's sarcasm law :)

Ken's take on LoI turned out to be a load of bollox last time iirc. Be good to get someone in to go through it regularly enough though.

Ken barely mentions Juve, even in the years they got to the CL final he barely mentions them. If they play Real Madrid, Juve will get about 15 seconds of airtime and that will be some reference to calciopoli or drug taking. Agree with the rest though. A Ronaldo goal celebration will get about 10 times more airtime than juve winning the league or getting to the CL final.
I like ken, but definitely agree that he's really limited to the top 6 in England and Barca, PSG, Madrid and Bayern, would be good if he branched out a bit.

To be fair, for big games they usually get someone who knows what they're on about to talk about the teams - eg Sid Lowe, James Horncastle or whoever from the football podcast/journalism circuit.

At least I think they do.
It's hard to remember when you're listening to four football podcasts 2-5 times a week each.

They never have Horncastle on which is a pity as he is really good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Horncastle is fairly locked into the TF pods id say, including almost co-hosting the Football Italia one, so maybe isnt as available as he used to be for other non-TF pods.

They should keep Ken in transit at all times, him getting irritated at the patience of people waiting for that man to put away his sombrero was gas.

Ken's right shoot outs are more fun when a lot of they are missed.

Very much enjoyed the Neymar chat on today's pod. A few of my favourite lines from it were

"He's like Prince Joffrey" Fair comparison imo.

"In football, Richie, the ****heads have won" from Murph.

Murph is quite good at filling in for Eoin, he has a nice way about him.
