Had a real go at reading from the start if the thread but had to give up.

Getting an error "Not available in your country" type of thing when trying to add a free book from the Barnes and Noble website. Irish Credit card registered as default payment method.

Can you get ebooks from the library on these things ?

As far as I am aware you can't. It's not available in our region. You can get books on Easons.ie or any site that offers ePub format eBooks. Alternatively you can root it and get the Kindle app and get books from Amazon too, but I haven't done this.

I was able to get free books on my Nook by ensuring that the registered address on the B&N website was a UK one. Just picked an address at random. It seems for free books, it doesn't check the credit card details, just the shipping address.

What other sites do people use for free e-books?

I haven't yet used this site but a friend recommended it on FB. Looks good and all free and legit.

Thanks, already checked these out. 'free-ebooks.net' has some interesting books but you have to buy a VIP membership to download them.

The Barnes & Noble site has a great selection but it's not very user friendly. If you search a popular genre like 'crime' it will have thousands of books. If you're on page 42 for example and go to select a book cover to read about it, you then have to go right back to page 1 again when you're finished as it doesn't remember where you last were

Right mouse click over the cover and select open in new tab. You'll save your location that way. :)

Or on a mouse click with the scroll wheel and it opens in a new tab anyway.

touch the right hand top corner and you can create a book mark for yourself there, that should work

Got one of these from Argos UK through Parcel Motel,€41 all in.

Does anyone have a link for an easy (ish!) explanation of how to root it?

    Cheers!

Tis very simple. Download Nookmanger form here (direct link), unzip and put on a micro sd card. Put micro sd into nook, turn it on and then follows these pics.

Is the rooting really worth the loss of battery life etc? I found the only real benefit of rooting was the ease of getting material onto the device for reading (email, dropbox etc.). With having a smartphone etc. i can never see myself using most of the other features and i found that it killed my battery life.

Still delighted with the purchase but I found myself just going back to stock and using Calibre to convert and transfer books/magazines etc.

I haven't really used it unrooted because I did it straight away but with apps killed when not in use and wifi off my battery lasts aaagggeeeesss.

    Agree with Loadedscream.

This is an e-reader, it does one thing and it does it well. Having Android apps, browsing, and chat would spoil it.

I agree mostly. I mainly rooted mine because it's my first android system and wanted to mess around with it. If I want email or facebook my smart phone does it better. However I do like the drop box functionality because it means I can get a book on any pc when I travel and not need a cable to get it on my Nook.

Does the Nook have to be rooted in order to change the screensaver on it? I downloaded one and sent it to my Nook but there's no sign of it anywhere! :o

Nope. Just put it in the "screen" folder as a .jpg and it will work fine. You then need to go into settings and Screen and change the selection from Author to Screen. You can even put in a load of pics and it will change them everytime you lock the screen.

Just tried that but it didn't work. The JPEGs are there in my library but when I click on them I get the message 'This Nook cannot read this file. It may be an unsupported format'. Any way round this?

It could be something wrong with the image file you are using. I don't know if it needs images to be a particular size or colour depth or anything.

You could try downloading some that other people have used and see if any of them work, there's some good ones at http://www.nook-look.com/nookfiles/popular

That's where I got them from! I downloaded 'The Far Side'.

It's easier to set up a new folder in the screensaver folder and drop all your files to there.

Maybe use the more recent Far Side set: http://www.nook-look.com/Nookfiles/view/399

So: \screensavers\farside\ < extract the images into there

Then in settings, pick Screensaver, and 'farside' should appear as an option.

Now, the biggest pain is that on the Simple Touch, the 'wake up your nook' bar actually covers up the gag text for a lot of the Far Side images, so I batch formatted all my images to leave a blank space for the wake up message.

If you like, I can upload that image set (200-ish cartoons) here when I'm with my nook later on today, to save you the hassle.

No prob - I'll post it over in the Nook tweak thread, to avoid clogging up the BA one...

As far as I know, for screensaver images to appear on your nook, you must put each image in its own separate folder with the same name as the image.

Not at all. I have 70 of the far side comics in one folder all with different names and a new one comes up everytime I lock the screen.
