I think FM transmitters might be making a bit of a comeback. My wife's one year old car doesn't have an auxiliary input at all now, they're probably assuming you'll use Bluetooth or a phone for everything. So she's back to a good old FM transmitter on 87.5 to run her old iPod.

Here are most of the "free radio" stations I picked up on my car radio over the course of the weekend.

    FM:

    91.6 - Phever - fleetingly on Friday

92.0 - Retro FM - only on yesterday

93.3 - ABC 80s - At one stage, it had an RDS displaying KCR FM. What was that about?

98.4 - The 90s Network - Ever since I manually (and painfully!) tuned into this frequency and saved it, I have been able to pick it up with variable reception!

99.5 - Picked this one up this afternoon. No ID, just continuous oldies: some '70s, but mainly '60s. Stopped later in the afternoon with possibly a blank carrier (had frequency already saved, so cannot be 100% about that bit). Any ideas? It wasn't a relay or stream of Energy Power AM by the way (does not mean it's not connected of course!).

105.7 - The Beach, and earlier in the weekend playing oldies - one of its alter egos I would imagine.

    MW:

1440 kh (or 208 metres) - Energy Power AM - there was some live broadcasting yesterday - with Paul Murray, who else! I don't think it was on Friday or Saturday.

I heard that station on 99.5FM yesterday evening again. They were playing a mixture of songs from the 1960s and 1970s. Eventually, I heard a jingle identifying themselves as Nostalgia Radio.

I have been listening to this online this evening. It is definitely interesting. Radio Anabel is one of those stations I missed out on at the time, and I actually don't think I heard the dulcet tones of Peter Madison before...although I was aware of him for years! Another of those smooth-voiced Englishmen that cropped up a lot on Dublin pirates during the first half of the 1980s!

103.6 would be Radio 4 I believe with the C204 PI, from Llanddona (same site as 89.8 and 99.4). On one occasion last year 103.6 was the strongest R4 in Cork out of a selection of 94.1, 94.3, 104.0 and 104.9):

Correct, it was R4, I realised after the dinner but was too tired to correct my post 😂

FM104 sounding awful this morning, completely distorted. Possibly over modulated signal.

I heard that myself on the way to work. They apologised a number of times for it, and the Alarm Clock dropped their kids feature saying they’d do it tomorrow instead. It was certainly … loud! For a moment I thought they had gone back to the Omnia days!

Interesting. I did not know that Chris and George were involved with Magic 103.

Chris Barry was breakfast on Magic followed by Peter Madison for mid morning (with Bob Gallico).

All of the 'ABC' news team had programmes on Magic varying from chat to music.

Those three turned up in various Dublin pirate stations. Besides Radio Nova and Magic 103, here are some other stations they were involved with:

Chris Barry - Capitol Radio (one in town from the mid 1970s) and Q102

Peter Madison - Capitol Radio (short-lived albums-oriented station from Milltown in 1982) and Radio Anabel

Bob Gallicoe: Q102, Energy103 and Treble TR

Today around the south-east of Dublin, you can add the following:

    94.3 FM - relay of All 80s

    105.7 FM - The Beach

What is that muck on 91.6 in Dublin - sounds like the strem receiver is a 2008 Nokia N52 plugged into a rig!

Sounds worse than Hot FM did

were you able to get an ID on this in the end?

Wasn't 91.6 used on weekends by the dance station Phever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,715 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

That's right - particularly Fridays. Recently there have been relays of Cork's Kiss FM on 91.6 over part of the weekends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,684 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

that's correct, but the relay of phever and company generally seems to have decent audio from what i can gather, i haven't heard it myself as i am not in the area so can't confirm it but it is just what i have gathered from here.

the description of what was on yesterday sounded quite different though, but it is possible it is the relay.

I heard some of it this evening online: Declan Meehan on Radio Nova and (presumably) David Lyons on Sunshine. I think I also briefly heard Robbie Dale as well. Did anyone else hear any of these recordings this evening?

Anyone know, I got a DAB radio from Argos, but when I scan on it I do not get anything, should I be seeing FreeDAB ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,114 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Depends where your are. Signal has improved in Dublin but there may still be black spots.
