That's why I have an FM transmitter and antenna on standby along with a petrol generator. In the case of nuclear war, or the Zombie apocalypse, at least the neighbours will be able to listen to Anorak Hour repeats.

Seriously though ...the Caroline site or freq won't be re-purposed in the current situation. There are probably better 'on continent' options that could be employed or re-deployed ... if anyone thought it would help. Unfortunately, with the pace at which this conflict could develop, I think radio info services might not be a high priority... although I have seen evidence of Ham operators finding and jamming russian military ops frequencies to frustrate the invasion effort.

Just goes to show the old mediums are better just needed an update and not sell out to internet services that can be stopped with a singles cable knocked out ...DAB and FM are there for entertainment purposes (not knocking them as I am on both) but every country should have a main AM / SW back up freq just incase it's needed ..A s for fuel don't get me started another thread !!!!!!

I came across a few pirates on my travels in Dublin today

    92.0 Retro Radio

    98.4 90s Network

    99.5 Galaxy Kildare

    103.0 Energy Ratoath

    104.2 Storm NE

    107.1 RetroNow

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,031 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

What is interesting about that pirate scan around Dublin is that the last four, i.e. the majority, were all broadcasting from outside Dublin!

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭DublinsABC

Was that Easy Radio I heard today testing on 88.1 ..Strong single but no RDS ..Also heard Energy 1395 / Retro 92 /Galaxy 99.5 /90's network /ABC 80's 93.3

I picked up all of the above in my travels during the course of the weekend with the exception of whatever was on 88.1 FM. By manually tuning, I managed to pick up The 90s Network on 98.4 - its signal is weak around Dublin 16. Kildare's Galaxy 99.5 had a very strong signal yesterday in east Meath and west Dublin. I could also easily pick up Meath's RetroNow on 107.1 around those areas. On Saturday, I found ABC 80s signal on 93.3 was not great around Dublin 16, but was a bit better in the Sandford/Ranelagh area.

Unusually, Retro FM on 92.0 FM had a live broadcast yesterday evening with Mike Doyle. It was being relayed on 1395 kh as well.

Easy Radio are listed as having a temporary license run from April to June on 88.1 (weekends maybe?).

    From mediumwave .info -

"Energy power AM will be testing on 1440 khz – 208 metres on Thursday 17 march.

If successful we will move permanently from1395 khz to1440 khz.

Between 400 and 500 watts of carrier power."

    Apparently from 2pm .

The old frequency of the legendary Radio Luxembourg - 208 metres!

  • Registered Users Posts: 599 ✭✭✭Oscarziggy

Yes , and a quiet one too .Be great to have it alive again .

I hear Radio Seabreeze on 1395khz in the evenings with fading .

1440khz making the trip to the south west coast of Wales.

XHDATA D-808 in the garden -- a little better with the Tecsun loop .

Good to hear 1440 khz alive again

I will have to do a bit of manual tuning on my car radio when I get a chance!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,031 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

It turned out today that my car picked it up by doing auto tuning on Medium Wave - no manual intervention required. It was booming out loud and clear!.......It also tunes in very easily on the kitchen radio. I would say that the tuning is much easier on the kitchen radio than Energy AM's previous frequency of 1395 kh.

Just tuned into 1440Khz 208 Meters Excellent signal and superb audio. Well done everybody at Energy AM

Interestingly Clonmellon Community Radio in Westmeath who have been online since it's inception has now added a low powered FM outlet on 96.3.

In Dublin despite the end of the 6 Nations the ref link transmitter is still on the air on 96mhz.

Has this station recently got some kind of license to broadcast on FM, or has it gone pirate, or is there another scenario I haven't thought of? Just curious!

Mid-December 2021? Why now? Just curious.

The sheet I had it written on got buried before Christmas with the chaos.

Stations I picked up today at various points while driving around Dublin:

    FM:

91.6 - Phever - seems to be stronger than previously around Dublin 16.

    93.3 - ABC 80s - reception was very patchy

98.4 - The 90s Network - also patchy reception except around north Dublin where it was better

99.5 - Galaxy (from Kildare) - particularly strong around north and west Dublin, and non-existent in Dublin 16.

107.1 - RetroNow (from Meath) I presume - was playing dance music - patchy

    MW:

1440 kh (or 208 metres) - Energy Power AM - reception varying between good and excellent in different parts

Incidentally, I picked up some speech and music sporadically on 94.3 - I would imagine that's a temporary license which was mentioned previously on this thread.

the 94.3 that @Declan A Walsh mentioned is IDing as “Family Radio”.

Seems to be a community station with a lot of African content and music. Interesting that there’s no sign of them on the BAI website. Heard some live presentation earlier and they announced they were based in d24.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,031 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I'm pretty sure they are on a temporary license. They are based in Tallaght.

Incidentally, for the first time in possibly two months, I heard something today on 105.7 FM. It has no ID or RDS but I heard an eclectic mix of songs from the '60s and '70s, and possibly '80s. It was largely adult-oriented pop music. I'm guessing Star1057 or something from that stable. Unless of course, there is a new player on 105.7 FM. Anybody know?

What is on 94.3 FM? Massively overmodulated, very difficult to make out what is being said or music being played. Are there any technical standards imposed by the BAI for these stations, Audio quality and levels have been awful all weekend as far as I can hear.

Yeah yeah yeah DJ Poison playin the wicked tunes all night....

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,087 ✭✭✭✭Losty Dublin

There are standards, yeah. Transmission equipment needs to be installed and fitted by professional trade firms and named at application stage by aspirant stations. There are basic minimum criteria for studios as well which are lighter for temps than for full time broadcasters, but nonetheless they should be adhered to.

As it happens, it's unclear within some of the informed sources that I know pf as to who is engineering Family Radio. You could do worse than to contact the operator and let them know that they sound rough. By the sounds of it they aren't clued up and they may appreciate the feedback from Joe Public.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,644 ✭✭✭Infoanon

Open to correction but from memory there's lots of emphasis on logging and recording access to the TX but there is nothing about eg having a compressor in the audio chain.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I think my experience this evening is a perfect example of how streaming can’t replace broadcast. I’ve been trying to stream a station on my phone while travelling and it has rebuffered about 7 or 8 times so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2 Loveradio

I’m sure this is been said but the DAB Dublin service is been picked up incredibly well in the Dundalk/north Monaghan area (which is strange as it’s the Dublin service).

just after drogheda on the M1 heading north it comes in and stays, maybe a silly question but are the guys beaming the service into Dublin from north Louth?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,313 ✭✭✭Antenna

No sign of them last weekend, at least when I tried at night. Hopefully it's back this weekend
