Actually was very close to hitting bag of players in front.

Lovely to see Mcilroy play well on a links - this is a lad who won the west of Ireland twice at 15 and 16.

This daft notion that he hasn't the game for The Open - off the wall stuff.

Left himself a tough putt for birdie but makes it to join the leaders. Looking good at this early stage.

Lovely round from McIlroy - heads the leaderboard at -7. Michael Hoey and Darren Clarke having a good day too. Great to see three Irish on the first day of the leaderboard.

Delighted to see Ricardo Gonzalez up near the top. I followed him around at Fota for a few holes and he seemed like a nice guy.

Just noticed this has a single tee start - how does Ivor manage to go for a pee or get a bite to eat?!?

Rory, iron off the first, pulls it 40 yards left.

please don't let this be the standard Rory second round

Rory's got that Friday feeling already

McILroy would do your head in. 6 over today.

McIlroy is now 7 over and in danger of missing the cut if he keeps playing like this. Only one shot inside the cut line at present and still has four holes to play.

He has no fight in him at all, if he's having a bad day he has a big score, is it that hard to grind out a score?

Hitting a lot of 3/4 irons. Thinking about next week already?
Pulling lots of shots. Very hard to watch.

Has anybody any thoughts as to what is going on in his hesd? It is more than a coincidence at this stage with his second rounds.

    It's the caddys fault

Bad second rounds seem to happen a lot for Rory, but this really is woeful. :(

He just doesn't have the toughness of the top players to dig it out. Most players scramble to 74 when playing bad, McIlroy shoots a 78. Terrible waste of talent in the last 2 years. He'll be back winning soon no doubt but he's after wasting 2 of the best years of his career.

It's been a tough day in Aberdeen. Looks like the cut line may go to +2. Very bunched field, so it should be a good weekend.

Only two groups left on the course and the cut is going to be +2. 78 players will make it through, so should be a busy weekend. Lowry and Hoey part of a large group tied for 8th on 2 under.

Rory shot +7 yet lies in 35th or so after his super round yesterday.

He is a bi-polar golfer lately

14 shot difference between yesterday and today - ye gods!

Good thing is with a good weekend he can still make a challenge

A +7 on Friday would usually mean a plane ride home!

Rory seems to be playing better today. Look at the following stats for his "freaky Fridays"... Definitely a pattern alright :D

I see Damien McGrane had an 8 on the 18th to go from level par to +4. Any idea what happened!

I think you would have to fancy Justin Rose for this tournament. Playing very nicely.

Nice to see Irish players McGrane, Phelan and Thornton all going well in Russia.

    And Philip Walton.

Delighted for Philip Walton - always felt sorry for him, the way his career fell away, but would love to see him get a good run on the Seniors tour.

Damian McGrane had a great finish in Russia yesterday - tied 6th, and has just started with a par on the first today.
