A lot depends on how far away the outside block is. If leasing is not an option the to expand locally purchasse is the only option. Denis Brosnan made the point after buying Golden Vale and all anaylist were of the opinion he overpayed that '' you often have to pay over the top for the farm next to you''.

You have to remember it is lifestyle as well and while on a acre for acre basis it might not make sence it may well allow you to expand and lease elsewhere for forage. I live away from the farm and while it is not drugery it certainly has lifestyle issues.

The other thing to remember is that unless the other two or three locals are really interested then it may go for less than you expect. Also you may not need to sell both outside blocks in reality it is a decision you have to make yourself but if adjacent to you and you in dairying this sort of option may only come up once in your lifetime.

On the onther hand no point in buying at any cost but in reality at present 10k/acre sems to be the base for good quality agriculture land

I've heard of land making 17,500 an acre recently but then again it depends who is interested and how deep their pockets are!!

http://www.thedairysite.com/news/44715/where-will-beef-and-dairy-markets-go-in-2014 Sounds positive enough. Just once them Chinese don't stop buying! And looks like South America will become a bigger player as a low cost supplier of milk!

Biggest threat to low cost milk production is cheap grain and that's where we're heading

It's not that fanciful. If they don't find a home for the cash on hand and the money that they can get their hands on soon they'll become a takeover target themselves.

I'm not dismissing it, all options would be explored I'd hope.

That aside it's time to spin out the whole show

When I was saying that last year I was derided for it. That said there's been a serious uplift in value since.

Was talking to the coop manager here today. Milk price for 2014 came up... Very confident of high milk price remaining till June at least. He's not one to talk things up, so that looks promising.

( he was ringing to tell me I got 50k liters @ 17c... Very happy with that)

Anyone elses Agrilink still acting up? Mine is showing the individual collections/test results from Dec, which add up to a supply of 26000L, however on the superlevy statement page, they have the dec supplied litres as 29000!

I got the form in the post about applying to buy quota for 2014/15, the priority quota is 2cent isnt it? I'll fire down 50kL ha!
