Which was cheaper buy quota or taking the hit on levies?

Of course taking the hit on levies was cheaper, but no one could predict when we'd have one. Buying quota was like buying insurance. Bought over 300k litres here, I know all about it!

Luckily I bought a nice bit of quota at priority category as I was under 35 and under 350 k for a chunk of it.if I didn't buy any I'd be stuck milking about 40/45 cows.levy was 27.5 cent and if I ember correctly all quota I bought averaged at 22 cent

If we didn't get hit with tb the year after we purchased it and 12/13 hadn't been so ****e I would have gotten more out of it, still cash flow wise better to buy, just about at 50c

As in total cost per/litre extra was 50c over a few years for you M out? is that made worse from loosing cows and not filling it all and extra finance from existing quota pool iykwim and not on Mj's priority list type setting?

I'm having to share up, super levy 23k, and 50k written off which I bought!

What about new entrants who got 198000 litres free and other young farmers who got none?

Those who got 200 k free quota can't really complain and as for other young farmers who got none ,they had oops to purchase quota through the exchanges and priority and apply for the 200 k why didn't they do that.some just want everything spoon fed to them .i was a new entrant in 2010.i got no installation aid ,dad missed out on early retirement and now I'm missing out on 60% tams grant .since 10 I've bought quota ,reseeded my farm increased cow nos ,built new parlour added cubicles and storage with no grants or handouts as well as supporting my parents in lieu of getting farm .some new entrants make my blood boil they way they want hand outs in form of grants and levy exemptions etc .

I see some Dairy farmers in the north are protesting about the milk price outside Stormont. A spokesman for the Ulster Farmers Union says that a farmer there milking 100 cows is losing £1000/week.

First of all let me say you don't know me, you don't know who I am. I have never got a grant for anything since I took over. All I was asking for was that the superlevy be returned to those farmers who went over in 2015. Heck the whole country was calling for it gone a few months ago. What's changed maybe you see profit in someone else's misfortune? My single farm payment is 4,635. I took over my father's farm in 2010 which is 40 acres. Our milk quota was 21,000 gallons and we had 20 cows. I got no installation aid like yourself. My father and mother live on the old age pension and I pay for their vhi, electicity, car insurance, telephone as well as trying to support myself. I took over in 2010, first thing I did was I bought an 8 unit secondhand milking parlour and milk tank cost 19,000. 2011 I put in roadways on one side of the farm and put in holding pen and dirty water tank cost 10,000. 2012 I drained 5 acres of bog and put in roadways cost 13,000. 2013 I reseeded 7 acres of the bog and rented another 40 acres beside me on a 5 year lease and I built a 46' x 60' shed for straw loose bedding the cows cost 9,000. 2014 I put in slurry storage and slats for 80 cows cost 31,500 and I reseeded 8 acres and I put in a well. I don't know which coop you are in but I put in for 5000 gallons every time and all I could get was 2000 gallons at a time. I now have 34,000 gallons of quota. So don't be getting on your high horse and kicking a man when he's down. Anyway I'm gone for good this time, all the best.

Aghh jays us it was just a a general comment ,no insult meant .youve obviously come along way(and the hard way) by your post and fair play..when u say u put in for 5 k gallons did u just apply at priority category price??,if so getting 2 k gallons at a time was a decent enough return.bidding on exchange is where I picked up majority of what I got .always got some at priority when I was eligible but amount was always small

    What prompted that outburst?

A recently departed contributor from the south east made a rapid return to deliver a response to a mahoney_j post .

    A bit of a misunderstanding

Would be a good idea to keep output up too incase they decide on a referance deal like 2015/2016

Far better idea to fill the trolley with hundreds of different products and then abandon the trolley in the aisle.
Staff then have to put the contents of maybe 50 trolleys back in their proper shelves :D

When price rises again there won't be a word about it.

Kev, some of the high output high input guys see the solution to be build a shed and load in more cows as the solution.

This is what the guys in NI and UK have been doing when they had no quota. They still see it as the way out of this impending crisis.

The milk companies in the UK are one truck ponies with no added value at all. Hugely reliant on domestic consumer market leaving them wide open to supermarkets doing what they do

I see some of the English dairys are paying 7ppl for what they call B quota.....that's a good way of restricting production
