I wouldn't be too afraid of it, trailer it away for €250 and get the multimeter and power probes out.
A little more info would be nice but I'd take a chance on it

I think you will need more than a multimeter to diagnose that. I was chasing a minor misfire on the 520's M54 and I had to use INPA and k+d can cable to find it, wouldnt even show up in generic OBD's.

Timing chain probably gone on that 1 series. it's an N45 isnt it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭mullingar

Yes, that 116i has older n45 engine with the chocolate chain.

It's also the poverty spec ES model

    All done!

Got all the bits sorted on my 'free' fixerupper E60. In total it needed:

    2 front brake disks
    pads all round
    rocker gasket
    oil filter housing seal
new plugs, filter, microfilters and oil
de-gunked ICV which cured slight misfire on idle
some paint correction and a compiund/polish.
    new bonnet badge
    new foglight trim on bumper.
    balance handbrake
drivers headlight (s/h) and polish/restoration of both.

Total - about 360 euro odd. But its running superbly, engine runs very smooth (no oil leaks now :)) and drives very precisely. Well chuffed I am!!

Just one more, because why not. It really was a nice day today, corona virus be damned.

There is money to be made on this if it could be tested without too much expense.

1 previous owner, looks tidy enough under the dirt. Ad seems genuine enough. €1100

You're right, there's a few quid there if you could get a test date. They are a hateful POS though. Not a patch on the Lupo before it or the Up after it in terms of character. They're a 3rd world country kind of yoke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,086 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Without a doubt, an awful yoke - but some young person looking for their first car will surely hand over €2500 with a fresh test and a valet.

I didn't realise they were sold here new til recently, thought they all came from the UK.

Not many of these left floating about
Could be worth it for the nostalgia alone, or the peeling lacquer, or the damaged panels :D
Looking for €250 and it starts and drives!

Thoughts on this, you’ll be lucky owner number 14

I like these, especially in this colour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Sure you'd break it for parts for more than that i'd say.

Be a really nice car if it was running, you'd have to wonder what could possibly be wrong. It couldn't be that hard to figure out, it just reads like yer man was throwing parts at it and hoping for the best.

Big bastid dent over the fuel filler door.

    I would.

Nice looking A2 out of NCT this month for €300

Same owner for the last five years. Could be worth a punt at that money

147 in an interesting colour for 500 quid

Hah, i actually was out walking last night and that very car drove past me. Remember thinking the colour and the fact that it's an Alfa that's still alive was unusual. Unsurprisingly, no NCT.

    Subaru Outback for €200

You'd want to be capable of doing the work yourself, and even at that it might well be far too gone. Cheap car all the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,729 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

You have to wonder if the tester has ever driven a boxer diesel before or if the big ends are gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,126 ✭✭✭selectamatic

I'd imagine she means it failed on emissions as well as the brakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭26000 Elephants

Emissions might be fine - they just werent tested because of a knocking/rattle noise from the engine. tester probably reckoned it was a flywheel or tensioner about to let go and wouldnt chance it.

Considering the abysmal state she allowed the brakes to get into, I wouldn't put too much faith in her "well, I cant hear anything" comment about the engine!
